I read about the website, myfitnesspal.com on MN. Am truly desperate to stop the ever rising weight gain - I have just topped my full term pregnancy weightSad. I've never really been a dieter, or even believed in diets, but I Have To Do Something. Would love to do it with some other Mumsnetters - anyone interested in joining me?

All the weight loss threads seem so bloated, if you'll pardon the metaphor. I'm intimidated by 537 messages, or 219 messages. Feel I cant be arsed to read through all that and I will never be part of the club if I dont read the history. Advice please?

I had one of those pizzas, they are fine..... went with my work colleague on first day back from work after maternity leave, first day of my diet!!! If I go back will probably ask them to skip the cheese thought probably would reduce it futher.

redderthanred · 20/05/2011 19:44

ah - seems they are good then. Most of the ' healthy' ones have got light cheese on them. ill see. i might eay half or something.

im home. ive eaten and have netted a grand total of 520 cals for the day. fecking stupid. but i kind of feel a bit sick now, from being so hungry and then shovelling food down so quickly.

anyone on facebook?
( if anyone fancies it?)

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 20/05/2011 20:53

I'm on FB but I've just read the cyber stalking thread Confused so you'll have to pm your name first Grin

redderthanred · 20/05/2011 22:17

have pm'ed you.

Well, my crap lunchness has been turned around

tescos men just delivered my shopping and because lots of fruit, expensive fruit like strawberries, blackberries, raspberries.. and salad stuff and mince was out of date tomorrow ( and they just delivered it) i said i didnt want it and they said ok, then when i went to sign they said i could have it for FREE!!!! and they wold just refund it, but not to tell anyone!!!

yay!!!! how good is THAT!!!

RGPargy · 20/05/2011 22:47

I'm up for a meet up! If it's going to be in September when Gilbonzo is back in the UK then it'll give me time to lose a pound or two lol.

Haven't read the FB stalking thread - will also PM you, red.

I've also had the same sort of thing but with Ocado, red. How did you know it was almost out of date so quickly? Did you make him wait at the door while you checked? lol! Good that you got it for nothing tho, although with Ocado it was only with a pack of 6 finger rolls that they gave me as a substitute for paninis. Hmm Not quite sure how on earth a finger roll is like a panini.....

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 21/05/2011 06:46

I've added you redder. Pm me RG and I'll whack yo on there too.

Free shopping sounds like a dream come true. The only thing they deliver out here is frozen food and peas just don't do it for me!

I'm off for a BBQ at a friend's today but as she's an MFPer I'm hoping it will be good stuff. I've allowed for one burger (no bun) and loads of salad......fingers crossed.

redderthanred · 21/05/2011 08:41

RG - with tesco they tell you when you deliver it, things that have a shorted shelf life than they would like. - haha. im SO not organised enough to check myself. So i just said i didnt really want them if they were out of date today when they were only delivered late last night. So they said they would return them.. and then just said i could have them for free :)

Im totally assuming this has nothing to do with last weeks tesco man incident, when instead of saying ' lovely, thanks' as he went i actually told him i loved him, thanks!!

mortifying!!!!!

gibs - yay! makes it So much easier if someone else is dieting too.

just jumped on the scales. 1lb down since tuesday :) and on target for a 2lb loss.

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 21/05/2011 15:40

Where'd everybody go?

Anyway, I was really good at the BBQ. I had 1 burger which I cut in half. I had half in half a bun and the other half plain and heaps of salad. I did spend the rest of the afternoon wanting a chocolate gateau but luckily there wasn't one available so I went without. I'm not sure why I got so fixated on chocolate gateau as the last time I ate one was about 4 billion years ago but hey ho, I'm an odd one.

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 21/05/2011 15:43

Oh, and redder that made me lol Grin

Congrats on the weight loss. I had a cheeky stand on the broken scales and they are showing a loss but I can't trust them because they are very temperamental and have been known to add up to 10kg when they're having a bad day. Anyway, fingers crossed for a good result on Monday.

foreverondiet · 21/05/2011 22:24

red wow that was good with tesco. I never check when they are there but a few times have called up once the bloke has gone and they are very good about refunding stuff.

I have been buying frozen berries as cheaper - I think tesco does 3 for 2 in frozen summer fruits. I find that if I take out of freezer night before just nice in yoghurt for breakfast. Don't even buy fruit yoghurts anymore, just add the defrosted summer fruits to natural yoghurt.

On Friday so many people commented on how I look - both in gym and at school, nice to get compliments like that.

