Great!! more Paulers!!! welcome :)

HNN I haven't read the journal or filled in the diary yet, but I intend to this year and will pencil it in so I can reuse as necessary.

Just had dinner at Mums house (big mistake! Yorkshire lass ~ feeds everyone up) am bloated uncomfortable.

For breakfast I have two tablespoons of Jordans nut and seed with a dollop or two of Greek style yoghurt. It doesn't go soggy and needs a lot of chewing. If I was eating the amount of cereal I used to eat, I couldn't afford the Jordans, but a 750g box lasts me 3 weeks which is fab!! and working it out equals around 36g per day...a year ago, I'd have eaten 1/3 of the box in one sitting Blush.

BigBoobiedBertha · 04/01/2012 20:53

Hello! Hi to the newbies and the oldbies and all the bies inbetween. It is certainly busy around here which is excellent!

Well, all my best laid plans to download the CD onto my new phone have gone awry. I can't work out how to do it. Never had an Apple product before but as I am sure the rest of you know, you can't down load from Windows Media Player to the phone so I had to download iTunes but that hasn't been easy either. And then when I did it it told me that actually I had downloaded the wrong version (should have been the 64 bit rather than 32 bit Confused) I eventually did that but by then I had lost the will to live and went to bed instead.

All this technology is very well in theory but it is not easy in practice, not helped by DS2 effectively annexing the phone to play some game he discovered. By the time I have wrestled the phone off him (this evening he was trying to look at the Madjeski Stadium on the Maps function - he knows more about how it works than I do. Hmm) I have lost interested in playing with it myself.

The eating is going OK during the day but evenings are still difficult - too many Christmas bits and pieces lurking in dark corners to trip me up. But they will be gone soon and won't be replaced.

stripygiraffe · 04/01/2012 20:56

Hi to even more newbies. Yay I don't feel so new anymore.

I'm liking the Jordan's idea - lots of chewing, lots of taste plus must be better for you than refined white flour and butter.

Btw for those who feel they lack control around biscuits etc something that has worked for me is telling myself that I can have WHATEVER I want but that I MUST be hungry. This means I don't feel I am denying myself (because I am not) but knowing that I can have it later means I often don't get to it. Does that make sense?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 04/01/2012 21:10

BBB - if you download the CD into iTunes, then you can create a playlist with it in which you can then drop into your phone if your phone is plugged into your laptop.

There are too many Christmas bits lurking here too, far too tempting!

Solo · 04/01/2012 22:44

Not much in the way of Christmas goodies here...

Stripy the Jordans is lovely and there are many flavours. If you buy the 'natural' ones, there's not much in the way of sweet stuff in it. I buy the boxed stuff which is 750g box, has raisins, seeds and nuts in it and lots more besides. I did buy the 1kg bag because it was cheaper, but it's not very pleasant as I've been spoiled with the other one with whole nuts in it etc and there is a lot of wheat in it.

Here's the ingredients from the one I like:

British Conservation Grade? Wholegrain Cereals (36%) (Oat Flakes, Barley Flakes), Dried Fruit (27%) (Flame Raisins, Chopped Dates), Nuts (11%) (Chopped Brazil Nuts, Cashew Nut Pieces, Almonds, Roasted Hazelnuts), Toasted Wheat Flakes (Wholegrain Wheat, Sugar, Barley Malt Syrup), Seeds (2%) (Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds).

This is the one I don't like so much (has loads of wheat flakes in it which is probably why it's cheaper and it's not so nice...

British Conservation Grade? Wholegrain Cereals (77%) (Wheat Flakes, Oat Flakes, Barley Flakes), Dried Fruit & Nuts (23%) (Sultanas, Raisins, Chopped Dates, Sliced Brazil Nuts, Roasted Hazelnuts).

Yummy!!!

BigBoobiedBertha · 05/01/2012 09:58

Solo - another useless statistic for you but people who eat a handful of nuts a day weight less than those who don't, despite them being high in fat. They are very filling and good for you too. There are good nutritional reasons for having the more expensive one it you can afford it!

Just been on a thread about diets for 12 year olds. Needless to say I said don't do it and follow the PMcK principles! Not sure about making such a bit deal of losing weight that a 12 yr old listens to the CDs though - seems to be a little to focussed on food in my mind which might make an issue where there isn't one. Children should be making healthy choices of course but the CD seems a step too far. What do you all think? (Good for her mother though who intends to do WW to show her DD the 'correct' way of eating ShockSmile)

ppeatfruit · 05/01/2012 10:05

Morning all solo would it not be more economical to buy yr own ingredients and make yr own muesli with the things you like most IFYSWIM Smile.

