Who's in for healthy weight loss in 2012?

TartyMcFalalalalalalalalarty · 28/12/2011 12:27

I'm sat here piling on the pounds over Christmas, not quite having lost those I gained last year!

It's got to the point where it's now or never - DH and I are TTC #2, so I have to get to a healthy weight to give us the best possible chance, which is motivation in itself. I need to lose about half a stone to get into my healthy weight range, but ideally would like to lose another stone on top of that.

I've half-arsedly tried Weight Watchers and Paul McKenna over the last year, and if I gave it a decent shot, either of those would help. The main thing I'm going to do to kick start the weight loss though, is make a new year's resolution to cut right back on junk food, which is my weakness. Basically, if it's not something nutritious, or if there's a healthier alternative, I'm going to try to give it a miss!

Having cancelled my gym membership last year, I joined a running club instead and will be going out with them once a week, and once with my DM. I have a kettlebell and DVD at home, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kettlercise-Just-Women-PLUS-Kettlebell/dp/B0053YNSDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325074972&sr=8-1 this one, and will continue to use that twice a week. I'll also be going to a PAYG spinning class once a week, and maybe the odd Kettlercise class to vary the routine on the DVD a bit.

So, anybody interested in joining me? I'm not sure whether to go for it immediately from 1st January, or to wait until the 3rd (I have parties to go to on Sunday and Monday, so might be setting myself up for failure). That said, it would be a real buzz to manage a couple of social occasions straight away - they're usually another downfall for me!

Yup,
I do not drink in the week and eat 1 1/2 meals a day
on the weekend its a different matter
but I've been like it since I did WW and should be at target by mid march

Fairenuff · 14/01/2012 22:59

Hi.

I'm a little late to the thread but could I join please?

I started my diet on 8 January so will have first weigh in on Monday. My current BMI is 32 so I could do with losing 3 - 4 stone. Am just trying to stick to 1000/1500 calories a day. I do pilates once a week and badminton twice. Will possibly take up more classes as I lose weight. The motivation on this thread is great, just what I need.

putyourhatonsweetie · 15/01/2012 02:47

well done all, especially those climbing back on the wagon after a slip up. I am a shocker for waiting for Monday. As a wise friend of mine says "Imagine how fat we would be if we didn't diet for three hours on a Monday morning" Wink. Anyway, I am trying to change some of these patterns and drumroll.....

good news this week for me, weigh in and had lost 0.9 kg. total loss in two weeks is 3.3. also pleased with what the tape measure says. I have a very long way to go, but pleased with the start have made.

Hope you feel okay hathall and good luck to those with an early week weigh in.

and welcome fairenuff

Vicky08 · 15/01/2012 08:54

Good morning everyone.

Really well done putyourhatonsweetie, that's a great loss for only two weeks.

I agree lisad that the weekends are so much harder than the week, during the week I have my routine but at the weekend that all goes out the window.

Talkinpeace, thanks for the info on the no fat food. How can you only eat 1 1/2 meals a day? Is that enough calories? Don't you get hungry?

Welcome Fairenuff

Well I have to get through lunch today at IL's, no idea what we're having but I'm worried. Then home to a healthy dinner of some sort and weigh in tomorrow.

Have a good day everyone and remember it's the weekend!

mrspepperpotty · 15/01/2012 09:16

Well done putyourhatonsweetie and hello fairenuff. How are you feeling, hathall?

Newyearsrevolution, remember we are in this for the long haul! If it's no change at your weigh in next week that doesn't matter, as long as you don't give up!

Agree weekends are harder. I succumbed to tiramisu last night Blush. 3 days to get back on track before my next weigh-in.

mrspepperpotty · 15/01/2012 09:20

Here's a tip: if you prefer white rice but know brown is healthier, do a 50/50 mix. For me, this tastes as good as white!

Hathall · 15/01/2012 09:21

Morning everyone. I feel better now though I have a chesty cough now so I'm not going to exercise until it clears up. Thanks for asking!

putyourhaton well done! Thats a great start.

