well done everyone who avoided all things carby today.

We were at crufts and I took packed lunch for us all, sandwiches for the DC and for DH and I we had sliced ham, cheese, olives, salad, stuffed peppadews and it was lovely. Got a few funny looks (well I thought so) as we were rolling sliced meats and cheese into a sausage shape and eating them with salad.

But we resisted everything - even the ice cream stall with my favourites, mint choc chip and rum n raisin. Had Indian food tonight, very tempted by the nan bread, but only had a corner - think it will be fine as we walked miles today.

I am desperate for some chocolate tonight, someone told me that I could have a little double cream, warmed with a couple of squares of v dark choc melted into cream and then whipped. I could scoff that now.

debs39 · 10/03/2012 22:20

jax no way cld i stop at ' a little' tho ha ha xxxxx
am taking my 5 yr old and my little bubba swimming again tomorrow...this proves a big motivator too as opening times for pool are 2pm onwards so no naughty carb blowouts for lunch or will look like i am still pregnant : ( have got the tummy overhang thing going on though...suppose that is about right tho for being almost 40 and 2 kids into life!!!!! Damn Heidi Klum for being so flipping amazing after is it 5 kids??? Suppose that is why I am stuck working for the local council and not a world supermodel tho ha ha : )
PS am feeling v bored foodwise...as OH works away am finding it hard to find time to cook for just me as after 2 bubs are asleep it is 9pm minimum......

debs39 · 10/03/2012 22:26

ps glitter nothing like a bit of competitive one up man ship!!! Female solidarity and all that...erm not!!!! I know that loads of OH 'friends' wives wld love it if they cld say i looked podgy after just having bubs 2 grrrrrrrrr...after all one of my own friends passed comment 3 wks after i had bubs 2 ( have ranted about this previously!!! ) Women can be cruel ....or is that not just people in general though???? Glad we are all on here rooting for one another : )

lemniscate · 10/03/2012 22:27

ImperialBlether - yes! Anchovies! I knew as I typed that that there was something delicious I had forgotten! Sadly my vinaigrette is a bit variable as I make it up as I go along - usually lemon, olive oil, salt, pepper and a little Dijon mustard but very much by taste and I think could always be better.

lemniscate · 10/03/2012 22:30

Debs - you must have serious willpower to get as far as sticking your head in the cupboard and then retreating!!! I am having to pretend there is no snack cupboard in our house. 17 month old DD has already resorted to breaking in and fetching her own!

debs39 · 10/03/2012 22:39

lemni think i need one of those fridge pigs you used to be able to get!!!

Worst thing about oh working away is that there is no one around to see me be a greedy pig...have been known to do about 4000 cals worth of choc in one go...am a seriiiiiiiious carb addict!!!!! Thank the lord that bfeeding stopping me from vodka splurging at wkends tho as that normally triggered mega naughty carb sessions!!! Am dying to be able to start exercising properly though as think that that keeps my carb cravings at bay loads....as my pelvis separated after had bubs 2 have been unable to do normal stuff and it is driving me nuts!!!!

Iatemyskinnyperson · 10/03/2012 22:55

Hi all. Im on Week2 day 3 of pig to twig and doing well- 6lbs down!

Just wanted to ask a question, did any of you notice your sense of taste is dulled? Things don't seem to have much flavour or something... I put so much chilli in my fake fajitas (fajitas in iceberg lettuce) that DH refused to eat them!!! Even my tea seems just to taste like hot waterSad

BIWI · 11/03/2012 09:47

Basic vinaigrette:

Olive oil and red wine vinegar, in a ration of 5:1 or 3:1 if you prefer it sharper/more vinegary.

Black pepper, touch of salt.

Whisk together and coat your salad leaves.

