2 stone to lose - GL and couch - 5km

mamasunshine · 18/03/2011 09:51

Ok so I'm now desperate to lose 2 stone. Starting to feel motivated so have bought Holford's GL diet book (just started reading). Makes a lot of sense. I'm also going to start running with the couch - 5km on Bupa website. Going to start getting into motivated mode over the weekend...with 1st run Saturday morning! Buying a set of scales this afternoon, but think I'm about 11 stone at 5ft4. Going to do this slowly though, so only looking at 1lb a week weightloss, an extra 1lb here and there would be an excellent bonus Grin

Would anyone care to join me for motivation/to keep me on the straight and narrow?! Also to share any tasty recipes/food/snack ideas etc!

Will weigh-in on a Saturday Smile

START WEIGHTS:

deedee321 - 11st 1lb
Jobi1 - ?st 2lb
mamasunshine - 11st - 37.7%
ZZMum - 12st 1lb - 40%

WEEK 1 WEIGHT LOSS:

Jobi1 - - 4lbs = ? 12lbs
mamasunshine - +2lbs???????? = 11st 2lb - 34.7%
ZZMum - + 5lbs = 12st 6lbs

I think I weighed in heavy last week, so the 4lb loss is a fluke I think. I've been really bad all weekend and am peed off with myself, so I need to kick myself up the bum. I had been tracking quite well but not for past few days, going to start again tomorrow. Back on the wagon. The first week of training for 5k went well, I found it very doable. The only downside is I've got a dodgy knee and its hurting, plus I'm a bit chesty and sore throaty thanks to 3 year olds yackky germs. Week 2 starts tonight, so got to get on with it I think. On a really high note, I've already raised £85 sponsorship for race for life, so I'm really chuffed with that :o)

As for weight gains, especially the 5lber, I reckon that's a blip and will fall off this week, so keep your chin up! xx

deedee321 · 28/03/2011 19:18

MamaSunshine, could not repress a giggle, that is exactly what I foresaw happening to me, thus next week's start date! Faulty scales I say...!!

deedee321 · 28/03/2011 21:44

Sorry, just saw that ZZ and Jobi had posted too, for some reason didn't see your before as on new page. ZZ do agree will be a blip -maybe make sure you weigh yourself at similar time of day/same clothing (or starkers!!)
Just in from third run, doing 2 mins running, 1 walking. Feel am being spoilsport not weighing when you all have so off to do it now (before eating the curry DH is cooking for our late tea!! What hope do I have??)
Good news for you Jobi, am jealous!

deedee321 · 28/03/2011 21:48

Grrrrrr, 11 stone 3.
You gotta laugh.....

ZZMum · 31/03/2011 09:56

So ladies how are we doing?

I have failed miserably to run anything other than a couple of baths so far this week and so am off to the gym tonight to start again - good news is that the blip weight gain seems to be coming off - today was 4lb down on the scary gain - am trying to be good and just eat protein for a few days to get back to the orginal starting point!

how is every one else?

deedee321 · 31/03/2011 18:01

At least your weight is back where you started ZZ - I have kept to my schedule and done my 4th run, for half an hour this time, just weighed myself and am still 11,3. Eek. I did have a banana and toffee muffin yesterday and a pancake and choccie biccie today. But am on maternity leave! Aren't cakes obligatory??

Jobi1 · 02/04/2011 12:34

Weighed in early this week as its Mother's Day tomorrow and I'm planning on having a day off from the diet Smile

This week has gone ok, Couch to 5k Week 2 complete, so am very pleased about that. Diet has been a little hit and miss but nothing too bad. I'm worried my weigh in today is a blip so will check again in the morning.

Good luck everyone xx

12 stones exactly!! woooohoooo -

littledolly · 03/04/2011 08:31

Hi all

Is is OK if I join too?? I have 2 stone to loose (am currently 12st 2lbs). I've been on and off with Slimming World for a year now and am 2lbs heavier than when I started! I've thought alot about things in recent days and I think I need to get out of the diet mentality and just focus on healthy eating and portion contol, along with upping my exercise. I've ordered the GI eating plan from Amazon, so hope it arrives soon.

I go off and on to the gym, and when I was there on Friday, I ran 3km in 20 mins on the treadmill. However, ideally I would like to be able to run in the fresh air, but can barely run the length of myself outside of the gym! I know people say it's a totall different kind of running, but being able to just stick my trainers on and go for a run from the house. I've downloaded the Couch to 5K app so have no excuse now. I just need to find somewhere suitable for running, as there is no park or anything near me.

Am hoping this thread will keep me motivated. To get me started, would some of you mind posting the kind of things you eat for lunch and dinner? I am having porridge for breakfast at the moment (boiled eggs and wholemeal toast at weekends), so I think that is OK. I just need some ideas for other meals, especially lunches I can take to work.

Wish me luck........Smile

deedee321 · 03/04/2011 19:04

Welcome littledoll, to the thread where we put on weight by exercising!! No, only joking, ZZ is doing great and we will hopefully all follow. My friend who is training to become a personal trainer has explained it to me, though not sure i fully got it. Something about initially amassing new muscle so temporary weight gain is to be expected, then eventually your resting metabolism rate increases (might not have remembered it entirely accurately).
Anyway, I have now completed 2 weeks of the programme and remain at 11,3 which is 2 pounds heavier than when I started! But I'm feeling great, so that's a bonus!
I'm not limiting my food, hoping to tone up on exercise alone as am just 12 weeks post-birth and am breastfeeding. However, trying not to be awful. My brekkies and lunches are ok I think, it is later in the day I start searching out treats :).
Brek: cereal, toast and marmalade, fresh juice, cup if tea.
Lunch: sandwich and fruit or soup and roll.
Then I go out for coffee and cake and ruin it :).