I agree with Talkinpeace about the rubbish yoghurts.

All the no fat and no sugar stuff is pushed at us in a way to make us think we're being healthy but its full of rubbish chemicals and artificial sweeteners.
I have Yeo Valley low fat yoghurt as it doesn't have rubbish in it. I'm sure there are others that are fine too.

SparkySparrow · 15/01/2012 09:48

Well done putyouhaton

Welcome fairenuff

Ok. So I spectacularly fell off the wagon last night, and landed in pizza, garlic bread and chocolate! Blush

But I am back on it today! My weigh in is Tue's and I'm not to hopeful but I'm hoping I can pull it back a bit in the next few day's.

I have learnt my lesson though, I have a terrible stomach ache today! That will teach me for being a pig!

Good luck at everyone's early week weigh in's!! :)

Flojo1979 · 15/01/2012 10:35

I do the half and half mix MrsP.
Good luck everyone who's weighing in tomorrow.
I had a bad day yesterday, as already said, wkends r so hard, my LO was ill so had to stay home, too close to the kitchen all day. But great suggestion about going for a walk in the sun, kick up bum I needed so going to do that now, thanx guys!

Fairenuff · 15/01/2012 11:05

Thank you for the warm welcome. I too struggle with weekends usually but as this is the first one since my diet started, and I didn't eat out at all, I've managed to stick wiith it.

Vicky08 what will you do at IL's tell them you're on a diet, or just politely eat what you're offered? It's a tricky one.

CupOfBrownJoy · 15/01/2012 11:23

Hi everyone.

My name is Cup and I'm overweight

I've had a skim through the thread and it looks like you're all full of good resolutions and motivation, which is exactly what I need!

I lost 2.5 stone with Slimming World in 2010, was doing so well keeping it off (and even lost some more) then met DFiance, who is a chef - oops! So now I have a stone to lose which MUST be gone by July, as that's when we're getting married.

I am loosely following SW again, although no meetings as I now live abroad. I lost 4 pounds last week and and am due my weekly weigh in on Wednesday - I've been really good this week so I'm hoping for another 2...

I'm one of those people who, when I'm good I have resolve of steel, but when I'm bad I'm spectacularly awful!

TalkinPeace2 · 15/01/2012 13:16

I like this thread. Its cheery and motivational!

Vicky : breakfast is tea, and orange juice ; lunch is a single slice of bread sandwich of ham or tuna and a piece of fruit, supper is the family meal.
I tend to do 2 or 3 hours at the gym in the morning.

NB I am losing weight because I crept up from my target but my BMI is lower than many.
When I did WW ten years ago I got my BMI down from over 28 to under 21.
It has now snuck back up again part way. BUT having done it and never gone back above 24 since and having lots of fit friends at the gym, I know what works.

Cupofjoy - congrats on the wedding; make sure you do plenty of yoga and pilates so that your arms, neck and shoulders are toned for all the pictures (that was my mistake when I got married and I HATE the formal photos because of it)

Flojo1979 · 15/01/2012 17:34

2-3 hrs at the gym in the morning Shock
I thought I was doing well with 20 mins!
Don't u get bored silly?

SparkySparrow · 15/01/2012 17:53

Welcome and Congratulation's Cup ! :)

Not too bad a day for me. Had a lovely walk out in the sunshine with dh and ds.
Porridge for brekkie, bacon sandwhich (oops!) for lunch, dinner will be soup and a salad.

Planning on getting the bike out for the first time tomorrow and biking it down to see the pony's! I think its about 20mins each way with a few hills so will burn a few calorie's! :)

Hathall · 15/01/2012 18:12

Shock at 2-3 hrs at the gym. Is that every day? And on quite a small amout of food. I would be collapsed in a heap.

I'm afraid today was a big fat diet fail for me.

Its always best to restart on a monday anyway!

