30 Day Shred - New Starts

Hello everyone,

I know there are a lot of shred-heads on here already, but many of the current threads are full of people well into the programme. I just started the 30 Day Shred today. I'm 5'11", 258lbs (18st 6lbs Blush) and in dire need of getting fit, strengthening my core and losing some weight.

Has anyone else recently started, or are planning to?

L2 D3 down and still feeling good. Again, shoulders were burning throughout but feeling fine now. Will do D4 tomorrow and then have a day off (along with a couple of days off work - wooohoooo!) but will be back on it Saturday morning. Preferring L2 to L1 at the moment.

Overtiredmum · 22/09/2011 18:12

L2 D4 done - and ouch! Struggled today and I really hurt tonight, but its TOTM due any time, which is why I think I struggled, but am having a day off tomorrow, which I feel I need. Legs are really aching and my arms feel so heavy. Apart from that, doing OK, and my snug jeans are now just about fitting perfect so something is obviously happening, and I'm ashamed to say that although I have cut down on the quantity, probably could do better with the quality of food I am eating at the moment, although will blame TOTM for that.

Hope all ok with you, Mama x

moosemama · 22/09/2011 19:28

Hi Overtired

Well done for sticking with it through the awful TOTM exhaustion.

Fantastic that you're starting to feel it in the way your clothes fit too. You are about the same stage I was when I took my second lot of measurements and was really shocked at the results.

Totally crazy couple of days here, but have managed to stick with level 2 and today managed to get back up to doing Natalie for everything except the lateral/oblique crunches. I also used dh's 5lb weights for some of the exercises. I was surprised how easy I found the plan jacks - I hadn't tried doing the Natalie version of those, as for some reason I thought I'd never manage it, but actually they're fine.

So am feeling slightly more confident about moving up to level 3 on Saturday now.

I have had a slice of ds2's pizza this evening. I was all accounted for in my calore/fat/protein/carb count, but as you said - not the best calorie choice I could have made.

I'm finding it harder to think what to eat now the weather is cooling down and its getting dark earlier. My body is calling for warming comfort food - lots of mashed potato etc, but my head wants me to stick with sensible salads.

Overtiredmum · 22/09/2011 19:46

I tried the plank jacks today too, and agree they aren't as bad as you think they're going to be. Its amazing how quickly you see/feel yourself adapting, itsn't it?

Glad all OK, I am glad when i finish here at 11pm tonight, I have 4 nights off which I really need! Yippeeeee

moosemama · 22/09/2011 19:55

You're adapting a lot quicker than me - I'm on day 19 of level 2, so I really have no excuse for not being able to do the whole thing on the advanced level by now.

Enjoy your time off work and don't spend it worrying about weightloss and fitness. Grin

moosemama · 24/09/2011 18:42

Well, I did it. I procrastinated, tried to persuade dh that perhaps I should take a day off and start tomorrow and in the end just got stuck in and ...... did day 1 of level 3.

I enjoyed it actually. Very different from level 2, which is great after doing the same workout for 20 days. Its tough, but doable and flew past. There's a lot of jumping (plyometrics) so my legs are aching a bit and boy did I sweat, but in a good way - if there is such a thing. Grin

moosemama · 25/09/2011 15:53

Day 2, Level 3 completed.

I procrastinated again and for some reason found it harder today than I did yesterday, but at least its over ...... until tomorrow!

Overtiredmum · 27/09/2011 19:11

Well done Mama! Well I am back after 4 days away from work and I had done a total of zero shredding BUT in my defence, I have been fighting an awful tummy bug that DS seems to have brought home from school.

Slightly better today, but still struggling, but started back on D1 of L2 - it was hard but glad I've done it, thought it was best to start from the beginning of L2 again since I've had a few days off, so aiming to start L3 by next Friday - if I can x

moosemama · 27/09/2011 19:46

Sorry to hear you've been ill Overtired - and on your break as well. Sad Hope you're feeling better soon.

I hate this term for school related bugs. Ds1 is currently really poorly with a horrible flu bug he's brought home, dd is sneezing, so it looks like she's next and all perfect timing as Mum is supposed to be having all three dcs for the first time ever this Friday while dh and I go to to a friend's birthday party. I hardly ever leave my dcs overnight, maybe once a year max and then not every year, but every single time I have - without fail, one of them is ill. Last time we had to come home early because ds1 was throwing up everywhere, my sister (who has had 3 dcs of her own and now has just one left at home) couldn't cope.

