RG wow, you do pump 5 times a week [mind boggles how on earth to fit that it] you must be seriously hard!

I aim for once a week but partly because I must focus on duathlon and triathlon in September [slightly nervous thinking about it].

I have read my new book - quite interesting.... basically he thinks that if you want to have proper nutrition on restricted calorie diet, you don't have any leeway to eat processed carbs at all and even limited leeway to eat even any wholegrain carbs. Without proper nutrition he thinks risk that you'll lose muscle mass rather than fat (need to do weight training too to avoid muscle loss). Most important to eat protein and essential fatty acids & healthy fats, stacks of veggies and a couple of pieces of fruit a day. Wholegrain carbs good after a workout.

That makes sense to me Forever- Thats what they say on the IPD that I follow. You burn your own fat by eating protein with healthy fats and green vege.

foreverondiet · 07/08/2011 11:38

I guess a bit different from IPD as he thinks (wholegrain) carbs good, esp after a work out and he encourages a couple of pieces of fruit a day, so its not a ketosis diet - he thinks better to eat fruit / healthy carbs than extra (not healthy) fat. IIRC IPD allows / encourages butter / cream / hard cheese / fatty meat etc.

But yes he thinks ketosis diets work as they mean you eat enough protein, and generally you eat less calories - he thinks that if you don't eat enough protein whilst dieting you end up losing lean muscle mass as well as fat, rather than needing to be in ketosis to burn off fat etc.

Bodypump 5 days a week is seriously impressive RG! Have you noticed it's made a big difference?

I ran for the first time in a week today and typically it poured down 5 mins after I left the house. I did Jillian Michaels 6week 6 pack yesterday and have a sore bum today :) which I hope means all those lunges worked. Needless to say, I haven't done the 30 day shred which I did plan on doing every day in August.

On the topic of exericse, I plan to do 1 x body pump; 1 x 1hr bootcamp; 2 x 30 - 60 min run per week. I'd like to do a JM workout on days I don't do anything else, however would I be best to do another body pump instead of say 40 mins of cardio? My main aim at the moment is weight loss, and I think running is the best way for me to lose weight but perhaps an extra body pump may help?

foreverondiet · 07/08/2011 23:26

wifezilla my focus has to be on running at the moment since I have the duathlon hanging over me. Otherwise I'd be doing the bodypump if I had a choice as I don't want any more WEIGHT loss but would like a little more FAT loss. One bodypump and some JM is already a reasonable amount of toning / weights though...

In terms of weight loss - running builds loads of cals per minute, and bodypump might burn less per minute but gives better afterburn, plus extra weights ensures that the weight you do lose is fat not muscle. I'd say do what you enjoy!

Sorry, I need a bit of inspiration. I think I need to up the protein in my breakfasts because it is only 10am and I am starving. I had shredded wheat fruitful this morning with a handful of blueberries and I've already eaten a satsuma since being at work.
I was hoping to get to at least 11am before eating veg sticks with yoghurt and blue cheese dip but I might have to crack that out now.

Help me please ladies

mrspnut have you tried porridge in the mornings?

rude health do a great range and it fills me up for ages

ezzie21 · 08/08/2011 11:54

its been a month since i last measured

nothing off my waist but an inch off my hips

im going to try and swim again as the shred is too complicated to do with

a small child joining in clutching tins of beans and 2 dogs barking at me laying

on the floor!

mrspnut · 08/08/2011 18:05

Thanks, I usually have porridge during the winter but might have a look for the Rude Health ones.

I think I shall have scrambled egg and ham tomorrow morning.

febes · 08/08/2011 21:40

I would definately reccommend protein rich breakfasts. 1 egg and 1 slice of bacon fills me up until 12 easily. Or mushrooms and bacon. Smoked salamon and scrambled eggs. Ham and cheese omelette. Left-overs? This morning I had leftovers- 3 brussell sprouts a small spoonful of celeriac dauphaniose and a vension sausage. I am stuffed and won't eat until lunch and all for only 260 cals.

RGPargy · 08/08/2011 21:51

WannaBeMaryPoppins What is your first language? I would never have guessed that you were not English! Compliments are great aren't they!

mrspnut Stopping drinking is so hard isn't it, especially when the sun is high and it's the end the day...... Strawberry beer goes down exceptionally well in those circumstances!

As for breakfasts, mine is generally the same every day and gets me though a morning at the gym too. I have Activia yoghurt with 100g strawberries and 50g raspberries with 10g cheerios sprinkled on top (just for a bit of variety lol). When i'm at work however i am so bored that i do tend to snack but it's only on seeds generally! 10.30am is my official snack time lol. Wink Scrambled egg and ham sounds nice! Or how about an omelette?