TalkinPeace2 · 15/01/2012 18:20

Sunday is my slob out, eat a huge roast, have too much wine day

Flojo
I swim a mile (64 lengths of a 25m pool) every weekday morning
and do either 1 or 2 classes each morning
the time flies by in a sociable whirl
and no, I do not get hungry till after noon no matter how hard I work out

weight loss tip number 47.5 : exercise is an appetite suppressant. If you are busy doing strenuous work you do not need to eat
which helps in controlling snacking

Fairenuff · 15/01/2012 19:06

Congratulations Cup and well done on the weight loss last year and also last week. I have two weddings to go to this year, one in April and one in May, so I am also using that as incentive.

I plan to lose 30lb in 90 days. That's 1lb every 3 days. Doable? If I stick to diet I think it is.

TongueTwisted · 15/01/2012 19:51

Hi, may I join?

I still have my baby weight to lose. Not too much, around 14 - 21lb. I've given myself the target of my DS's first birthday at the end of March. I've also bought a lovely dress in size 10 I aim to fit into on that day so that's 2 incentives :)

Not only the baby weight, but been having a lot of back problems lately. I was given diazepam and signed off work for 2 weeks as well as physio. They told me that pregnancy, a lazy 10 months maternity leave and going back to work mid December led to these problems. Basically been told I need to exercise to strengthen my back muscles or I shall suffer my whole adult life with back pain. I'm 25 :(

So started the Jilliam Michaels Shred yesterday (back is much better now) and I also found a website called graze.com. They send healthy snacks through the post (I'm a huge snack fiend!). So if anyone wants to try them, here is a code for a free box to try 'LWTSARF'.

So healthy snacks, change in lifestlye, regular exercise - I'm determined to get my pre-pregnancy figure back! And have a back pain free life too!

Good luck everyone :)

TongueTwisted · 15/01/2012 19:57

CupOfBrownJoy Congratulations! I wish you luck in your quest for a healthy body :)

I'm opposite to you - I never stick to anything. Which is why I have told DP to make sure I do my exercise everyday, even insult me to do it (my orders) And why I went for the boxes - it saves me time standing in the bloody supermarket looking at possible 'healthy snacks' and being clueless! Although I have started to snack on olives, a good start I think!

TartyMcFarty · 15/01/2012 19:59

Really well done putyourhaton and CupOfBrownJoy. Welcome newbies!

I'm about to start 3.5 weeks of intense work so exercise is going down to maintenance for the time being and I'll have to be very conscious not to comfort eat when I'm tired and cranky. Will try to keep up to date with the thread but apologies if I don't manage it.

Half term and Center Parcs break to look forward to at the other end Smile

TalkinPeace2 · 15/01/2012 20:00

NO SNACKS
three small healthy meals a day
NO SNACKS
no eating after 8pm
a late night glass of milk if needs be
NO SNACKS

Fairenuff · 15/01/2012 20:17

That'll be no snacks then TP Grin

TalkinPeace2 · 15/01/2012 20:19

LOL Tee hee
it is the hardest part of changing the way you eat
but is the one that will ensure your BMI never rises above 24 again

TongueTwisted · 15/01/2012 20:21

I can't TalkingPeace2 I have to snack! Going from 7am to 12.30 then to 6pm without anything in between is impossible for me! Plus, my work is quite active so i need to refuel inbetween meals.

If you can tell me a way to do it, I gladly would. FWIW, it's wholgrain cereal for breakfast, a yoghurt mid morning, sandwich at lunch with a fruit, a handful of olives mid afternoon then dinner which is normally a chicken based meal with pasta or rice or potato and veg.

Is that bad? Blush

TalkinPeace2 · 15/01/2012 20:33

have you tried just having a hot drink rather than a snack?
does your tummy actually hurt with hunger or are you just habituated to snacks
9/10 times we think we are hungry, we are actually thirsty

the point of losing weight is to teach your body to use all the fuel it receives rather than store it ... unless you have NO body fat, then your body can pull reserves from elsewhere (waist, hips, etc)
