The Golden Rules that will aid you on your journey with our like minded support system:

  1. Eat what you WANT
  2. Eat when you are HUNGRY
  3. Eat CONSCIOUSLY
  4. STOP eating when you are satisfied and full

This weight loss system is about re-educating your body; learning to listen to it and in doing so losing weight and inches. So forget diets; they may work for a while, but they aren't permanent solutions.
The Paul McKenna system works and is easy to maintain.

Hello everyone - I hope it's okay to just barge in here and say hi?

Am hoping I can join you as have just bought the book and CD and really really need to change my eating habits. I'm a big emotional eater, I'm eating loads and loads and getting rather fat in the process. Blush Can't face a deprivation diet though so think this might be the way to do it.

MardyBra · 10/02/2012 14:55

Hello boredandrestless - all welcome here. If you're an emotional eater (me too), this is a great thread for you. There's no deprivation here - I had a lovely cappuccino and a pastry for breakfast this morning. All I had to do was wait until I was hungry, and then eat it slowly and enjoy every mouthful! Sound good to you?

Have you read the book yet?

MardyBra · 10/02/2012 15:06

Bertha - interesting comments about the diet drinks. I'm not sure I follow the logic that "artificial sweetener leaves you fatter than somebody you eats the full sugar version" (but don't want to enter into any mini-rucks about it though Grin).

I drink diet coke because I really do like the taste better than fat coke. I don't like the way the sugar seems to stick to my teeth. It's the only thing I do buy that is full of aspartame - I don't buy crappy WW products or drink other diet drinks. But I genuinely do like the taste of diet coke (and the caffeine hit!).

I'm aware that the aspartame isn't great for me (and I have weaned myself down to one can a day - it used to be 2!). If I'm not drinking that I will have water or soft drinks like sparkling elderflower. Not sure where I can see that I'm going wrong because I'm eating what I want (rule 1).

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/02/2012 15:16

Welcome bored :) This way of eating is so fab, honestly you will love it - and get slimmer!

The thing that strikes me with all these diets and so on, is that you have to become totally obsessed with food. I mean I know this from doing WW myself in the past - you end up thinking about food constantly and living in fear of being hungry when you have no points left to eat that day. As soon as you don't obsess, then the weight comes back on.
Also, everyone sounds so bloody miserable. We moan on here, but generally it is about the other crap that life is throwing at us, rather than the weight loss aspect.

And one last thought (then I shall shut up Grin) is that there seems to be little regard for health. Good foods are rejected on the basis of being too calorific, and people consume no end of rubbish because it is easier to count it - BBB diet drinks and WW bars etc etc are a case in point, utter rubbish and it totally screws your metabolism.

ppeatfruit · 10/02/2012 15:37

Welcome bored Smile .

Yes Ali i have noticed that a LOT of people will change their eating habits to loose weight but not to be healthy (DH included)! The good thing about P.M. is that you can do both with no problems as I have done.

I agree about the non - foods doled out by the Diet foods industry. Sadly it is difficult not to obsess a bit about food in our culture IMO it's 'cos we have SOO much choice though most of it is unnatural. Also our traditional way of eating - the way we've been bought up to eat - is not healthy otherwise there'd be no illness in the world would there? I don't know anyone my age (and some younger and obviously older) who's healthy except me Grin and I have to work at it!!!

MardyBra · 10/02/2012 15:45

"Good foods are rejected on the basis of being too calorific, and people consume no end of rubbish because it is easier to count it"

I so agree with that Ali. One of my favourite foods is avocado. With WW, they are 8 pro points - depending on your size about quarter of the total daily allowance. But they're full of vitamins, good fats, potassium, and anti-oxidants. Yet, it would be tempting to avoid them in favour of other foods which have lower propoints but nowhere near as many nutrients (or flavour for that matter).

