Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

If I didn't snack, I'd be so slim......

TartyMcFarty · 15/01/2012 20:38

That sounds great to me TT!

CupOfBrownJoy · 15/01/2012 20:43

Thanks for the lovely welcomes Smile

Talking Peace you can snack, it just has to be healthy! Oh and with SW you can have roast dinners too....

I have rice cakes, fruit and yoghurts in for this week, and if I'm desperate a bowl of cereal.

I have made a big SW beef stew to have every night (apart from tomorrow, I'm out for a meal), and I've got some chargrilled veg left over from last week to have with pasta for lunch.

Today I have had Special K, raspberries and 0% fat yoghurt for breakfast, a big bowl of pasta and tomato sauce for lunch, and then I got really busy around tea time so that's been it. So, a good day, but must remember not to skip meals....

I'm soooo determined! I want to see a loss on Wednesday!

TongueTwisted · 15/01/2012 20:48

Yeah I have a coffee with that yoghurt. DP always says about thinking I could be hungry when I might just be thirsty but I used to poo-poo that Blush I admit I don't drink often enough throughout the day, I'll try replace food with a drink instead then, get myself more in that habit and out of snacking.

Thank you tarty It means less eye rolls from DP when I used to pick up cocopops in the supermarket! And him steering me away from the crisp aisle!

TalkinPeace2 · 15/01/2012 20:52

I know what the diet companies say
but I also know that if everybody successfully cracked it in a few months they would go bust
they have vested interest in yoyo weight loss
I am basing my views on friends at the gym who have either never been fat or have lost the weight and kept it off for many years

I stand by my view that anybody should be able to train their stomach to go six waking hours without topping up - you manage it at night after all!

The main thing is to accurately record what you eat - especially portion sizes and then you can work out what to cut back long term so that this is the last ever weight loss thread you want to join as it is te one that has worked.

Good luck for the weigh ins tomorrow.

SparkySparrow · 15/01/2012 21:17

ToungeTwisted Have you tried knocking back a huge glass of water when you feel you need to snack? That does the trick for me! Or have a mint! Nothing taste's good after a mint so it stop's the craving.

Hathall · 15/01/2012 21:20

I agree with you TalkinPeace. Snacking is a fairly recent and western practice.
We'd all be better off not snacking but having 3 decent meals a day.

SparkySparrow · 15/01/2012 21:21

I agree that some people need to snack. I know that if I don't have something mid afternoon I start to feel a bit weird! It just has to be something healthy like fruit or veg not crisp's or biscuits. Plus you get in one of your 5 a day! Wink

mrspepperpotty · 16/01/2012 07:26

I'm on the fence about the snacking. If you don't need snacks between meals that's great, but if you find a healthy snack stops you getting too hungry and makes you less likely to binge then go for it! I do think some people need to eat more regularly than others, but I also agree that snacking can be a habit rather than real hunger. Just find what works for you!

CheerfulYank · 16/01/2012 07:35

Just marking my place for a little lurk :)

NewYearsRevolution · 16/01/2012 08:15

Oh dear, 81kg Blush. Right, back on that wagon!

Fairenuff · 16/01/2012 08:16

Morning. I almost always have a drink first if I start to feel hungry. It usually hits the spot. I used to have a mid morning snack at 10.30 but I cut that out this week and don't seem to miss it. I still have an afternoon snack at 4pm but will try to wean off it. I agree that it's ok to feel a little hungry sometimes. We're just not used to it but I, for one, have certainly got plenty of reserves to call on Grin.

CupOfBrownJoy · 16/01/2012 13:25

Happy Tuesday everyone - any weigh ins today?

I've crumbled a bit in the staff room today and had 3 Quality Street. There are always cakes and biscuits available in work and its killer, especially mid afternoon when you're on your break and its just staring at you. Only 3 though - could have been worse....

Dinner will be stew and veg (no potatoes) and no more snacks for today.

Have a good day everyone, and avoid the 4pm sugar cravings!! Grin

SparkySparrow · 16/01/2012 13:44

Tuesday ?
Monday here!
I'm dreading Tuesday - weigh day. Not expecting a loss this week but hoping there's not a gain!

TalkinPeace2 · 16/01/2012 16:24

Its not just weight - size as well : muscle is denser than fat.
I hop on the scales tomorrow .....
Feeling podge today but will be restrained

Fairenuff · 16/01/2012 16:28

Well I had my first weeks weigh in and I have lost 5lbs so happy with that Smile. Here goes week two, bring it on . . .

TalkinPeace2 · 16/01/2012 16:30

WELL DONE!

SparkySparrow · 16/01/2012 16:53

Good luck for tommorrow TalkinPeace !
Well done Fairenuff , great start! :)

Flojo1979 · 16/01/2012 17:52

TP I dont know how u do it! As for exercise being an appetite suppressant I'll have to disagree, whenever I do a gym class I'm always ravenous after.
Had a bad wkend and I'm so so hungry right now!
Had WW mushroom and cauliflower curry, was nice, tho needed rice and naan!!
Still doing Zumba Wii most days tho motivation is flagging, bout 10 mins in n I'm panting n fed up!
Good luck for tomorrows weigh ins!

TalkinPeace2 · 16/01/2012 18:04

Flojo
you are not ravenous after a class - you are thirsty ; try it - have a large glass of milk or a large cup of coffee or just a large glass of water
Wii exercise is great but you do not get the motivation of keeping up with others
I swim and chat and then do my classes (today's yoga was really hard but really toning on my poor abdominals)

out of interest, why are you eating WW pre prepared meals?
If you switch to home cooked meals now then you will be setting yourself up to succeed for years to come ....

SparkySparrow · 16/01/2012 19:30

Anyone doing the shred? How are you finding it?
My friend has offered to lend me her dvd, thought I might give it a shot.

CupOfBrownJoy · 16/01/2012 19:33

ooops I'm wishing the week away! Blush Grin

Well done Fairenuff that's a fantastic loss, nearly half a stone!!

I have to say I agree with TalkinPeace wrt prepared meals. I have a couple of tins of ww soup in for emergencies, but for SW if you are prepared to put some time in and cook from scratch (I batch cook which is lots easier) you end up with completely fat free, tasty and filling meals. Its also cheap! Smile

CupOfBrownJoy · 16/01/2012 19:34

Can someone explain to me please, what exactly is the shred??

SparkySparrow · 16/01/2012 19:38

Its a fitness dvd. I think you do it level by level. Quite short sessions so easy to fit in time wise. Waiting for someone to come along and tell me if its any good. Grin Its only a fiver on amazon so may invest!

TalkinPeace2 · 16/01/2012 19:53

I just had a look at the reviews on amazon - the bad ones - several people saying that they knackered their knees.
Most of my gym instructors HATE fitness DVDs - because people either over or underdo it and have nobody correcting their posture
the amount of squats and lunges where people do not have their front shin vertical is horrifying....

IMHO you are better power walking, cycling, swimming, not using the lift etc etc
or going to a gym and getting an instructor to guide you
