You definitely don't want to know how to make it: it consists of 1/4 lb butter, 2lb caster sugar, cup of milk and a whole tin of condensed milk....... and it is very more-ish.

You're only supposed to eat a small squares of it at a time..... BlushBlush

I sent some down to Piste and she and her daugher finished the lot. She didn't even keep any for her dh who was away at the time. Hmm

Smalline · 17/08/2011 08:52

...and knowing my luck, the kids won't like it and I will end up eating the whole lot.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/08/2011 09:25

what is this tablet one speaks of?

butter/sugar/milk/condensed

yummy

prettybird · 17/08/2011 09:51

Tis a Scottish speciality - a cross between toffee and fudge and dreadful for the teeth and/or waistline but very very yummy Wink

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/08/2011 17:52

love toffee but hate fudge

bebejones · 17/08/2011 20:55

Other way for me, LOVE fudge but not so fond of toffee (unless it's Thorntons Mint toffee )

Might give tablet a go for Xmas pressies...what kind of pan do you use to make it in Pretty? (I wrecked one of my Le Crueset making fudge last year! :()

Have been a very good girl today, and.......The Shred arrived!! :o

prettybird · 17/08/2011 23:33

Am I going to have to send out samples to all the Super Sizzlers Slinking Sylphlike into Summer? HmmGrin Does seem a bit ironic for a Slimming Support group Wink

Bebe -: it took me 10 batches to be confident I could make it properly.

IIRC....
Batch 1: Seized
Batch 2: Too soft
Batch 3: OK-ish
Batch 4: Too soft
Batch 5: Granular
Batch 6: Ok but a bit soft
Batch 7: Far too soft
Batch 8: OK - too soft but OK enough to sell at out rugby cake baking stall
Batch 9: Good
Batch 10: Good
Batch 11: Good
Batch 12: Good

It was from Batch 9 onwards that I used the tablet recipe that my mum had hand-written down and had then written against it "The Best". My dad scanned it and sent it to me. Even then, I've had to annotate it slightly.

Tablet is not hard or chewy like toffee - but it is not soft like fudge. It is sort of crisp yet melt in the mouth at the same time.

Perhaps Piste as a non-Scot who has tried it could describe it better than me.

Bebe - I use a large le Creuset casserole dish. I've made it in an enamel pan (that's the photo in fb) but you really need a heavier based pan, otherwise you have to be really careful about stirring well the whole time and even then you'll still get wee bits catching, even on a tiny gas ring. Making tablet involves about half an hour of stirring, followed by c.10 minutes of beating. It's good for strengthening in my case my left your arm!

bebejones · 18/08/2011 10:01

Don't think I am willing to sacrifice another Le Crueset!! Would it work in my maslin? It's heavy bottomed! (bit like me Wink Grin)

prettybird · 18/08/2011 10:15

Anything heavy bottomed would work - but it needs to be realtively big as it expands while it is boiling. If anything, it's cleaned out the bottom of my (white) Le Creuset pan as there had been some staining in it. I just shoved it in the dishwasher after I've finished scraping out the left-overs

If you ask very nicely I'll pass on my secret recipe! :) Actually, the basic recipe is fairly consistent and you can find on the internet - but there is a sublt variation in the way mum made it which seems to make it more fail-proof.

bebejones · 18/08/2011 10:52

Ooooh yes, pretty pretty please Pretty! :)

Don't have a dishwasher (well, not one plumbed in...long story!) so can't stick pans in! Had to scrub it to within an inch of it's life!! :( Fudge is a bugger to make & not burn...I have a halogen hob which is crap & doesn't help I'm sure!

prettybird · 18/08/2011 11:30

I've sent it to you via fb - let me know if it arrives.

Piste - I think you are going to win the competition! WinkGrin

bebejones · 18/08/2011 13:16

I have received it & as I said in my reply I shall not be making it until I have won the competition & beaten that pesky Piste!!! :o

prettybird · 18/08/2011 13:25

Piste - I did my best for you! Wink Gave away my secret family recipe......

Bebe : gawon, gawon, gawon. You know you want to Grin Piste is away gorging herslef on holiday - you've got plenty of time to repair any damage......... HmmHmm

bebejones · 18/08/2011 13:45

Thought you were supposed to be being impartial!!!

Sabotage!!! I am shocked! Shock Wink

Going to remain strong...will at least wait til Piste is back & I know how she is doing how much of a lead I have!! :o

GettinTrimmer · 18/08/2011 16:46

I hope to sts on Monday at least Blush but could still win as Pretty is sidetracked by her tablet which sounds gorgeous.

This is the first year I have found it very difficult to entertain my dc together, one doesn't want to do what the other wants to do and I felt like hitting the gin earlier on and it was only 10am!

prettybird · 18/08/2011 17:05

I'm going to have to hide the tablet from me BlushBlush

prettybird · 19/08/2011 10:45

Damn that tablet

STS :(

Smalline · 19/08/2011 13:11

Oh what a shame Pretty Grin

No honestly, I am expecting the same tomorrow if I am lucky, I'm putting it down to lack of rushing around everywhere, and we've still got two more weeks of it.

prettybird · 19/08/2011 13:15

I can feel your sympathy Smalline! Wink

Ds started back at school on Wednesday so I can now do th Shred andd/or go for a run during the day, so things should get better provided I don't make any more tablet Grin

bebejones · 19/08/2011 13:53

:( Pretty...but that confirms that I will not be making tablet until I have reached goal. Wink I shall use it as my dangly carrot!! :o

2 more weeks til DD goes back to pre-school. I love her dearly, but toddlers are hard work & I need some space. The constant reasoning & justification is exhausting!! I'm getting snappy & she is grumpy & wingey as a result. We will get along alot better when she has activities to do again! (Good grief, if it's like this now I am dreading her teenage years!! Confused)

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/08/2011 21:33

i would love to try this tablet pretty - pretty please :)

i sts but as went glamping and ate bacon butties and drunk almost 2 bottles of baileys im very happy with that - let alone the wine i drunk on wednesday night .....................

bebejones · 20/08/2011 16:51

Having a bad diet day. Hoping that all the effort I've pit in this week will be enough to stop me gaining on Monday! My poor puss cat is very poorly and at the vets, I'm feeling quite emotional and stressed Sad

Smalline · 20/08/2011 17:26

Have good news and bad news!

Bad news (although I think a couple of ladies will be very pleased) I have put on 2lbs this weekAngry

Good news, have found the house of our dreams, waiting to hear if vendor accepts our offer, have to wait until Monday now.

Smalline · 20/08/2011 18:35

Sorry to hear about your cat bebe, hope you both feel better soonSmile

GettinTrimmer · 20/08/2011 20:50

Hi all, well done on sts Blondes, my niece is doing glamping at the V festival so I hear with full make up on every day!

We are thinking of going away for 2 nights as dh off work, but the weather looks ropey towards the end of next week and dh also reckons our tent has been chewed by rats. Urrrrgh.

bebe sorry to hear about your puss cat, I hope he will be alright. Are they keeping him in overnight?

smalline so easily done gaining during holiday time. I am hoping to sts on Monday. So with your 2lb gain we are neck and neck... but at this rate until September it will be a competition to see who can sts.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you, hope vendor accepts.

Pretty well done on sts.

Today I had a boiled egg for breakfast, rye bread low fat cheese/egg sandwich & banana for lunch, tea was jacket spud, salmon and salad, then digestive biscuits and some superb deli cheese