Forever Yes, I do pump quite a lot! I do it on Mon, Weds, Sat and Sun and sometimes Tuesday night if i have the extra energy after Body Balance! I do seem to spend alot of my time at the gym, i have to admit, but i do wonder if it would be the same if i didn't have such good friendships at the gym now!?! We are always having coffee after classes and arranging nights out and even (fitness) weekends away! Life would be very dull if i didn't have the gym, it has to be said. Saddo that i am! Blush

Wifezilla Yes it's deffo making a difference now, topped with my new lower carb "diet" as well. I have had so many compliments over the last 4 weeks it's unbelievable! It's more or less every day that someone says something about me losing weight! Yay for Body Pump! :o Sounds like you do lots of exercise already! As for more cardio, people often dont realise that Pump is cardio (although not as intensive as pure cardio) as well as strength training so doing an extra pump class would certainly benefit you! (Can you tell i love pump?!! :o)

Ezzie lol @ the kids and dogs jumping around! Well done on the inch loss! Whenever i measure i never seem to lose anything, despite the scales going down!! My tape measure hates me, i'm sure! lol

Wow, sorry about the mahooooosive post and thanx for reading if you've got this far! :o

foreverondiet · 09/08/2011 10:16

mrspnut have the same breakfast almost every day ? 2 egg omelette, plus yoghurt with oatbran. Sometimes add berries to yoghurt if I have, and more recently have been adding linseed. Very occasionally if I run out of eggs would have yoghurt and muesli. I snack on fruit (2-3 pieces a day), nuts (generally one 25g portion), yoghurt, cottage cheese on ryvita/oatcake, homous on ryvita/oatcake, peanut butter on ryvita/oatcake.

Lulabellarama - don?t think booze and weight loss go well together. I don?t drink but wouldn?t describe myself as teetotal (although you?d probably describe me that way). Nothing against wine with lunch with friends or if I go out with friends (now that I am at target), but like chocolate / crisps etc, I don?t think its something you can do regularly if you want to loose weight. Can you not just drink a little so you don?t end up with a hangover and hence don?t overdo the carbs afterwards?

RG wow you are doing so well, actually saw something in this months Zest that a study had shown that cutting down carbs significantly improved weight loss. Just shows that you don?t actually have to do a very low carb ketogenic diet to get weight loss.

I tried to eat all my exercise calories last night, and I did manage, BUT I realised that is was hard to eat that many clean calories, and maybe if I am doing clean eating I don?t actually have to measure anymore. Once I started on the chocolate and biscuits it was of course easy to eat them. And I ended up feeling full and bloated Sad.

Ok you can all tell now that I am an accountant, but I was just updated my weight loss super-spreadsheet Smile and I have just been faced with a major revelation!

In the first few months of my diet I lost the following number of lbs per month: 15, 6, 8, 8; this represented around 82%-88% fat.

In month 5, I lost 5lb but the percentage was 107% fat (ie I gained muscle) ? this was when I started doing low carb, ie high protein diet.

(The next month I also lost 5lbs and this was only 50% fat, by far the worst result of the diet ? but this month included 2 week holiday)

From month 7 I upped the resistance training (as before then was focussing on my triathlon), and since my fat loss has consistently been more than 100% of my weight loss ? in recent couple months more like 140%.

From what I have read it should be the other way around, ie at the start of the diet should lose more fat, so this shows that resistance training and high protein diet actually works to preserve lean muscle as you get closer to target. I now regret not doing more resistance training at the start as much easier to preserve lean muscle than to build it again. Also the tesco diets totals plan allocated a lot of points to protein, so this encouraged me to cut down protein portion sizes when actually I shouldn't have.

Just 1 stone left 2 go Smile
Trying 2 lose 2lbs a week- so hopefully by the middle of October I will have reached my target weight Grin

foreverondiet · 09/08/2011 18:56

tinker well done! I hope you reach your target and continue to lose 2lbs a week but don't get despondent if its slows down a little bit... the last stone is the hardest as your body doesn't like its fat reserves being plundered!

OP posts:
foreverondiet · 09/08/2011 19:00

Lulabellarama how much are you drinking? Add up the calories that the alcohol and the carb binge afterwards gives you and decide if its worth it.

OP posts:
mrspnut · 09/08/2011 19:57

Just to report back, scrambled eggs and ham filled me up until about 12pm (ate breakfast at 6:45).

Definitely the way to go instead of shredded wheat.

On a bad note, my teenager has been an absolute nightmare tonight so my thoughts of not drinking have gone to hell in a handcart. I'm still under my calories for the day so far though.

tinker316 · 09/08/2011 20:48

How may eggs do you have for breakfast?? Think I might give it a try- bit fed up of bran flakes all the time Sad

foreverondiet · 09/08/2011 22:21

I have a 2 egg omelette (made in non stick frying pan with a few sprays of fry light) and fat free natural yoghurt with oatbran, linseed and sometimes berries too if I have. All for under 300 cals.

RGPargy · 09/08/2011 22:52

I agree that drinking to get tipsy is pretty much the law but i dont drink during the week anymore (used to drink half a bottle of wine very night! Shock) and now limit my alcohol to 1 or 2 nights a week. I used to be uber good and not drink at all but in the summer it's really hard not to knock back a lovely pint of Berry Bulmers or Strawberry Beer...... Hmm

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 10/08/2011 19:14

Another kg gone! That's 5 in 3 weeks Smile