DH decided to have an after N.Y. celebration with some friends last night and we drank champagne to start and they continued with highly rich food and wines to match!! I did not join after the champagne and of course couldn't match the eating either but I'm still feeling SHXX this morning which is not like me!!!

ppeatfruit · 05/01/2012 10:22

Sorry folks i didn't read the previous page before posting Blush Yes welcome all the newbies it is really good to have some new blood and ideas etc.

I found once i started to chew 15 to 20 times then you CAN'T eat so many biscs. etc. you begin to feel sick quite soon. Grin

HeyNonnyNo · 05/01/2012 13:50

Afternoon all, I'm loving this thread! Thank you thank you thank you for the words of help and encouragement. I think they're helping. Stripygiraffe I love your tip on allowing yourself the treat you fancy, but only when you're hungry. I'm beginning to feel hungry occassionally, which embarassingly has been a rare occurence. It's good to recalibrate the system a bit.

So, food is tasting amazing! Is that a Paul McK effect? I have really reallly enjoyed eating today, and managed to eat quite a lot less, I think, than normal. Lunch was scrambled duck eggs on homemade toast (poncy I know but try it then judge me!) and then shared a comice pear with the smallies. Wow! Om nom nom. Solo and ppeatfruit I'm a homemade museli gal, when I get my act together, and not sure it saves a lot of money TBH, but you can make it just how you like it.

How do you guys handle family mealtimes when everyone sits down together? I'm not necessarily hungry then, but family meals are important!

Solo · 05/01/2012 15:27

It's only working out at between £1 and £1.15 ish a week to buy the Jordans...I'm pretty sure it'd cost more to make it up myself and then tbh, I'd more likely munch the nuts and then run out for the actual museli, so it'd be a bit pointless in my case. I have done it in the past though, but I'm happy to do what I'm doing now :) and I'll probably mix the bag of cheaper one in with 2 boxes so it doesn't taste so bad or go to waste.

I haven't looked at the 12yo diet thread (yet!) but I do think that trying to train your Dc's from an early age is a good thing so that it isn't necessary to put them on diets at 12. Having said that, my own 13yo Ds is a glutton and is also rake like right now, but I keep trying to explain that it will eventually catch up with him...he had a stomach ache last night and again I tried telling him that 3 chews per mouthful doesn't do anyone any good and that digestion starts in the mouth with chewing etc etc...did it go in? I very much doubt it!

BigBoobiedBertha · 05/01/2012 16:09

How about getting some nuts and adding them to the cheaper museli if you think it would be more palatable. It might be cheaper but I suppose it would depend on what sort of nuts you used.

I think all pre-teenage and teenage boys are gluttons. Well maybe apart from DH's nephew who is incrediably picky and hardly eats at all but that just seems weird compared to other boys so I think he is unusual. Whether they get fatter I think depends on whether they are sporty or not - that usually keeps a lid on the potential for an expanding waistline at least until they give it up later in life. My DS1 isn't in the least bit sporty so I have to keep a very close eye on what he eats and although he is a bit chunky his height is in proportion to his weight at least as far as his clothes are concerned so I am not too worried. Both DH and I are quite naturally muscular and bulky under all the flab so I suppose our boys will be the same . DS2 loves football but if he doesn't have anybody to play with he is a couch potato and he is quite chunky at the moment, tipping over to fat. I am not sure why as he isn't eating any more or exercising any less than he did so I am hoping a growth spurt is imminent otherwise i am going to have to get strict and I don't really want to make food an issue or a forbidden thing so I would rather avoid that.

Anyway, my own view is that children should be taught the PMcK type principles as an ideal way to live but they don't need the CD which is more about 'reprogramming' and reinforcing the right way of eating in adults brains which have gone a bit haywire over food. To me the whole concept of dieting for teenagers is fraught with danger. What will it do to their relationship with food and their own body? And what about if they haven't finished growing yet? Should you be cutting back on their calorie intake at all?

MardyBra · 05/01/2012 17:07

"Anyway, my own view is that children should be taught the PMcK type principles as an ideal way to live but they don't need the CD which is more about 'reprogramming' and reinforcing the right way of eating in adults brains which have gone a bit haywire over food."

I quite agree Bertha. I come from a family of overeaters, where everyone would always wolf down food to make sure that they "got their share". Both my parents are comfort eaters - possibly a result of rationing in the war. I get really annoyed when DM tries to show affection to my DC through chocolate and junk snacks. I'm sure part of my eating problems are due to their attitudes and my "programming" as a child. I don't want the cycle continuing into the next generation if I can help it.