Anyhoo, back to the shred.

I did day 3, level 4 yesterday, after first doing a 4 mile round trip to the next village with dd in the pushchair on the way there and dd and her equivalent weight again in shopping (mainly root veg) on the way back. I can't quite believe I managed to shred after that, but I am determined not to let up and to do level 3 for 10 days straight if I possibly can.

Did day 4 today, but am doing a lot of Anita and thinking I'll work my way into doing Natalie. The pace is a lot faster than the other two levels, so there's not as much time to work on form. I'm hoping by starting with Anita I'll get my form right before pushing myself. Am not going to give up until I can do pretty much all Natalie for level 3 though.

Overtiredmum · 27/09/2011 22:07

No you've scared me - Level 4??? ha ha

Sounds like you're doing great! I felt slightly better after shredding, for all of an hour, once the adrenaline had worn off, I soon felt crap again. Honestly, had I not known any better, I would think I am pg - BUT AM NOT, HONEST!! Its a weird bug, but definitely something thats going round, couple of my friends and some of the kids have had it - mine just seems to be dragging on. Not eaten tonight and have pains, although it could be hunger, am just not too tempted to eat.

moosemama · 27/09/2011 22:43

Blush Level 4!!!

Now that would definitely scare me. Grin

Honestly, its obviously not just my body I've worn out with all this exercise, my brain is apparently the worse for wear as well!

Sorry to hear your bug isn't improving. Drs tend to recommend not exercising when you have a bug, because your body is already working hard enough to heal itself. I know how frustrating it must be, but maybe you should give it a rest for a couple of days and try again when you are fully recovered?

DharmaLovesDraco · 28/09/2011 18:16

Hi all,

May join you? I am currently on L1D10 and dreading level 2 tomorrow I have only just stopped dying at level 1 Blush

Are you meant to have any days off inbetween or do you all do it every day?

moosemama · 28/09/2011 19:49

Hello Dharma, well done on getting through level 1.

Don't worry about level 2, you'll be fine, I was a complete beginner and very unfit when I started level 1, moved up to level 2 after 10 days, but then stayed on level 2 for 20 days, because I wanted to be sure I had significantly improved my fitness before going up to level 3. I worked my way up from Anita/beginners to doing all Natalie/advanced for level 2 before I finally moved up and am back to doing mostly Anita now for level 3.

From what I've read, Jillian advises on some of her other dvds that people should work out for no more than 6 days a week, because muscles need rest time to heal and repair. She doesn't say for the shred and a lot of people assume that means you should do 30 days straight.

I take a break every now and again, but try to do it most days if I possibly can. I've had to miss my workout today because I just couldn't fit it in, as I've had a crazy stressful day and am way too tired now. My last day off before today was Sunday 18th September.

So ... level 3 day 5 will now be tomorrow for me.

moosemama · 29/09/2011 10:45

Right, have just done my level 3, day 5 and actually managed to do a little more Natalie and slightly less Anita.

Am considering doing a level 2 later today to try and make up for missing yesterday (no way I could do two level 3s in one day) but will have to see how it goes, as I still have ds1 off sick and dd came down with it overnight as well. She had me up just about every half an hour throughout the night.

moosemama · 29/09/2011 17:37

Managed to squeeze a level 2 in at dd's naptime.

Thought I'd find it ok-ish having done it for 20 days, but apparently not. I'd forgotten how much I hate those oblique jump twist thingies and chair squats with a v-raise!

Overtiredmum · 29/09/2011 18:27

I hate the second rep of chair squats with v-raise - I am usually fit to scream by then!

Well, I took last night off work as still felt bad, still don't feel great today but am back at work - somehow I seem to be able to rest more at work than I do at home Confused!

L2 D3 complete, although still struggling, am guessing still from the tummy bug. Day off tomorrow as shop/wash/iron day. But will pick it back up on Saturday morning.

Weather is glorious at the moment, and determined to get straight tomorrow so I can have a lovely weekend at home with the kids in the garden to make the most of it.

Well done Mama, somehow I have fallen well behind you now.

moosemama · 29/09/2011 19:13

I am with you on the v-raises, they make me feel like I'm screaming as well.

Sorry to hear you still aren't feeling well, another day off shredding tomorrow might be a good idea while you are still recovering.

It doesn't matter where you are compared to me, we're just here to support each other, its not a competition.

