Thread for all those who attend a gym or are planning to start going. I've had so many threads on here, tried so many things, but I think I've finally found something that is going to help me lose the weight I need to.

I lift heavy things, then put them back down. I do this in a variety of ways and it helps me lose weight, or at least have more muscle than fat.

I'm keeping the diet simple, moderation, and trying to eat less carbs than normal.

Only just started this regime but when I did low carb a few weeks back, I lost 2lbs in a week with no gym membership!

I have quite a soppy goal too: I'd like to have made enough progress by Valentines Day to wear a dress, should me and my boyfriend do something together :) BF, incidentally, thinks I'm lovely as I am :) but at 5 foot 2 and 12 stone 7, something has to change in my book! :)

Personal Training tonight. Ow. Just ow. I'm going to really ache tomorrow. I plan to go to the gym again after work on Friday.

TalkinPeace2 · 11/01/2012 22:25

STRONGLY recommend classes - because then you definitely work evenly from head to foot
Bodybalance - do the low options and ignore the willowy people
Bodypump - keep the weight light but the reps up
Spin - go for it
Zumba - ditto
Bodycombat / Body attack : only for those with sound knees
Pilates
Yoga

and
swimming - if you have access to a pool, use it.

A lady at my pool started last may. She was so big she could hardly walk, let alone swim more than two lengths. So in the pool she walked - 500 metres a day, doing front crawl arms with properly cupped hands to heat her shoulders up
she is now over 6 stone lighter and active in the gym as well .... and can swim 10 lengths non stop of crawl

I love bodypump, I sometimes have no weight and just use the bar and it still works great! Not tried any others at my gym yet, so will start doing so. Will have a look for Monday, and Wednesday, and then do Friday so my body gets a break between workouts. I do have a local pool, but it's not part of the gym. Although if I sort out my Energize card again, I'd get certain sessions free. It's literally down the road from the gym as well.

Hello all, may I join you? My gym runs an eight week "get fit" programme every January. I have signed up for it and went to the welcome reception last night. I have to be weighed on Friday and start on Monday. You are put on a team and assigned a trainer. Each week we have team challenges and we are competing against about 7 other teams. There are also individual challenges. We have to keep a food log and an exercise log (signed by any of the staff at the gym). It all sounds a bit serious but I am hoping it gives me the motivation to actually go to the gym. I'd love to lose just 2lbs a week as unbelievable at the end of the 8 weeks that would be a massive 16lbs!

TalkinPeace2 · 12/01/2012 09:24

group motivation is excellent
and to all trying to lose weight - make sure your husbands are "on board" and that the kids realise that healthy eating is good
no point having a salad when the rest of the family are gorging on chips

LollipopViolet · 13/01/2012 07:59

Up hideously early, off to the gym later. It's still o dark thirty in my book, but I know I'll feel better when I go.

That's where I'm lucky Talkin, I've only got a BF at the moment and no children (long story as to how I ended up on here btw). I live with family who are being great at times, and at others make me want to scream - eating a healthy meal then offering me cake for example!

Went out last night and let it slide a bit, pizza and cinema - hence the gym early today and a good, long-ish workout in. I've learnt not to beat myself up about days like yesterday. Today's a clean slate, I can start again, and as long as I exercise, everything in moderation is OK, in my book.

I'm going to buy some super nice new gym wear today, but think I'm going to go for a size smaller, because then if it fits, great, if not, it's something to work for :)

Lollipop - new gym kit : good idea - and the lycra is actually pretty flattering even when snug! You are right about the one day at a time. Went out for lunch today and neither of us ate the crisps!

LollipopViolet · 13/01/2012 16:35

Did an Ab Blast class today.

I'm going to regret that in the morning, I really am.

And, annoyingly, headed for the steam room (my reward as it were) to find it was broken :(

Didn't manage to get any nice new clothes, but I'm having a look online at the moment, for the next time I'm near the shops. I'm quite taken with some of the three quarter length stuff, and some shorts (shock horror!). Although, today I actually wore a t-shirt I hadn't had the confidence to wear for ages, and my lycra gym shorts. Go me! :)

Yay
Tk Maxx is very good for gym kit - you have to trawl through the rails but the discounts are substantial.
I did my swim, yoga and bodybalance - legs will kill me tomorrow
now have to not eat TOO much pizza tonight.

I only have a stone to lose but its still the discipline side of it that led to me putting it back on.

MABS · 13/01/2012 16:52

can i join please/ am now doing 3 classes and two p/t sessions a week, but not losing weight as yet :(

TalkinPeace2 · 13/01/2012 16:59

MABS
its not just about weight
are you feeling more toned / less flabby ?
the weight will shift and what will appear will be FAB

MABS · 13/01/2012 17:12

i am Talkinpeace, but just would like the scales to show it too!

TalkinPeace2 · 13/01/2012 17:13

You will!
Which classes do you do?

MABS · 13/01/2012 18:30

two spin and one pump, sometimes two pump, also 2 ab attacks and 2 pt sessions

TalkinPeace2 · 13/01/2012 19:07

so lots of toning - it will work and you'll be sculpted when you hit target weight / size!

LollipopViolet · 13/01/2012 19:17

I'm finding that, I've lost 6lbs so far, but I'm noticing clothes are fitting better, which is fab! Dress for the 14th of next month might be doable after all :)

Cool!

I swim with a lady who as lost best part of 8 stone since May. Because she is swimming and exercising every day, her skin is shrinking perfectly with her and her muscles are starting to show through. Another 4 stone and she will look amazing and as if she had never been so big.

The down side of swimming is huge shoulder blade muscles so I always hang over bras until I get right down to target weight!!

Muscle is a lot denser than fat so you can drop a size without dropping that much weight.
GO FOR IT

cardibach · 13/01/2012 21:46

I made it to the gym tonight and nearly killed myself on cardio stuff - mainly bike. Felt virtuous afterwards! I have eaten chicken and roasted veg for tea. I haven;t lost any weight this week, either, and I'm trying to tell myself it is because of muscle gain after extensive walking, some free weights etc. I wore a pair of trousers today that I had stopped wearing before the summer because they were too tight.

MABS · 14/01/2012 10:27

well done Cardi

LollipopViolet · 14/01/2012 12:27

Well done Cardi :)

I'm DEFINITELY feeling yesterdays class. All was good til I tried to sit up to get out of bed! Ouch ouch ouch.

OP posts:
MABS · 15/01/2012 19:53

no pain no gain eh :)

TalkinPeace2 · 16/01/2012 16:27

swam a mile in the sunshine this morning ...
how are others doing?

LollipopViolet · 16/01/2012 18:15

Doing OK, managed another workout today, which is good. Unfortunately something's cropped up at uni and it's stressing me out already. I'm only going back for a semester, so didn't apply for student finance as I was told I didn't pay as I'm retaking modules. The evil people have sent me an invoice for £3,375! I don't have that :( So need to go in on Wednesday and see someone.

MABS · 17/01/2012 10:19

pt today and pump tomorrow :)

TalkinPeace2 · 17/01/2012 11:08

no swim or gym today
lots of power walking in the sunshine for today and tomorrow
something to do with the car breaking down!