Jobi1 · 05/04/2011 09:48

Hi littledolly and welcome Smile

Brekkie sounds good, a simple sandwich or soup for lunch and smallish normal dinners are fine. Things to limit are high fat foods like cheese, mayo, cake, biscuits etc, and high cal killers like wine. As long as you're eating decent size portions that's ok Smile And I usually try and squeeze in wine within calorie allowance a couple of days a week and one day a week all bets are off!!

As far as I know in simple terns, the larger you are the higher your resting metabolism. Which is why larger people and men in general need more calories just to maintain their weight. So I would think your resting metabolic rate is likely to be roughly around 1800 - 2000 cals per day. In order to lose weight you need to create a defecit of 3500 for each 1lb. So if you eat around 1800 cals a day and do no exercise you won't lose weight. If you can limit your cals to around 1200-1600 per day and exercise maybe 3 times a week, you will lose 1-2lbs each week. It is that simple in my opinion. Muscle does burn more calories than fat and is also smaller in size weight by weight because it is denser tissue, so that's the other advantage of exercise!

Anyway, I'm delighted that I've hung on to last week's 2lb weight loss despite being a bit piggy on Mother's Day! I've also just started Week 3 of Couch to 5k and its going well!

Onwards and downwards! xx

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 05/04/2011 13:03

can I please join? I am on day 2 of couch to 5k, and i am suffering even just alternating walking and running. i have done NO exercise since i was pg with dd1 5 years ago Shock, and my main motivation is to get healthier.
am currently 12st3, down from 12st6 last week. dd2 is now 5mo, and I think the babyweight excuse is losing credibility. I would like to be 10st7, will settle for 11st. I am not counting calories or low carbing or anything, but have cut out snacks between meals, and wine. and we have a new whole family rule of sweet treats only on Saturdays and Sundays.

tiredemma · 05/04/2011 14:25

Can I join too?

Officially heaviest I have ever been (even heavier thanwhen I was pregnant).
Im 4'11" and 10st 1lb.
I did couch to 5k last summer and was running 5k 3x per week. I lost very little weight though but now realise that I really have to change my whole attitude to food. I love pasta's, rice, potatoes, chocolate, pastries, white bread- in other words all stodgy food that just wont shift.

I am determined to lose weight and get fit again.

so here I am today
10 st 1lb- i am aiming for 2lb loss by next week.

Hope I can join you?

Jobi1 · 05/04/2011 15:33

Welcome CharlotteBronteSaurus (love the name!) and tiredemma, this thread is getting busy!! Grin

deedee321 · 05/04/2011 19:00

Welcome to both of you, fantastic! Charlotte, have seem you on other threads and always liked your name, hee!

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 07/04/2011 08:22

thanks for the welcome Smile
I'm sure you guys already know about it, but I just found the NHS c25k podcasts - where the woman tells you when it's time to walk/run. Have downloaded it, and so won't be faffing around squinting at the clock on my ipod today.

Jobi1 · 07/04/2011 20:16

Ooh yes that's what I've been doing with a friend 3 times a week and its FAB! I really like it, got session 3 of week 3 tomorrow and so far its been really doable. Except for at end of pregnancies, I am at my fattest and unfittest and am finding it hard work but not impossible, and also very motivating Grin

I have also signed up for Race for Life in June and raised £170 already, which I'm made up about! I think after that I might sign up for a 10k in October to keep the momentum going.

So far so good Smile

Jobi1 · 10/04/2011 19:27

Where is everybody? Finished Week 3 of C25k on friday, slightly dreading week 4! Down another 1lb yesterday morning, will do the proper list when on laptop as can't work it out on phone. So half a stone down so far which I'm well chuffed with. Hopefully a weekend of bbqs & a few vinos hasn't ruined it!

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 10/04/2011 19:59

I am now on week 2, and have done something horrid to my knees. TBH i think it's the shock of not having done any high impact exercise for 5 years, rather than actual injuries, so am trying to plough on. am still really struggling generally, although my run route is quite hilly and off-road in parts which doesn't help.
12st1lb - another 2lb off! 5lb total loss. Can now get my pre-latest-pregnancy jeans over my thighs. maybe be the end of the month they will fasten again Wink. (they are a size 16 though, so that's not such a huge achievement)

Jobi1 · 10/04/2011 22:22

I know how you feel, I've got a problem knee but its not too bad. Make sure you have a rest day between runs and maybe take anti inflamms if suffering. In terms of route, is there any chance you could drive to a better one? We drive to the prom a mile or so away because we live at the top of a hill! Anyway, well done on the loss!

ZZMum · 11/04/2011 10:50

Morning!
I fell off the wagon again - not sure I was ever on it - getting to be very close to my race now so need to focus .. just been to the gym and will weight myself later - I find it so hard to be in a routine .. but I did treat self to personal shopper this week which was fab and did make me realise that if Ilost a stone or so I could look so much better than I do now - so I am hoping that will motivate me ..

Think I still weigh about 12 stone - going away this week so worried about prospect of a week of hotel food - will take running stuff and hope for a gym!

Catch up soon - sounds like every one doing well!

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 11/04/2011 12:34

deedee321 · 11/04/2011 19:45

I am not doing well at all!! I am still the same weight, which is 2 lbs heavier than before I started! Can't decide whether to be inspired or depressed by everyone else's weight loss, hee hee! Well done you girls, am extremely jealous. I don't deserve to have lost any this week however as DH been on night shift and coordinating runs around night shift, baby and 3 year old has just not happened this week. Managed to get out for a run today as had got to the point if I didn't get out and do it I might have stopped...am back on board again, a nudge now and then might be needed!!

tiredemma · 11/04/2011 23:45

weighed myself 1 day early (couldnt wait!!)

10st 1lb last week
9st 12lb today