I was hoping for a nice weekend as well, by my lot have scuppered that by bringing home a horrible fluey virus thing. Ds1 has been off sick since Tuesday and dd has come down with it today, so only ds2 left to go now. Hmm

Overtiredmum · 29/09/2011 20:40

Oh no Mama, there seems to be so many different bugs doing the rounds at the moment - hope they are all feeling better soon.

And you're right, not a competition - but I want to look as fab as you! x

moosemama · 29/09/2011 20:45

Grin Overtired, you have no idea how un-fab I look at the moment! Wink

I did get my hair cut for the first time in months yesterday though and its the first time I can ever remember liking it straight away. I usually come out of the hairdressers either really angry or close to tears. Blush

Overtiredmum · 30/09/2011 19:18

Had my day off today and feeling much better, so will definitely be L2 D4 tomorrow.

Starting to feel the benefit of it, clothes are definitely looser and my arms are looking like they have some definition in them (never thought THAT would ever be possible!)

Desperate to get my hair cut, think the last time was when DD was about 3 months old, shes 2.5 years now - ooops! We mums always come bottom of the list, don't we?!!

I probably won't get on here over the weekend, so hope you manage to enjoy some of the lovely weather, and I'll be back again Monday x

DharmaLovesDraco · 30/09/2011 20:47

Weeeellllll I had a total fail at level 2 yesterday, found it all so much harder I could barely do any of it :(

Having today off as totally knackered having spent the day at Lego Land, will retry tomorrow and say that is my day 1 Grin

moosemama · 01/10/2011 11:59

Good to hear you are feeling better Overtired. Have a good weekend. Smile

Dharma, sounds like you were ready for a day off. I think its such an intense workout that if you are already tired or ill etc its too much. Good idea to take a break today and start again tomorrow. Hope you feel better for a good rest. Smile

I managed to do level 3, day 6 yesterday, but will be taking a break today myself. We did manage to go out last night after all, as Mum came round and babysat the dcs at home. Didn't get in until 3am though, so am really feeling it today. I was very good though, only one G&T (slimline of course) and pints of water for the rest of the night.

It was good to get out . My last night out was dh's 40th in February. Lots of people I haven't seen since then as well and finally people noticed my weight/inches loss. One person who is now a designated friend for life, told me I look 10 years younger than last time they saw me - and coming from them that is a massive compliment. Grin

TurkeyBurgerThing · 02/10/2011 14:36

Hello! [wavey]

Aaaaah I feel SO much better. Been "meaning" to start the Shred for months now. Finally fired it up and have done day 1 phase 1. Delighted as I feel fabulous. It's not too much of a killer either. I shall, however, be putting my sports bra on tomorrow!

I've lost about 3 1/2 on a good day stone in the last year through just dieting alone. It's been really tough at times and I'll have WEEKS where I lose nothing and then have that week in my cycle when if it's not bolted down I'll attempt to eat it.

However, I feel that I've come as far as I can with the weight loss on it's own and that in order to lose any more (realistically 1 1/2 stone I'd say which will lead me into COMPLETELY unknown territory!!) I'm going to have to start some serious exercise. I would love to join a gym in an ideal world but with 3DC and no creches on offer, and a husband who works 7 days a week it's just not going to happen!

I still wobble a lot. In fact I started another thread a few days back about how despite all the weight I've lost, I look in the mirror and see NO difference and every time I meet my target, I'm not happy and move it even more!

I'm hoping seeing results through toning up with the 30DS will make my brain actually feel some sort of satisfaction.

moosemama · 02/10/2011 15:20

Hello TurkeyBurgerThing

You'll definitely see results with the shred. I haven't lost that much weight since I started, but I look completely different and have lost a lot of inches (last measure-up is up the thread somewhere). I am a little under two and half stone down since I started trying to lose weight back in June and have one stone, ten ounces left to go to reach my goal weight.

My dh finished his shred last week and started at level 1 again today, doing all Natalie and using weights for the cardio circuits.

I didn't shred yesterday and probably won't today, which will be the first time I've missed more than a day. Not happy about it, but I have no choice, as I'm only a couple months out of an ME/CFS crisis and need to listen to my body, which hasn't recovered since my night out of Friday.

Overtiredmum · 03/10/2011 17:19

Greetings all, L2 D5 done and feel good. I actually wore a pair of tailored shorts yesterday, which 2 weeks ago I couldn't even do up! Am really pleased. Not weighed myself, as I don't want the disappointment of the scales not having moved etc, especially since I am not actually dieting but I am happy that my clothes are starting to fit properly.
