Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

Sparky
Give them HELL !
I lived for many weeks with no heating when we had building work and it is NOT funny.
The best thing I can suggest is for you and your little one to do housework. Not joking. Vacuuming, scrubbing - boil water in a kettle and use mixing bowls - dusting. Anything to get you up and about and your muscles working. You'll burn off quadruple calories in the cold and will have had a productive day.
Is there anybody who could bring older kids home so that there is NO chance of missing the gas man?

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 15:38

Bloody hell!!!!!!
Just got back (got a taxi so I was back 1/2 hour early!) and they came at 3.15 and left me a note! What part of I HAVE A SCHOOL RUN do they not understand! Angry Angry !

Angry
TalkinPeace2 · 02/02/2012 15:42

FOCUS that anger
aim it squarely at them
demand to speak to a manager
ask them if they would like it done to them
full on assertiveness - scare the bejeesus out of them :-)

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 15:47

Thanks TP I aint called SparkySparrow for nothing! Grin

I am currently on hold! :(

mrspepperpotty · 02/02/2012 16:19

Go Sparky!

nannipigg · 02/02/2012 16:28

I must loose some weight this year, hopefully now that I have a dietitian to help with my food allergies I can concentrate on eating better!

Fairenuff · 02/02/2012 16:31

I do sympathise Sparky we had a similar experience a couple of years ago and the memories still haunt me Grin. They kept sending different engineers who 'fixed' the boiler, only for it to break again within hours. I told the last one they sent that he couldn't leave until it was fixed. He worked into the evening and I fell asleep on the sofa. I woke at 2am and he was still there!!

Do you have a gas oven, you can use like a gas fire. Just light it and leave the door open?

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 16:44

They will be here before six and I got a apology!

Have the oven on for tea so going to leave it on for a little bit longer with the door open after. Luckily its electric!

Fairenuff Its my gas thats off so I am very very thankful that we decided on a electric oven! :) 2am!! Did he fix it properly in the end?

TalkinPeace2 · 02/02/2012 17:14

nanni
welcome to the thread
if you have allergies, the food diary and increasing exercise points will be the main ones for you.
also, get your dietitian to check out the 'dirt' theory for your case as it may help.

nannipigg · 02/02/2012 17:34

TalkinPeace2 Thanks x I am starting a low Salicylate diet for the next 4 weeks to see if that helps, so fingers crossed!
I have a total disinterest in food an just shove anything in that's quick and I'm not allergic to, I used to love to cook but since the Allergies started I find it a chore....

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 17:36

Wecome nanni Do you mind me asking what a low Salicylate diet is? Iv'e never heard of it before.

nannipigg · 02/02/2012 17:44

No not at all....I'm still a little vague, but I have a tiny!! book for guidance, It's all to do with Aspirin. I looked on wiki and it's a natural substance which plants use as a defence against disease and pests etc, but it is also present in soil too.
So lots of fruit and veg are no no's, anything pretty much dried as it concentrates the salicylate. I think it's going to be hard staying off tea though for 4 weeks.....hopefully if I get on okay they add items to the list I can eat Smile

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 17:54

Blimey, not eating dried stuff rule's out a lot surprisingly. It sounds very limited, I hope you get on ok! :)

Gas man's here!! yay!

Hathall · 02/02/2012 19:25

Yay for the gas man!

Hello Nanni. Your diet sounds its a pain. Hope you find some veg and fruit you can eat! What on earth can you eat?? Almost everything I eat apart from Chicken and fish is either dried or fruit or veg.

Good day today. I stuck to my cals and did the level 2 of the shred. Killer!

SparkySparrow · 02/02/2012 20:06

Well done Hathall.
Is level 2 really that bad? I'm a bit scared, I'm getting abit bored on L1.

My heating is on! Apparently the pipes were froze Hmm . I'm going to have a soup and salad day tomorrow to try and counteract the McDonalds I accidently ate today! Grin
Although I haven't eaten anything else all day, too stuffed!

Hathall · 02/02/2012 20:14

Well lets just say that I sweated loads on level 2 and I could not cope with the strength level of circuit 3. My arms are too wimpy.
Glad to hear you're back in the warmth!

Vicky08 · 02/02/2012 21:37

Yay Sparky great news about your heating and I wouldn't worry too much about the Mc Donalds, it's only one meal.