Had a relaxing day today, read a lot of the 4 hour body (DH bought it). Very interesting.... maybe not worth buying but worth trying to get from a library. The case study I found the most interesting was the woman who lost 7 stone in 12 weeks, and the secret was weight lifting. The diet he recommends though is totally extreme - basically consists only of meat, fish, eggs, legumes, vegetables and cottage cheese (no other dairy). He does allow a cheat day every week though but still I think quite strict.

Ate rather too many of my biscuits today, and DH had a go at me for baking as he ate too many too, says I am not allowed to do more baking nor should I make him carbs for dinner (have been making him rice or pasta to go with what I eat, I haven't been eating the rice or pasta though). He has gone out for a run and has been using the weights I bought for shred.... and has joined my gym!

Am happy to see you on facebook - search for by my real name (from MFP) - its the same photo (as MFP) so would be easy to find me - where in the UK are you all - I am in London.

RGPargy · 21/05/2011 23:28

Red - that cracked me up with the Tesco man!! I had to tell DP about it and even he cracked up! :o Well done on the sneaky loss!

Forever - well done on the compliments! Great isn't it!! People have also been saying that i look like i've lost weight lately but the scales haven't budged! Perhaps i am just changing shape......

Gilbonzo - well done on showing restraint at the BBQ! I bet you are glad there was no gateaux there tho. I dont think i would have been able to resist! Is it normal to have a gateaux at such events?

Haven't done too much today. Went to body pump this morning and then put the world to rights with my friend after that. Tomorrow i am gyming again. I normally just do combat on a sunday but i am thinking of nipping into the step class first and then doing combat. I think DP also wants to go bike riding tomorrow afternoon so it could be a full on day of exercise!! Hmm

Forever - i am rubbish at knowing who's who if they have different names Blush If you want to add me on FB, please feel free to PM me with your name!! Blush Blush

I'm off to bed now. Cant stop yawning!! See you all in the morning. Sleep well! :o

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 22/05/2011 06:12

Gateau (I'm spelling that the French way aren't I?? Oh crap, I'm turning into one of.....them!!!!) is not normal at a BBQ, it was just one of my random cravings. Since I've stopped smoking (2 months - yay!!!!!) I think of a food and then get fixated on it. It's like my brain needs to be denying my body something at all times..........I should probably check myself into one of those lovely padded rooms......especially as I just did my bike ride at 6:30am on a Sunday!

Forever, fantastic on the compliments!

redderthanred · 22/05/2011 09:52

Gibs - you did really well and i cant believe you are stopping smoking at the same time, seriously, kudos to you :)

Forever - sounds like your Dh has been a bit inspired by your weight loss. though baking must surely be allowed some times?

RG- enjoy your day of exercise!

well. last night was a disaster food wise. The INTENTIONS were there. but i failed :) totally!!! Off i went to with my NORMAL sized bag of malteasers, i even took a bottle of water as the capri sun i was going to take has 88 bloody cals in it!!!! 88 cals in a fecking juice pouch. SHOCKING! so. i took water.
I did well in pizza express. The whole table ordered a selection of starters and i had ONE doughball. and def deserve a round of applause for that. I had my lovely pizza with the middle cut out and filled with salad ( and it was lush) but i accidentally had an aspall to drink ( lovely local cider... not like white lightning type stuff) totally gave in and just thought why the hell not. Then i had another. And another.
3 ciders later and we walked to the cinema. My little bag of malteasers in my bag still.
Everyone was all over the pick and mix.
In my slightly tipsy state my will caved and i went running about with that little scoop joyfulling filling the bag up. THEN i opened the normal sized malteasers bag and tipped that into my bag too!! LOL and ate the lot!!!!
lol
So there i sat, in the cinema, bit tipsy, scoffing crappy sweets and perving over capt jack :)

it was worth it!!

this morning i had an upset stomach. urgh. and have come to work ( extra hours so i can leave early for camping friday) with an apple and some raspberries by means of compensation.

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 22/05/2011 12:41

Ooooo your tale of debauchery is making me drool! Was the film good though? (Read: was Jonny make-your-pants-damp fabulous?)

I'm doing everything I can to get a loss tomorrow. I did the bike ride at 6:30am, then went for a walk with the kids, then threw them into their rooms after lunch so I could do the Tracy Anderson arms workout, then the abs workout and then the arms again. I've eaten low fat fromage frais for breakfast, salad for lunch, a couple of rice cakes for a snack and I'm having roast chicken and 4000 different types of veg for dinner. I've also burnt twice the number of calories I was aiming for this week so there bloody wants to be a change Angry

foreverondiet · 22/05/2011 13:17

red ok to have a night off, just be more careful today, sounds like it was all worth it! I'm also being more careful today due to all the biscuits and rubbish I ate yesterday...

foreverondiet · 22/05/2011 13:39

red re: DH. His work trousers were getting too tight (32 inch) and he did not want to buy more, so joined the gym as new years resolution, has been going plus he's doing running as well (he loves the 4 hour body book I mentioned) - he did the rather strict diet advocated and lost the half stone he needed to in 2 weeks! So he doesn't want to put the weight back (he has put some of it on though in additional muscles by following the advice in the book but trousers still fit which to him is the most important rather than actual weight.

foreverondiet · 22/05/2011 21:30

Well I finally swam in my wetsuit - only have 2 weeks until triathlon so about time! Went to Hampstead ladies pond and managed 8 lengths (100m a length), horrible murky and green. Its about 25 mins drive, and free parking and open until 8.30pm so really should have been before now!

