Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 12:27

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

I have nice eyes and good skin.

I was my targer weight when I got married 6 years ago. I had an almost flat tummy, I didn't have a double chin like now and I had a smaller bum.

I'm worried about my tummy because after 2 C sections It hangs over quite a lot and I'm worried that even after loosing the weight it'll still look bad.

TalkinPeace how much did you weigh at your heaviest? and now?

mrspepperpotty · 22/01/2012 21:07

Hello knittingmamma and well done putyourhatonsweetie!

I like my hair too. It's long and thick and brown. I also like my legs :)

I was last at my target weight in 2003. Would love to have my stomach back! After 3 kids it's never gonna happen

mrspepperpotty · 22/01/2012 21:12

NewYearsRevolution the kids' tea is a real downfall for me too. The trouble is that if I have been good all day I am really hungry by then. Your idea of cooking extra veg for you to eat alongside them is a really good one - I'll try that this week.

NewYearsRevolution · 22/01/2012 21:21

MrsPepperPotty - let me know if it helps!

SparkySparrow · 22/01/2012 21:26

I was 10st (my target weight) before ds(4). I look back on picture's now and see that I actually had quite a flat stomach and toned thighs (Who knew!). Didn't think it at the time.

I have been looking (not to intensely) in the mirror and have decided that I have
quite a pretty face. (Deleted a bit of negativity here! Getting the hang of it! Grin )

I think I might nick the idea of having extra veg at ds's teatime as well!

TalkinPeace2 · 22/01/2012 21:46

Vicky
12:8 top
9:0 target - max was pre children (offices !!!) currently 9:7

lisad123 · 22/01/2012 22:44

I won't admit to current weight but I want to be back to 10 stones! I too worry about the c section over hang Sad
As for picking at kids dinner, I'm lucky we eat with the kids every night and they eat mostly the same as us.
I have prepared a sw curry for tomorrows dinner, hope it tastes nice Grin

Fairenuff · 22/01/2012 23:03

Two c-sections here as well but working on the plank to try and tone up core. I was last a good weight about 10 years ago. Then I stopped smoking and started eating and drinking instead.

I got to a comfortable weight 3 years ago through WW. Lost 2 and half stone but it's all crept back on and more. This time I know exactly what the pitfalls are and how to try and avoid them. Just got to keep the motivation going, which is where this thread helps enormously Smile.

putyourhatonsweetie · 23/01/2012 02:27

Hello all

yes hathall I can see a small difference, but the real noticeable difference is how I feel (in control!). Before I made the decision to get a grip I was eating way too much and feeling guilty about it, (so not even enjoying it) I have now officially got a grip and that feels goo.

I am working in kg as its less emotional for me I have spent too many years following the same patterns of behaviour so am trying to tweak a couple of things. I was 70.7 kg at the beginning of this project, not quite my heaviest (but too bloody close) I am currently 66.2 and aiming for 50 (am short).

What do I like ...? I have good boobs, am a nice hourglass (really looking forward to be slim hour glass as opposed to full figure) and strong eyes and smile.

keep it up all, we're doing brilliantly

mrspepperpotty · 23/01/2012 07:42

I had VBs not CSs, but I have a tummy overhang too - I thought that was from the pregnancies (I put on a LOT of weight each time I was pg) rather than the births? Am planning to lose the weight first and then tone my tummy. We can swap tips for that in a few months!

Fairenuff · 23/01/2012 08:20

mrspepperpotty I think it's best to 'tone as you go' but the plank is quite hard (I can only do it for about 5 seconds at a time, so I do repeats). Pilates is really good for toning the core. Does anyone know other tummy toning exercises which are doable for an overweight middle aged woman which beautiful feet? I cannot do sit ups for the life of me!

mrspepperpotty · 23/01/2012 08:41

That's quite a specific request Fairenuff!! I have never tried pilates but would love to give it a go. As ever it's finding the time. My youngest starts playgroup at Easter for 2 or 3 mornings a week - might try and find a class then.

putyourhatonsweetie · 23/01/2012 09:57

mrspepperpotty fairenuff tummy overhang here too...my abs separated with dc2, he was 9lb 12 and i should have a small frame. rather hoping that the shred is helping my core but have a nagging worry that even when I'm skinny I will have a flabby tummy as the skin is all stretched.

when i get round to it will do some research and pass on anything I pick up.

mrspepperpotty · 23/01/2012 12:44

I am not at my heaviest at the moment. In 2010 I lost nearly two and a half stone, then in 2011 I did a reasonable job of maintaining the weight loss until the last few months when I put about half a stone back on. Now I am hoping to take that off, and then lose another stone and a half on top of that.

putyourhaton I have the same worry about my flabby tummy. My aim is to lose the weight, and tone as best I can. I do think my stomach will never be the same again!