Deafworm · 10/02/2012 15:49

Can I sneak in sheepishly? Wow thread 8, glad some of you have more sticking power than I managed, I didn't stop pming just rubbish at posting regularly! How are you all doing? The hungry thread sounds scary I just googled for some idea what 400cals is (have never counted calories before) that's just scary for a full day

My eating has been erratic for a while now as I'm 12 weeks pregnant with dc4 and more nauseous and sick than I've ever been, there were some days where I could only eat one small meal, in fact that 400cals isn't far off, but a week of eating like that lost me 2lb (I weighed out of sheer curiosity) its slowly improved over the last few weeks and I can now manage a bit more so I'm trying to see how far off the pm track I've been knocked. Going to re read and do the 90day journal. For a split second I contemplated slimming world then it occurred it wouldn't do me any more good than a really concerted effort at pm would.

Anyway that's more than enough waffle from me, I'm going to try to make sure I stick around this time, sorry for abandoning you all!

BigBoobiedBertha · 10/02/2012 16:27

Mardybra - the research so far is saying that if you drink a sugar free drink, your brain registers the sweetness and waits for the sugar high that goes with it. When that doesn't happen, the appetite is stimulated and the drinker ends up consuming more calories in other ways to compensate. I really shouldn't be here as I should be packing (DH is about to kill me I think!) but to give you some idea of the theory in the research it refers to Pavlov's dog - ie. your brain expects a certain reward for a certain stimulus even if you don't get it.

If I get the chance and my phone can cope I will post some links to the research. It is very interesting. (Disclaimer - I have a psych degree so I would say that Grin)

MardyBra · 10/02/2012 16:41

OK I get it. Hadn't heard of that before. I still like the taste and the caffeine hit though Grin. Can I get away with the odd can if I promise not to get any other crappy sweetener-loaded food. Pretty please....

boredandrestless · 10/02/2012 17:22

Thanks for the welcome Smile

[Whispers] I like pepsi max. I know sweeteners aren't good, don't like diet coke or diet pepsi, or the full sugar versions. I don't drink it a lot, usually if I'm out but maybe I should go for something a bit better nutrient wise.

I've done WW in the past and it works while I'm doing it but it makes me even more obsessed with food than usual and I try to pack as much food as I can into my points, which doesn't always mean the best, filling, nutritional food. So I'm done with that. I need to totally change my outlook and make it more positive. Smile

I have started reading the book this afternoon and will hopefully get chance to listen to the CD when I've got DS in bed.

How often do you all listen to the CD?
My book has a CD in the back and a dvd in the front, didn't realise the dvd was in there so that's a bonus!

PhoenixFromTheFlames · 10/02/2012 17:26

I heard from a trainer at my gym if you drink sugar free drinks the average person consumed 300 extra calories a day! I agree you expect a sugar hit and go out to here that desire!

MardyBra · 10/02/2012 18:06

OK maybe it's time to wean myself off the Diet coke completely.

bored - I find that unless I listen to the CD regularly then I stray from the rules. At the moment, I'm trying to do it every day, but some do it every other day or less frequently. But I do get bored of it and start rebelling. I like it best when I fall asleep completely. Grin

MardyBra · 10/02/2012 18:07

How about if you drink your diet drink WITH food, would that make a difference? I usually have my DC with lunch.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/02/2012 19:00

Mardy Grin I used to be diet coke addicted, and somehow in the last few months I have just stopped having it, completely. And I hadn't even realised until just now.
Yes what you say about avocado, that is it exactly. The same applies to oily fish, nuts etc.

I definitely feel better and snack less when I eat a decent amount of fat. For example porridge. If you make it with water, then not only is it disgusting but you are hungry again an hour later. If you make it with milk then it keeps you full all morning. The combo of some fat and good, slow-release carbs is brilliant for me.

KinkyDorito · 10/02/2012 19:31

Sigh.

Well.

We were done with diets. But now we have to start a proper one, for very important reasons.

The scans have shown DD has fat in her liver. She isn't overweight, and it could have been caused by chemo drugs, but it's still manageable through diet. She will be having a liver biopsy to get to the bottom of whatever is going on with it, once and for all. But, we've decided to take the plunge and commit as a family to low sugar, lower carb (focusing on healthy carbs, wholewheat and wholegrain) eating to see if this helps her.

It will be tough.

I'm eating the rest of the ferrero rocher before we start though Wink.

I will be doing my PMK still as I know I will binge on anything if it's there, including healthy food.

I'm dusting off my ancient Sarah Brown super healthy vegetarian cookbook.

Bring on the pulses.

