And need support

This was recommended by TheHumanCatapult and is www.foodfocus.co.uk. you start by registering your weight etc and tell it how much you want to lose. It then tells you when that will be achieved, which for me was some time in 2013 Shock. You then use it day by day to record all the food eaten, and all the exercise you have done. It is working for me so far (only day 5) because:

-Iget instant results (it tells you day by day how much it calculates you have lost, you won't see it on the scales)
-I see how much I am actually eating
-I'm in control. I can see the impact of whatever I am going to eat before I actually eat it which does help the willpower somewhat!
-It's FREE

I think I will give this a try, I really need to lose some weight as I am a fat greedy pig :(

StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2011 21:06

Oh Kara :( No language like that here thank you!
Apparently you must contact your GP first if pregnant or breastfeeding

These are my reasons for losing weight, feel free to add your own:
Reasons I want to lose weight, in no particular order:

  • Health, worry about having a minor/major health scare in 10 years. Heart, joints, diabetes
  • Wedding in October, I promised myself I would
  • I can never find anyhing nice to wear, everything is a compromise
  • I have a wardrobe full of clothes I never wear but won't throw out because I'll be that size again soon
  • When I walk my thighs rub together at the top, so every pair of trousers quickly goes bobbly at the top
  • At this size I don't feel 'normal', I feel like an outsider somehow
  • I worry I sweat and smell more at this size (this is not something I have noticed in others, but am paranoid about it in me)
  • I sat on a garden chair at mum and dad's last summer and broke it
  • I now hve to consider whether something will take my weight before I sit down
  • I generally feel as though I am a successful person and can do what I put my mind to - this makes me feel like a failure
  • I am in denial about how I look. I don't have low self esteem, in general I have high self esteem. This causes me to overlook how I really look and am.
  • DH is worried about me - I can see that he is trying to tell me I am too fat for my own good without offending me
  • A frivolous one - you know those tacky tasteful sorts of events where youre getting a matching group top (think hen nights). And you get asked what size you are. Or worse, Are you S,M,L and you say L cringeing at the thought you'll probably still not squeeze into it

I'm in!

StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2011 21:33

stalking uses 30 calories per hour
If you can also stalk while holding a tin of beans in each hand, you'll use 50/hr
(Just don;'t eat the beans, whatever you do)

I have used it a couple of times before and have lost a fair bit over the last few weeks, but I've slipped out of the habit. I'll start afresh tomorrow (found a trifle for 10p in the Co-op when I popped in for bread earlier so needless to say today's a write-off!). Good luck :)

StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2011 22:06

Take your trifle and get off this thread!
We'll see you tomorrow Wink

Tried it before and found it helpful, tried it recently and just seemed to be eating things I couldn't measure far too often - think it is difficult if you aren't making all your meals (or at least buying them from the supermarket)

StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2011 22:31

like what?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2011 22:31

because soemtimes I am doing best guess. For example i had a bread roll with my soup at lunch and guessed it was about 30g

OP posts:
SouthGoingZax · 15/07/2011 22:52

Unless it was a very small one it is likely to have been 80g ish.
As a guide, a hamster weighs about 50g.

I knew that piece of information was going to come in useful one day.

StealthPolarBear · 15/07/2011 22:59

it was one of those mini ones - like the ones you get from M&S
(If that helps, which I'm sure it doesn't!)

SPB - I have my post natal check in a couple of weeks.
But I can still monitor what I eat now, and have set myself a goal of losing 1lb a week which is very feasible when breastfeeding anyway - no crash diets here!
All it says is to seek advice when breastfeeding not that you shouldn't do it.
According to the checker, I should be eating 1800 calories a day which to be honest is quite a lot for a non-bfer who wants to lose weight, so I wonder of they have factored that in?

Anyway my reasons for losing weight.

  • I currently have a limited wardrobe
  • I have back problems due to my weight.
  • I think my excess weight is probably why the sling is not so comfortable as it should be.
  • I am already in a high risk category for stroke
  • I want more energy to keep up with DS and DD
  • I don't want my dcs to be ashamed of me.
KaraStarbuckThrace · 16/07/2011 07:36

BTW Grin at a hamster as a measurement standard!

StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2011 07:37

Oh I agree with you, just thought I should be sensible and point out the advice Wink

Yes, I had forgotten that one -DS starts school this year and I don't want anyone telling him he has a fat mummy :(

Hi everyone, I am a food focus fan. I used the site after I had dc4 and lost around 2 stone while breastfeeding. I think you just need to use common sense. I made sure I ate up to the calorie allowance and did lots of walking. dc4 thrived and I didn't feel deprived!

My reasons are:
I am so tired of not having nice clothes that fit properly.
I struggle to keep up with the dcs.
I definitely DON'T want to turn into my dm Sad
I sweat loads more at this size.
Hate going swimming.
Going camping in a few weeks and my sleeping bag is a little, ahem, confining.
I want to wear jeans again - at the moment I can't find a pair that looks nice, is comfy and doesn't rub my legs (yes even the size 20's)
I want to set my dcs a good example too.

I do guess weights quite a bit but you could always have a quick weigh of stuff before eating (using weighing scales not hamsters). tbh I think a bit of guesswork is okay because I try not to get too obsessed with it.

FrumpyPumpy · 16/07/2011 08:26

I'm in... Had DC2 3 weeks ago, am within 2 lb of prepreg weight from DC1... BFing but Need to lose weight. I will only weigh myself in kg as it means nothing to me :(

need to keep up momentum

StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2011 08:36

Congratulations TW :o

KaraStarbuckThrace · 16/07/2011 08:40

Jeans, yes that i something I don't wear - I don't have any jeans except maternity ones Blush
To be fair, DD is only a month old Grin

I'd like to turn into my mum as she is a lot slimmer than me, however she works full time as a cleaner and walks 20mins to work each way! And she still has the energy to go to the gym with her DSIL Shock

StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2011 09:19

No, I have no jeans. In fact on "dress down" day at work, I wear exactly the same as I always do

Oh wow thanks for this StealthPolarBear

What a great site

I am a fan of the graph and the database, and this is FREE

Apparently I should be eating 1388 kcals a day in order to lose 1.5 lb/week No wonder I am humungernormous

I have been maintaining rather than gaining recently but am in the obese bracket so need to Do Something
My reasons (pretty much parrotting all above tbh):

  • I am sluggish and tired all the time and I don't really play with my children much
  • Most of the time I think I probably look OK and then I get a glimpse of myself in a mirror or a shop window and I look like a fat bird (especially when pushing a buggy as for some reason I am unable to do this without sticking my not inconsiderable arse out)
  • I have numerous terrible food habits that I need to break
  • My mum is more overweight than I am, has heart problems, mobility problems, she is only 62 but seems much older at times. She could help herself more but makes excuses all the time. I don't want that future for myself.
  • My children eat well and are slim and healthy. I should be too. I am a terrible example.
  • I am going on holiday in a couple of months and although it's too late to be slim by then I can make a good start and not feel so much of a great white whale on the beach, or worse get stuck in a teeny tiny plane seat
  • I would like to wear dresses but my thighs rub together when I walk :(

I have registered and logged my breakfast which was actually OK at around 300 kcals

Evenings worst time for me though.

StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2011 10:50

Yes me too. So far I seem to be distracting myself with thoughts of how little I have eaten, how much weight I am supposed to have lost iyswim. Am worried about once the novelty of that wears off but am hoping I can up my calories a bit to alllow myself some treats if I need to. As I said before, I'm not good with moderation - it's all or nothing with me

OP posts:
FourThousandHoles · 16/07/2011 12:07

I think I would do well to cut out the booze. I rarely drink to excess but will have a glass of wine or a vod&coke most evenings and then I get the munchies. Alcohol is empty calories in itself of course so I'd be saving myself a couple of hundred a day by sticking to cups of tea.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 16/07/2011 15:33

SPB - yeah I am all or nothing. I find unless I have a firm plan and use a food diary I find myself unable to stick to a diet.
I did SW a few years ago and lost 3.5 stone before I got married, but then piled it all back on, mainly when pg with ds and the more afterwards. Tried SW again but found it impossible to get to classes with ds and I needed the classes to keep me going.
I do feel very preoccupied with food today and just feeling hungry all day! HAve had just under 1200 calories today, but only planning on a light tea.
I do have lots of fruit to snack on as well and have been drinking lots of redbush tea and coffee as well.