Welcome Nanni I hope you get your diet sorted so you have a better variety of foods to choose from

I've been good today and I'm determined to keep it up over the weekend, it's my birthday next week and if I want some cake I'll have to be good beforehand.

Still have a bad cough so not exercising but looking forward to getting back into it.

Well just one more day of work and it's the weekend!! :)

Fairenuff · 02/02/2012 22:24

Glad your heating's back Sparky. Mine did get fixed eventually Grin.

I seem to have caught the cold that I had so smugly avoided when the rest of the family went down with it, so I'm full of sniffles here. Luckily only one more work day to get through tomorrow then I can rest over the weekend. Supposed to be playing badminton tomorrow but will see how I feel.

Just thought I would share another little tip. I know it sounds silly but at the beginning of each day I tell myself it's an 'Opportunity to Lose' day. Try it tomorrow morning, positive mental attitude and all that Wink.

fazsaeed · 02/02/2012 23:07

Helloo everyone
Well I should say I had a bad day out ( which I did) but I still didn't eat half the food i would of ate before I started eating right. It was a nice change and I think I deserved it for being good :)
Back on the wagon for tomorrow. Party Friday and Saturday. Not too bad when your at home and there's healthy alternatives!
No cake though
Hope everyone had a good day

putyourhatonsweetie · 02/02/2012 23:40

Welcome nanni good news on the heating sparky, must have been miserable.

sounds like everyone is doing well again the last few days.

been a long week here so looking forward to the first fit weekend of february. my sister is looking after my dc on saturday and overnight - last breastfeed for ds tonight Grin so hoping to have a nice time with exercise and sleep and recharging the batteries a bit. then we are swimming with the children all day sunday. should be enough of us to make sure that we each get a proper swim rather than just bobbing up and down in the water holiding the dc. walks in the woods sound lovely, especially if it is really cold, grass is always greener I guess!

TalkinPeace2 · 03/02/2012 13:43

lost a pound since Tuesday.
but am going out for dinner tonight
but did mile swim and 2 classes this morning
It'll even out.
So long as I don't drink too much !

Do if at all possible get out in the sunshine. The vitamin D is important and the fresh air is SO good for you.

Hathall · 03/02/2012 14:16

Well done TalkinPeace on the loss
Well doneFazsaeed on not overdoing it. Good luck with the socials!

Swimming sounds lovely Putyourhaton. Swimming is one of the reasons I want to lose weight. I'm too embarassed to get into swimming attire at my weight. I know you don't need to be slim etc but I have awful lumpy thighs!

So far so good today. Similar to yesterday foodwise.

TalkinPeace2 · 03/02/2012 17:01

hathall
Don't be. Swimming is one of the best ways to take weight off your joints and skin so that as you lose weight you get healthier quicker.
One of my swimming buddies has lost around 8 stone since she started last march and has another 4 to go. She is about 5 foot 1. Walk tall, walk proud and people will not judge you and once you are in up to your neck, who gives a .....
We are a bit mean, as we outdoor pool mob call the aqua class the whales - BUT they work really hard and many of them are really getting there on weight loss and exercise far harder than they could do on dry land.

putyourhatonsweetie · 03/02/2012 20:22

ooooh ooooh guess what...the scales didn't move last week and I'm weighing in early as I'm away tonight...and I've lost 1.5 kg since last week! bringing total loss to 6kg.

Exceedingly grateful to you lot as ordinarily the crap week would have sent me to the biscuit tin/ garlic bread and guilt.

Hathall swimming costume fear? bugger it. go for it, its such a pleasure to be in the water. When I was in the UK my local council pool did a ladies only session a couple of times a week and usually the ladies there were of all shapes and sizes...is this an option for you to build your confidence up? (Though I think you should just do it anyway!)

CupOfBrownJoy · 03/02/2012 20:45

Well done on the losses and all the exercise! I can't seem to get it together to do any exercise at the moment...

I feel like I'm mentally taking my foot off the gas the last couple of days. I've started to snack a little bit without thinking, whereas when I'm really in the zone I don't let even the tiniest unhealthy morsel pass my lips.

Its only been the odd thing, but I don't want it to snowball - I'm going to promise myself to be strict, strict, strict this weekend...
