Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

We were told to use the 10-1 rule on things that tempt us. Count back from ten before deciding if it's worth it.
Any chocolate in the house is in the freezer , so have to wait for it.

Hathall · 20/01/2012 22:10

Good tip Lisa

Also have a glass of water before deciding to eat something you know you shouldn't.

putyourhatonsweetie · 21/01/2012 09:31

Welcome knittingmama, you should be really proud of the start you have made. well done you. Also well done to cup. I am not very good at resisting the scales, but I only write it down on weigh in day. and have promised to only get the tape measure out once a fortnight.

I have quite a bit of will power this time around, as someone said up thread, let this be the last diet thread I am ever on. one trick I am using when tempted by something really lovely is mentally fast forwarding a few hours - will I remember how good the chocolate cake tasted? of course the chances are the answer is no. I can then reason with myself to step away. I have also previously been a shocker for habit eating and doing things like finishing off the children's leftovers - so again, reprogramming myself to to stop and think - are these calories worth it?! perhaps instead of this manky bit of sandwich I could have something delicious...

Fairenuff · 21/01/2012 11:24

Hello Knitting good plan re healthy eating, especially when breastfeeding. Is 1500 enough calories though? I know absolutely nothing about this but doesn't sound a lot to me Confused Grin.

Cup Grin well done on the extra pound! I too have weighed mid week and have lost nothing at all yet!. But sticking at it as I'm so determined to lose something by Monday.

Now remember, no cheating just because it's the weekend.

Hi everyone,

Hope you're all having a good weekend. Today I had scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast, I went out for lunch and had a chicken and veg stirfry, no starter, no dessert. I didn't even steal any of my DH's lovely looking chips.

After I had a look around the shops and realised that this is another great motivator for sticking to the diet. I saw so many lovely clothes that I thought I in a few months I'm going to be wearing that, things that I couldn't get away with now.

Another great tip, if you feel like snacking, wash your kitchen floor, you're kept busy for a while, you can't go in the kitchen for a while and you have a lovely clean kitchen floor.

Earlier I had an apple and 2 mandarin oranges and that's me for the day. Now I'm beginning to get that empty feeling in my stomach and instead of thinking I'm hungry and want to eat, tonight I'm thinking, I'm loosing weight and going to get lots of lovely clothes for the summer.

Weigh in day should be tomorrow but beacause I had to do it last Monday instead of sunday, i'm now going to do it every Monday.

putyourhatonsweetie · 21/01/2012 21:13

woop woop weigh in today, 1.2 kg down this week. bringing it to a total of 4.5kg lost!

Vicky08 · 21/01/2012 21:16

Well done putyourhatonsweetie, that's fantastic.

TalkinPeace2 · 21/01/2012 21:50

Well done everybodypeeps!

Vicky08 · 22/01/2012 13:30

Hi everyone hope you're all having a good Sunday. Just had lunch (grilled chicken and veg) and when I get DS down for his nap I'm off to the park with DD, hoping to burn off a few calories especially as tomo is my weigh in day and I've been a bit naughty this week Blush.

Hope you all have a good day.

Hathall · 22/01/2012 13:41

Well done putyourhaton! Thats a fantastic loss overall. Can you feel and see the difference?

I went for a run yesterday but didn't get time today. I'll try to get some exercise in before the day is out. I had grapes, apple, 1 slice marmite on toast for breakfast and couscous and chickpea salad for lunch. Snack is a yoghurt and apple and dinner is grilled chicken and steamed veg.

CupOfBrownJoy · 22/01/2012 14:46

well done putyourhaton!

I fell off the wagon spectacularly last night as we were at a party. I promised myself a couple of glasses of wine and went a bit overboard.... Blush

Back on it today though - although I'm having pasta in a bit to try to soak up some of the alcohol. I'm going to have to try really hard now to see a loss on Wednesday.

SparkySparrow · 22/01/2012 15:01

Hi everyone. Ds has been ill so haven't been able to catch up for a few day's.
It looks like everyone is doing so well! :)
Not been to bad this weekend but have a few slip up's, main one being a takeaway last night Blush . But I'm back on it today and have been shopping to stock up on the good stuff!
Weigh in tues! Eeek! Confused

Hathall · 22/01/2012 15:28

Hope your ds is better soon sparkysparrow. Its very difficult to stay organised and prioritise dieting when the kids are unwell.