You can also add mustard or garlic or finely chopped shallots, or herbs, etc

BIWI · 11/03/2012 09:48

Ratio, not ration! Grin

BIWI · 11/03/2012 09:53

I had a 'difficult' dinner party last night. Had to not only be able to accommodate me, but also a friend who has a heart condition and has to lose weight, and has been told in no uncertain terms by her doctor to do really low fat/low calorie. I made:

Roasted tomato and fennel soup
Homemade onion and olive bread, with Brittany butter with sea salt crystals - I didn't have any bread

Roasted cod fillet on a bed of spicy lentils (I did have the lentils)

Lemon posset with vanilla and orange zaletti biscuits - I didn't have any of either

Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries with cream - my dessert

Coffee, with brown sugar meringues drizzled with dark chocolate - I didn't have any meringue

2 glasses of Cava and 2 glasses of white wine.

And one of my guests brought chocolates, and I managed to avoid those too. So all in all not too bad, and the scales showed only a 1/4 lb gain this morning, so hopefully that won't damage things too much.

I hope you are all impressed with my willpower!

AngryFeet · 11/03/2012 11:12

Help please ladies!

I have a large pack of chicken wings in the fridge for mine and the kids dinner. I need some sort of quick marinade that isn't spicy and can't find any recipes. Something BBQ saucy would be good.

Any ideas?

BIWI · 11/03/2012 11:26

Anything BBQ would tend to be sweet though.

How about lemon, olive oil and garlic, with oregano or thyme or any herbs that you might have?

Or a Chinese-y one - garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger?

motherofluvlies · 11/03/2012 14:34

Hi thanks for all suggestions.Took prawn mayo+ salad.Saw Romeo andJuliet at The Royal Opera House.Amazing.

vnmum · 11/03/2012 15:16

with regards to marinades etc, DH HAS A weber bbq recipe book and it has loads of rubs and marinades that we use on our meats. really makes it more interesting.

I saw mentioned somewhere on the thread about someone grinding their own flaxmeal. Are brown linseeds the same as flaxseeds? I picked some up but the nutrition on the packet said 28g carb per 100g but the carb content on my pack of linwoods milled flaxseed is only 1.5g. so will this work out the same when the whole seeds are ground?

also, should I count the carbs for my veg by weighing it cooked or do you all weigh raw and count those carbs then cook?

vnmum · 11/03/2012 15:17

this is the book DH has

TheRealMrsHannigan · 11/03/2012 15:46

Hi I hope everyone's had a lovely day the weather has been amazing!i had a lovely lunch of ham &cheese with a bit of mayo wrapped in iceberg lettuce leaves.
Made chocolate chip cookies with DD and resisted nibbling those. I couldn't resist checking the scales and am showing a 3lb loss!

BIWI · 11/03/2012 16:41

Great progress! And well done on resisting the cookies Grin

QueenStromba · 11/03/2012 17:03

Brown linseeds are the same as flaxseed. I'm guessing you got them in Tesco? For some reason they have fibre included in the carbohydrate total - if you add up the fat, protein, carbs and fibre on the label it comes to more than 100g.

OP posts:
vnmum · 11/03/2012 19:14

queen so would you carry on using the same carb count as the packet of milled flaxseed says, which is 1.5g per 100g? I really can't see how the same thing can vary in carb content, for example an iceburg is an iceburg no matter where it's from so surely it must be the same for linseeds. linseeds are linseeds wether ground or not?

SeriousWispaHabit · 11/03/2012 20:17

Sounds like everyone is doing really well - BIWI, that dinner party sounds lovely.

I have had a tricky weekend at the in-laws with brown foodstuffs aplenty. Offered biscuits on arrival yesterday, sandwiches for lunch, flapjack and malt loaf as snacks and then dinner last night was pizza with french bread (yes, that's bread with bread on the side) and potato salad. I decided that as MIL had not actually prepared anything and just bought pizza that I could get away with nipping to the shop and getting something that I could have. Luckily, she was busy getting her mother back to the nursing home after bringing her over to see the DDs so I did dinner for everyone while she was out and roasted some lamb shoulder steaks and made salad for everyone else to have with their carb fest.