I would say cold, but with the wetsuit I didn't feel cold at all! All the other woman wearing wetsuits were also training for triathlons - everyone else wearing swimming costumes (water 16c).

RGPargy · 22/05/2011 23:27

Gilbonzo - well done on giving up smoking too! That's awesome! I know what you mean about always needed to deprive the body of something or other! We all have our vices and it seems mine are all bad ones! Good luck for a loss tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you! Sounds like you really earnt one with all that exercise!

Red - oooo i love those pizzas with the salad in the middle! Well done on your dough ball restraint too. That's serious willpower! I'd be totally the same tho after having a few Aspalls! They are lovely aren't they! Suffolk cider, i believe. DP and I discovered them when we were on holiday last year in a little cottage in the Suffolk countryside. Very delicious! I have to admit that i would have been terrible at resisting pick n' mix too, although i would have been tempted to sneak in my own cheaper one - they charge so much in those places! So how was Cap'n Jack Sparrow?? worth going to see?

Forever - wow, a trialthon!! I wouldn't mind doing one of those, but without the running, swimming and maybe the cycling too..... Hmm Wink

I didn't end up going to the gym today after all. I had a bit of a hangover headache this morning and just couldn't get my backside into gear. So in the end DP and I whisked DD off to her grandparents for the afternoon so that DP and I could go on a long bike trek. We were out for just over 2 hours and racked up 12 miles cross country. it's not a great amount of mileage but it is only the fourth time i've been on my bike and i've not ridden one in about 20 years!! They are soooo different from exercise bikes at the gym so deffo take getting used to again! Anyway, i managed to burn off a whacking 823 calories on that bike ride!! :o :o

Right, best get some sleep i suppose! Pump tomorrow morning at the gym!

N'night everone! :o

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 23/05/2011 07:16

I'm kind of at the point where I've had enough. I went for my bike ride this morning, came back and got on the WiiFit to weigh myself.

Fucking +0.3kg on last week.

What the fuck is going on??? I'm really really not cheating. I'll admit to having some chocolate or an ice cream in the evening but I save calories through the day so they fit into my allowance. I don't eat my exercise cals and I'm doing more exercise than ever before. Dh was gobsmacked when I told him as he thinks there is a massive difference on my stomach and my clothes are fitting better. What makes it harder to deal with is that I've got a friend doing MFP and she keep cheating and eating shit but she's losing weight - grrrrrr.

I'm going to cut out all crap - no treats or anything. I really don't believe that is a sustainable way of losing weight but I need to see some difference. I'm also going to go to the doctor and see what advice he can give me. I'll print off some pages from MFP so he can see what I'm eating and go from there.

Sorry to whinge and go on about me but I'm so upset this morning and I keep crying because it's just so bloody unfair.

That's for all the congrats on not smoking. That was a massive achievement for me. I've smoked since I was 14, given up for each pregnancy but started again as soon as I left hospital. I never thought I'd be able to stop but something 'clicked' one day and it was actually quite easy.

Right, I'm off to hack my boobs off with a knife - that should make a difference on the bloody scales.

redderthanred · 23/05/2011 07:35

what! bloody hell - if i were you i woluld be gutted, are you sure its not your dodgy scales? You could open your food diary and we could have a look too?

i did some reading last week, and though it takes AGES to build a pound of muscle, if you suddenly start doing lots and lots of exercise ( as you are doing) the muscles hold onto water to repair.... which might be contributing? ( and probably expalins why my loss was slower when i was shredding)

rg- capt jack was actually a bit crap. i wouldnt go expecting to see anything even mildly good. but if you are just going for a good perv its maybe worth it.. but proabably better to watch a dvd really :) Yes, aspalls is made in suffolk :) where i live. Tis very very nice!

