My dh isn't professionally trained at all but used to body build and is a bit of a geek about anything he does so knows a lot about nutrition/diet/maintaining body weight and he agrees with starvation mode bettybathroom but I don't really know. How else would you explain someone like piratecat who is eating only 1200 calories a day but not losing? I can't imagine anyone who isn't burning more than that in a day? Genuinely interested in your thoughts as I always assumed it would be starvation mode, not meant to be rude!

It was suggested to me to try a size 12 as I was complaining I had only gone down one dress size, the jeans I ordered came today and not only could I get them on but I did them up easily!!! Yay!!!!!

piratecat · 14/04/2012 15:55

hello all, i have low fat yog, i have almonds, and other goodies. went to Sainsbo's and it's 20 miles away! No i didn't walk it.

Really nice to have you ladies to talk to.

I am 11st 1, i want to be 10 stone. Ideally i should prob be 9, but i don't think i have been that since was a teen!

Will read again what you have said.

piratecat · 14/04/2012 16:00

also what is the consensus on buying lower fat things.

when you look at the ingredients, they have more sugar in them than the normal, to add taste apparently.

which is better?!

BettyBathroom · 14/04/2012 20:18

Cinnamon I am in no way a dieting expert Smile, I just got curious a while back after reading the mfp forums opinion on stalling, somehow it just didn't ring true - it sounded like they were suggesting the human body could defy the laws of physics, so I googled and I couldn't find any facts based on scientific studies - all I found was the suggestion that the way most people thought about starvation mode was wrong and that it only occurred in underweight but maybe I didn't look hard enough, has your dh got any links to scientific studies on starvation mode - would be interesting.

Imo if pirate has been sticking to her diet and weighing and recording properly then she is retaining water either TOM, ovulating, dehydation, fat cells retaining water??!!! The last one sounds mad - apparently it happens...

Low fat foods - I'd drop the ones that replace the lost fat with sugar....I have managed to take control of my sweet cravings through moderate low carbing and that's something I'd like to hold on to...and some low fat alternatives taste awful, food should taste good otherwise don't eat it, it's waste of calories!!!

piratecat · 14/04/2012 20:52

oh i am quite sure my bloody fat cells would retain anything they could munch.

dehydration sounds about right, i don't drink enough.

what is TOM?

piratecat · 14/04/2012 20:54

i got some low fat red pepper houmous, but tbh i might just buy the normal then, i only have scraping on my ryvitas.

BettyBathroom · 14/04/2012 20:58

TOM is Time Of the Month...does seem a bit mad though that fat cells would fill with water to retain their shape and the annoying thing is that they are able to do this for up to six months but mostly they do it for much less - but it could be all rubbish. Hmm I might google..

cinnamongreyhound · 14/04/2012 21:10

I personally don't eat low fat foods, they don't taste nice as nice and often are not that much lower in fat. I'd rather eat a smaller amount of the real thing. I will ask dh about facts!

piratecat · 14/04/2012 21:12

well its 3 weeks, and have just ovulated so pretty much covers all rises and falls with the old cycle.

we will crack this! Wink I agree low fat stuff is ming.

BettyBathroom · 14/04/2012 21:28

Sorry forgot to say Cinnamon well done on getting into the size 12's - isn't that just the best feeling! How must smaller do you want to get?

BehindLockNumberNine · 14/04/2012 21:33

Size 12 cinnamon... how fantastic!! I would be happy with going down to a size 18... (am 6ft1 tall so it is not as bad as it sounds Smile)

BehindLockNumberNine · 14/04/2012 21:34

Actually, I did not think about the lower fat version being full of sugar... Fair point, will stick to the 'proper' version of my Greek yoghurt (which tastes soooo flipping nice!!!)