I did deviate from the diet today (planned) as we went to a Chinese buffet for lunch with the ILs and I had a few noodles and spare ribs and a mini spring roll. I then had chicken satay and stir fry veg with sugar free jelly and a tiny bit of ice cream for pud. Given that I could have dived headfirst into the crispy duck and pancakes, fried rice, battered chicken, sweet and sour, banana fritters and syrup I don't think it was too bad. Felt quite bloated and full afterwards although I didn't eat nearly as much as I would have done before I started this.

Not going to weigh until Wednesday and will then add my loss to the big list that I keep meaning to join in on.

lemniscate · 11/03/2012 20:27

Good day here. DH and I had a rare day out as my parents are here so they babysat Grin had to go shopping which we both aren't huge fans of, but we got lots of house bits and bobs and important things like new socks! We had a lovely lunch at Wagamamas. They do a gingery beef salad which seems to be pretty low carb and was very very delicious. Came home to find mum had done a roast chicken, which I had without gravy - I can't believe I didn't mind, but it was fine without! Small portion pf roast Celeriac, swede and butternut, large helping of cabbage. Yum! It's probably my worst day because of the root veg but hopefully not too carby.

I've really noticed how my 2 egg omelette keeps me going - after cereal/porridge I'm desperate for cake by 10am! But with omelettes I don't need a morning snack at all. Upbeat about it all today, but it is only day 4 Smile

GetOrfMoiiLand · 11/03/2012 20:36

BIWI that sounds like a delicious dinner party, well done on not collapsing in the face of posset and meringues.

angry I hope you're OK, it sounds like you're having an awful time of it. Don't feel too guilty about what you are eating on top of all the rest of it.

wispa I have just laughed at what your inlaws have tried to feed you - pizza, french bread and potato salad. It's as if they know you are low carbing and are aiming to sabotage!

I made mississippi mud pie this afternoon - dd has got a GCSE controlled assessment tomorrow and has to make it, so we did a trial run. I helped dd to melt 3 (3!) lindt chocolate bars in a bain marie. I also lovingly crushed 300g of bourbon biscuits and mixed them with butter and helped press into a pie case. I then supervised the making of fudge sauce (with more chocolate, double cream and golden syrup). And I didn't eat any, thieve a spare bourbon or lick my fingers or any bowls. Truly selfless mothering!

I also made a cauliflower crust pizza (found the recipe online). It was great - it didn't taste anything like pizza but was delicious nonetheless.

Back down to 10.11 this morning - if I get down to under 10.10 by this week I will be happy.

I am also stepping up the workouts - I did the Jillian Michaels 6 week 6 pack (did level 1 nd 2 workouts back to back, so 70 mins of exercise. I collapsed at the end of it and needed a lie down in bed with a trash mag!)

CointreauVersial · 11/03/2012 20:57

You are all being so good. I won't even bother posting what I ate today, but let's just say it definitely cannot be described as low-carb. Puddings featured heavily. Great lunch party, though, I cooked for 14, and they finally pushed off about an hour ago.

New week starts tomorrow, so back on the wagon.

CheerfulYank · 11/03/2012 21:06

I haven't been eating much this weekend because my sleeping has been off. I had eggs and diet Pepsi today and am about to have a cup of tea. Will have some tuna later. :)

On Saturday I caught sight of myself undressing in the mirror and my stomach is actually a bit smaller! I'm sure no one can tell but me, but it was nice to actually see a teeny bit of progress. I'm not going to weigh myself til next weekend, so who knows.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 11/03/2012 21:07

That sounds lovely though, cointreau.

Sod it, you have got to let your hair down sometimes. I have fallen off the wagon in spectacular style (for parties) when on this diet, it hasn't done much harm really and I have still lost 20lbs in 10 weeks or so.