Forever - in a POND??????

well. i have learnt a lesson. If you only indend to eat one packet of malteasers, it is very very silly indeed to buy a 3 pack!!!
:)
I ate them ALL!!!
Yesterday was a weird eating day - with almost half my daily cals coming from malteasers!!! I still managed to stay under cal allowance, and didnt eat any exercise cals.. so hopefully limited any damage, but its not good to have half your daily cals coming from chocolate is it... i wasnt even hungry when i ate them. it was just a full on craving. I waited a while then ate half a pack. Then half and hour later ate the other half. Then two hours later ate the other packet!!!!

redderthanred · 23/05/2011 07:52

the water/muscle repair thing might also be why you are losing inches when you exercise, but not lbs.

also - did you say youi have pcos too? I have found, even if i stick within my 1200 goal and dont eat any exercise cals, that if i eat cabs then i dont lose. I HAVE to cut the carbs to maybe once or twice a week and limit fruit. Basically ban sugar as much as i can.

GilbonzoTheSecretPsychoDuck · 23/05/2011 08:18

right, I've out my food diary to friends only. If you go back a month it looks awful but that's because it was before I changed from lightly active to sedentary.

I do have PCOS and I once lost loads of weight by cutting out carbs. I went to see a specialist who told me that I had to eat a small portion of carbs each day in order for my body to learn to deal with them. He said that as I don't have cysts any more, just the left over symptoms, I have to try to get my body back to accepting them. I put on weight doing this so I cut them all out again. I then got really ill which led to my gallbladder coming out and as you know, I couldn't eat carbs after that. My doctor got really worried about how little I was eating so he sent me back to the surgeon who told me that I had to eat a little bit of everything so this is what I've been doing. I did manage to lose weight (2 stone since Sept 2010) eating small portions of rice, pasta, etc but this last month it's just stopped. I said to dh this morning that I'm going to go back to eating no carbs for a while and see if it helps but I just worry that it's not maintainable for life and, as has happened before, as soon as I lose weight and then reintroduce carbs I will whack it all back on again.

I'm definitely going to go back to the doctor and get his advice but they do things very differently over here so it may not correspond to what is done in England. I find some medical opinions over here are a huge improvement on the UK and some are very Hmm so I'll see what he says and choose who to believe.

redderthanred · 23/05/2011 09:07

ah- so you have been losing weight since sept then...??? 2 stone is lots :)
could it not just be a plateau?

redderthanred · 23/05/2011 09:25

hmmm. ok.

Ive had a quick look.
No carbs would be unsubstainable - i agree. im eating some. But the ones im eating arent white, processed ones. They are ones naturally found in veg and things.. so low carb as opposed to no carb.

Also - ive been trying to follow ' clean eating' sort of thing, ie - if your grandmother wouldnt recognise it - dont eat it ( obviously this does not apply to malteasers!!!) lol. But what i mean is, cutting out anything thats processed. I read something tha said ; if it comes in a box, then it probably should stay in a box'
So - 99.9% of the time im eating really simply - bar the malteasers!

I know there is the argument that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie - BUT it has recently been proven ( and hence the whole weight watchers change in philosophy) that the way our bodies deal with different types of calories varies emensley.

The gallbladder problem is apparently really common with PCOS - more to do with insulin resistance.... and a little of everything could maybe mean one portion of carbs ( like rice or whatever) in a week rather than once or twice or even 3 times a day.

i dont know - thats just what i think, dont hate me!! lol. I can see a fair bit of 'processed' stuff. so id cut that out and lower the carbs and sugar.

But if you have lost 2 stone since sept you are doing well :) really. thats alot of weight!

foreverondiet · 23/05/2011 09:28

gil I have pcos too, got pregnant with DD after loosing weight (was only about 10 stone when I started the diet so wasn't really overweight) and following very strict low GI diet (from Colette Harris PCOS diet book) - and my story is mentioned in the PCOS and your fertility book.

Very frustrating not to loose, but its unlikely you have gained fat. Either you are retaining water, or building muscle. Do not focus on weight, its a blunt tool, if you need to focus on a number choose either body fat% or waist measurement.

I have lost weight this time by cutting out carbs - and got the best weight loss in the weeks I was doing dukan strictly (ie no treats even if small calorie wise) - I found I reached plateau even on 1200 when I was having small treats.

How about eating legumes for your carbs - they are low GI and do contain carbs (and protein) but they are slow releasing carbs. If you fancy following an extreme diet (that does include carbs) I suggest you try Tim Feriss's slow carb diet. He basically allows meat, fish, legumes, eggs, vegetables and cottage cheese. And you can eat what you want one day a week. (see 4 hour body). He doesn't allow other dairy due to milk sugar and impact on insulin.

red yes pond. There is a lifeguard / changing rooms / showers etc. But yes green and murky, with ducks and sticks / twigs! The swim leg of triathlon is in a pond so needed to practise! There are women who swim there all year round!