Dont worry Cupofbrownjoy I'm sure you'll make it up. We all need to let our hair down and have a good time occasionally!

I have started shredding today. I've just done day 1 and founf it very tough. I'm willing to persevere for the inch loss though.

SparkySparrow · 22/01/2012 16:15

Thanks Hathall He's perked up a bit today - stupid virus's! One thing after another at the moment!
Good luck with the shredding! Its tough but you do start to feel a difference very quickly. Iv'e only done 4 days over 7 but I can already feel a difference (if thats possible) .

Fairenuff · 22/01/2012 16:58

Well done on the weight loss sweetie that's really good going. Also well done to all those that had a little slip and got straight back on it. That's really hard to do, I know.

Who's up for a little discussion? I was thinking about how common it is to think that all our problems will be solved with weight loss. But obviously, they won't, we will just feel better about ourselves, more confident and in control. So, as well as losing weight, getting fitter and changing to more healthy lifestyles, I thought we could have a go at boosting self-esteem.

Can you say something that you like about the way you look, without putting yourself down? I'll start, I have a pretty face but a rather large arse. (Did not mean to add that last bit but couldn't resist it dammit Grin).

Have a go, I dare ya Smile

SparkySparrow · 22/01/2012 17:06

I like my hair - its naturally blonde, long and thick! :)
Ummm.......

SparkySparrow · 22/01/2012 17:14

Seriously...thats it!
I have just stopped to think... and thats it! That is the only thing I REALLY like about my looks at the moment!
Everything else I can find flaw with. :(

Hathall · 22/01/2012 17:15

Fairenuff thats a lovely idea. I think I have a pretty face too beneath the fat. I have nice hair too. Its thinned out a bit after kids but I used to have complete strangers commenting on my hair.

NewYearsRevolution · 22/01/2012 17:28

Ok, I'll give it a shot. I have nice eyes and a nice mouth.

lisad123 · 22/01/2012 17:39

I have clear skin and nice green eyes.

TalkinPeace2 · 22/01/2012 18:53

i have a big wide stripe of white hair
but skin such that I do not have to wear makeup
healthy weights are GOOD

Fairenuff · 22/01/2012 19:43

What a gorgeous bunch we are Smile.

I have beautiful feet Grin. It's true, I always paint my toenails in summer to draw attention to them and away from my thighs. Gah! I did it again. Must try harder!

NewYearsRevolution · 22/01/2012 20:30

Right, here's another exercise because feeling a bit fed up tonight.

For those of us who have been our target weight during adulthood, which bits of you look good at that weight that you don't like at the moment?

My target weight is what I weighed when I left university and didn't appreciate any of it. Based on old photos, I think at that weight I have nice calves, good arms and a pretty nice bum. I would like those bits of me back please! Those bits are going to be my motivating thought for the next week.

TalkinPeace2 · 22/01/2012 20:43

OK I'll come clean. I'm dropping from BMI 23 to BMI 21. Currently at 22.4
I look fab at BMI 19 but that is too much work. BUT BMI is offset by being very, very toned
Have never had a flat tummy, have always had flat bum and thin legs. It'll do.

I'm on this (and other similar threads) because having been at BMI 28 for several years I KNOW what it takes to lose the weight and kep it off....

NewYearsRevolution · 22/01/2012 20:54

Well done TalkinPeace! I am jealous of people with good legs. In my mind, I have a personal style based around good legs. Sadly, even when slim I have legs like a leg of lamb - wide at the top and skinny at the bottom.

I wish I had time to be very toned. I think it will probably have to wait until I hard two slightly older children to be honest Grin. My priorities right now are for family time at weekends, and weekday evenings I am knackered. One day I will have older children who want to do their own thing anyway...

I am starting to learn some eating rules that help me. E.g. I am incapable of not picking at the kids' tea. Sitting with them at a time I am hungry is just too hard. So I am making sure there is lots of extra veg at meals, so I can munch on broccoli or carrot sticks or whatever.

Also, although I know the benefits of eating to stabilise blood sugar and all that, sometimes when you are exhausted after a bad night you just need a sugar boost. I am having a drink of something like Orangina. The sugar is enough of a boost, but I don't like it enough to ever want a second one ,and actually the calories aren't that high (particularly compared to starting on the biscuit tin and accidentally eating five).