TalkinPeace2 · 23/01/2012 12:57

toning - yoga, pilates and this page has some stuff you can do at home
www.netfit.co.uk/training/articles/abdominal-exercises2.htm
a REALLY easy one is to replace your chair with a swiss ball : you have to constantly work your abs just to sit still while posting on mumsnet
also, do not sit back in your chair - slide forwards in your seat and sit up tall while you type, read, eat etc and think about pulling your tummy button straight back half an inch and holding it here as you breathe
a little bit each day and you will get strong surprisingly fast

flabby skin - moisturise and exercise : it shrinks surprisingly well so long as you lose the weight in a controlled way...

lisad123 · 23/01/2012 14:19

Can anyone tell me why I'm only losing 2lb a week when eating well and only "free food" on slimming world, and working out 3 times a week.

NewYearsRevolution · 23/01/2012 14:26

What do you mean Lisad? didn't you lose 5 lbs the first week? It won't carry on at that rate unfortunately. 1-2 lbs a week is generally considered a healthy rate. Anything more on a long term basis and your body will think it's in starvation mode.

SparkySparrow · 23/01/2012 16:05

2lbs a week is great lisad ! Its brilliant that you lost 5lb's in the first week but 1-2 lbs a week is more healthy and realistic. Its just about keeping your motivation up and aiming for your goal weight!

TalkinPeace2 · 23/01/2012 16:15

2 pounds a week gives your skin, stomach, muscles and everything else time to adapt PERMANENTLY to the new smaller you
so that in six months time you'll look at what you used to eat and wonder how you managed it

Fairenuff · 23/01/2012 16:17

Lisa if you are doing everything by the book, (and not guessing or cheating), keep at it and the weight will come off eventually. 2lbs a week is a good steady rate anyway.

I only lost 1lb this week and I have done nothing different to the previous week when I lost 5lb. Bodies fluctuate, water retention varies week to week depending on your cycle, etc but it all evens out in the end. My chart is still showing a downward trend so I'm happy with that Grin.

SparkySparrow · 23/01/2012 16:55

Ok, so I'm not a happy bunny :( .
Decided stupidly to weigh myself today as I thought if I changed my WI to a Monday it would help me stay on track over the weekend.
I have gained 1b :( .
I'm so disappointed. Apart from the takeaway on sat and a few sandwich's over the weekend I've been bloody good this week. No chocolate/sweets/shit etc! And I have been exercising!!!!! GRRRRRRR!!!! Angry

TalkinPeace2 · 23/01/2012 16:57

"gained a pound"
had you had a wee beforehand, or a drink of water : a pint of water weighs a pound
DO NOT weigh yourself every day
ALWAYS weigh yourself at the same time of day
and think of the 1lb as a percentage and what the margin of error is on the scales
or to put it another wad. Don't worry. Next week will be better.

SparkySparrow · 23/01/2012 17:10

No wee and abit of water. Hmm I had no idea that a pint of water weigh's a pound - you learn something everyday! Grin
I only weigh myself once a week, at the same time of day (did change the day this week.). I put my scale's in a really awkward place so its loads of hassle to get them out so I can't cheat!
Next week I am damn well going to have a wee beforehand!!! Grin

lisad123 · 23/01/2012 17:55

Thanks ladies, I don't really understand it all, I can take off 2lb going to te loo!
Never been on a diet before and not quite sure what normal weight loss is Blush
I only lost 1/2 lb more than friend who cheated this week and didn't wrk out Hmm!
Hopefully this will be a another good week Smile

NewYearsRevolution · 23/01/2012 18:10

The thing with weight loss is, for reasons I don't fully understand, it's not just a straight relationship : have a good week, lose lots of weight. Some weeks you cheat and still lose, others you are good and don't.

I think they key thing is to draw yourself a graph of some sort. Then you can look back when you've done, say, two months and see a nice downward line, even if it wobbles a bit.