LotsOfGoodFunThatIsFunny · 10/02/2012 19:35

Evening all :)

If I have coke I normally go for the diet version just out of habit. I don't mind water as long as it is bottled so will try to stick to that now.

I have found out today that my landlord is selling the house so I will have to move out by the 10th April. God knows how I'm going to afford another deposit!

On a good note I went out last night and even though I drank too much I didn't get anything to eat on the way home or over eat at all today Grin I can weigh in on Monday and am very nervous that I haven't lost anything.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/02/2012 19:48

Oh Kinky :( Are you getting some time with a dietitian to help you with meal plans etc?
People speak highly of the Hugh F-W veg cookery book, might be worth a look?

Lots - nightmare re. the house. Is there plenty to rent where you are or are you in for a search?

KinkyDorito · 10/02/2012 20:27

We have Mr F-W already, so it will be an excuse to have a look. She has a cancer dietician, so I'm sure she'll be in touch when they've confirmed it. It's not a bad thing tbh, we could all do with eating well and stopping using food as treats. It will be a culture shock, that's all. If it makes madam well, then it is totally worth it. I'm just hoping that's as bad as it gets and nothing else comes up when they do the biopsy.

LotsOfGoodFunThatIsFunny · 10/02/2012 20:34

Kinky thinking of you and your DD.

Ali I have had a quick look on the right move website and they are showing a few houses in the area I live that are within my price range. I don't want to move too far as it wouldn't be fair to change DD1s school again (she is on 3rd school). I should find somewhere in that time but I hate moving! :(

SoloSewsSeedsOfLoveInPatchwork · 11/02/2012 01:30

Hi all. Welcome bored and welcome back dw.

kinky sorry you have even more troubles :( I hope things improve quickly and that all results are as good as they can be whilst they are bad iyswim?

I used to drink diet coke too and can't abide the full fat coke or any kind of pepsi and yuk, yuk, yuk to pepsie max or coke zero...in fact I don't even like dc anymore, but will drink it if there's nothing else. I did crave it when pg with Dd though ~ big shock that that was a craving!

Need to knuckle down on this

Busy week coming up, so if I'm not about, I will return!

Hi to everyone else :)

Ps. PMK can be dirt poor, I'd still have him for him to make me slim.

ppeatfruit · 11/02/2012 07:44

DEAFWORM!!!!!!! it's good to hear from you i'm glad you're still P.Ming!! Congrats on N0. 4 Smile. Morning all Smile.

Ref. brown fizzy sugar water drinks!!Smile I ban coke in our house except for b\day parties when we buy the non pepsi copies (I refuse to add to the vast coffers of already bloated capitalists who make money out of ill health and bad teeth!!!) I still haven't forgiven them for wanting to add a 3rd tap to our hot and cold ones at the sink!!!!Shock Sorry for the rant Smile.

ppeatfruit · 11/02/2012 07:46

Solo he IS making you slim !!!!

boredandrestless · 11/02/2012 09:01

They wanted to add a fizzy drink tap??? Shock

Lotsof - It's always worth asking about deposits, I'm currently in my second rental and haven't yet had to pay a deposit. Have been upfront about it, paid admin fee and provided good character references. They might say no but it's always worth asking, at the end of the day they want someone who is going to be a good long term tenant.

Kinky - sounds like you have a lot going on, hope everything works out well. Like you say a new diet will benefit all of you really.

LotsOfGoodFunThatIsFunny · 11/02/2012 09:24

boredandrestless I am hoping to stay with the same letting agency but the chances of something becoming available is quite slim. They have said they would like to keep me as a tenant so should give me a good reference if needed. If I only had £200,000 or so!

I don't drink nearly as much coke as I used to and the DC aren't allowed it at all but they do have fruit shoots some times if we go out for a meal or at the grandparents Blush

SoloSewsSeedsOfLoveInPatchwork · 11/02/2012 10:19

Morning!

I don't let my Dc's have fizzy unless we are at a party and then it's lemonade and not a lot of it either...it is though, increasingly difficult to enforce this with Ds as he is now 13.6. Fruit shoots are also banned, but I'm also against aspartame. I just found this and it makes for frightening and eye opening reading.