MonsterBookOfTysons · 14/04/2012 21:47

Congrats cinnamon on going down to size 12, it is a great feeling isnt it :)

BettyBathroom · 14/04/2012 21:58

BLNN Low fat options aren't always full of sugar - Total 0% is just yoghrt, nothing else, and skimmed milk has the same amount of carbs as full fat. It's worth having a read of the ingredients - but I agree with cinnamon better to have a little bit of what you fancy than a plateful of cardboard.

piratecat · 14/04/2012 21:59

behindlocknumbernine,

i want your yog not mine now!

piratecat · 14/04/2012 22:02

i saw that total yog today, it was really pricey compared to the own branded ow fat yog. might invest another day.

what is everyone putting in their yogs, or are you using it in really interesting ways?!

cinnamongreyhound · 14/04/2012 22:13

Not really sure BettyBathroom, I had initially set myself the target of getting to a normal BMI which is another 4Kg but seemed so far away when I started 23Kg ago! I am happy with what I'm eating so will be content to carry on for a while longer and I still feel I have more fat than I'd like on my tummy, legs and arms so we'll see. I am 165cm/5'5" so getting to normal bmi is 68Kg/10st 10 so to lose another stone wouldn't be ridiculous. It seemed such a massive target as I've been overweight all my adult life and I have almost made it, haven't been a size 12 since I was 18!

BehindLockNumberNine · 14/04/2012 22:17

Is the total 0% yoghurt Greek style? Or normal yoghurt?

BehindLockNumberNine · 14/04/2012 22:22

Betty you are right, have just googled Total yoghurt and compared the standard greek yogurt (3.8g sugar) with the 0% version of the greek yogurt (4g sugar) and there is not much difference. But the calories are vastly different.... Wonder how they do that?

Expensive though... but will bear it in mind for an occasional treat and stock up when it is on offer...

BettyBathroom · 14/04/2012 22:44

The total 0% is Greek and it's amazing, worth the extra pennies - I almost don't believe it's low fat nevermind zero fat...it's amazing - did I say that already? I have mine with berries, oatbran and ground flaxseed...used to have stevia too but now I have a very small drizzle of maple syrup and I discovered that you don't need much as long as you don't mix it in, just a tiny bit on the edge of the spoon gives the intense sugary taste as it hits the back of your tongue and your mouth is fooled into believing the whole dish is sugary. And if I'm hungry I'll have it as a snack with berries and because it's high in protein it really holds off the hunger pangs. Use it in a courgette BBQ dish, as tangy edge to a salad and instead of soured cream with a chilli.

BehindLockNumberNine · 14/04/2012 23:33

Oooh, ground flaxseed? What is that and what does it do? [dim emoticon]

BettyBathroom · 14/04/2012 23:39

Flaxseed is a veggie source of Omega 3 but the body struggles to digest it unless it's ground. It also contains lots of other nutrients but it's the omega 3 I'm after.

RGPargy · 15/04/2012 00:19

Betty - oooh i know all about injuries!! I have a dodgy knee so have to watch what i do, cardio wise. I've heard that body attack is good but i tried it once and it niggled my knee quite a bit so i haven't done that since (plus it's very "aerobic class" and that just isn't for me!). I shouldn't really do too much step because that aggrevates my knee too but i do love it and just leave out anything that i just know will twinge it if i try it, i.e. anything too twisty/turny. Combat is good because it's not too twisty so i can manage that without too much impact on my knee.

I really dont want to consult a PT because (a) they cost money and i cant afford it (plus i pay enough for gym membership as it is!) and (b) 99% of them will steer me towards static weight machines and the x-trainer/treadmill. Personally i can think of nothing more dull than that so i tend to just stick to my classes. As much as i hate it, i am thinking of hitting some spin classes as i want to get my bike out again soon and i need to be relatively bike-fit again before i venture out on it again.

However, my DP goes to a massage therapist who is also a nutritionist and i think i will make an appointment with her for a chat to find out what can work for me. I know proper low carbing works for me (low carb/no calorie counting/high natural fat & protein) but what's stopping me going back to that is the fact that it is soooo hard to keep up. 99% of the time it's just not practical.

Anyway, waffling again. Am off to bed now as i am attempting a triple class session tomorrow. Not sure if i'll do it - it depends which of my friends is around for coffee in the gym cafe haha!! :o

N'night all!

BehindLockNumberNine · 15/04/2012 10:25

Woohoo, have lost 2.8kg!!! (Am Dutch and used to kg so that is what I am working with...)
Am sure most of that is water but I don't care - it is a real boost and confidence giver, woohoo!!!

piratecat · 15/04/2012 11:14

oh well done you!!! brilliant. you are doing something right.

i got on the scales and have put on a bloody pound, but i am feeling really bloated, and been a bit poorly last couple days.

going to supermarket today to stock up on veggies, and get stuff for a big italian ribollita soup.