DH is a natural Pauler though, as are his parents. We must seem like a bunch of complete gluttons to him.

MardyBra · 05/01/2012 18:02

How is everyone doing btw? Especially newbies.

stripygiraffe · 05/01/2012 20:21

Hi guys how's everyone doing?

I'm getting weighed tomorrow. It's only been a week but I only see this friend (NHS scales) every two weeks and I need to get in the right rota.

I had a 'not as hungry' day today after yesterday when I was ravenous.
DH had to pop out to the shop for blue milk while I was cooking and asked if I wanted anything. I said no, because I really didn't.
Anyway he came back with two Magnums but there was no way I could that slowly so he ate bothGrin

I've been reading bits of the old threads and someone posted a link to a woman talking about what hungry/full feels like. It has helped me today. I'll try to find it if anyone fancies seeing it.

I have a question: I find it hard to chew some foods 20 times - pasta being one of them - will it be ok if I leave a gap between mouthfuls that would equal more chewing? I obviously chew as much as I can - 15 is the best I can do.

Sorry to ramble Blush

BigBoobiedBertha · 05/01/2012 20:35

I think you do just have to leave a gap sometimes. Some things just won't stand up to 20 odd chews - soft fruit or jelly as well as pasta.

Or maybe the technique is to sort of suck it, which doesn't really explain what I mean but where you don't use your teeth, you just move it around your mouth to get the flavour. That has the same effect. Sort of how you might with ice cream or soft fruit. Use your tongue moves it around and squashs it against the roof of your mouth. The point is not so much the action of chewing but getting the full flavour and a full mouth for as long as possible, giving you time to feel satisfied when you have eaten enough.

I find the danger with chewing is that I race through the counting and chew too fast which sort of defeats the object. Blush Maybe the aim should be to keep something in your mouth for 15 seconds, say (I don't know exactly, just thinking out loud at the moment). And then if you really can't do that, because whatever it is really has no substance like yoghurt, then pause between mouthfuls.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/01/2012 21:08

Evening all :)

I'm really struggling and keep eating when I know I'm not hungry, I'm almost deliberately ignoring my lack of appetite and eating anyway.

I am eating slowly though and doing the chewing, and I agree that you cannot chew everything that many times. Some things just don't have enough substance to them, even though they are 'real' foods as opposed to anything processed.

learningtofly · 05/01/2012 23:10

Hello another newbie checking in.

Today was tough - I struggled to eat slowly and consciously at breakfast due to ds being a monkey and it was back to shovel everything down asap before he tipped an entire box of cereal on the floor. Nevermind I shall try harder tomorrow!

At work though I managed to only eat 2 chocolates rather than my normal 20 so I think that's quite positive.

I had a fit of giggles listening to the cd on the first night (shamefully!) and settled down last night to try again and we had a power cut. But hopefully there should be no problems tonight!

Solo · 05/01/2012 23:43

IME it does take some time to get used to and into this way of life, so don't be put off if you aren't quite 'getting it' straight away; just keep on keeping on :)

Solo · 06/01/2012 00:02

Shock SEEN THIS?Shock Unbelievable!! I've linked to the last page, but look at the first page! it's an old thread, but still going on. I'm just shocked that anyone would pay so much for such a crappy diet plan.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/01/2012 00:11

What the fuck? ShockShock

Those people are bonkers, and have the single-minded aura of those who have been severely brainwashed!!

Bonkers!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/01/2012 00:12

Forgot to say - £800 a month!

And I thought we spent a lot on food in this house Grin

Solo · 06/01/2012 00:31

I know!!! Someone was saying £220pm which is almost a grand Shock. I have £35pw to feed me and the Dc's! If I had £1k, I'd replace my leaking roof/duff electrics/and a number of other disastrous housey things iyswim? Blooming mad.

Solo · 06/01/2012 00:32

Tut! £220pw, not pm.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/01/2012 00:35

People were talking about using savings to pay for it, which is utterly insane IMO.

I sometimes wonder whether that is my problem with my weight, that I am essentially pretty happy as I am and I don't have that uber-vanity thing that says 'oh god I'm 7lbs overweight, I can't possibly leave the house', which is a slight exaggeration but it is how some people seem to think.

I am up too late again, and must sleep...

babysbreath · 06/01/2012 07:49

Morning Ladies

I have been very good so far, listening to PM each night.

I am trying to resist getting out the scales and weighing myself, as I want to wait until I have been doing this for 14 days - it is not quite a week as yet!!!!

I am finding the chewing 20 times a bit of a chore, and as the family don't know I am doing this, I feel quite self conscious.
