New Thread for Lo Carbers/non-carbers, etc

WhereamI · 07/02/2011 16:31

Old lo-carb thread was 'too big' and wouldn't let me post this. It's for a almond meal pancake - I find one is really filling (I have it with total yoghurt and blueberries) and leave the mix in the fridge to have another next day.

Ingredients:
?1 cup almond flour
?2 eggs
?1/4 cup water (for puffier pancakes, you can use sparkling water)
?2 T oil
?1/4 teaspoon salt
?1 T sweetener
Preparation:
Mix ingredients together and cook as you would other pancakes. I like to use a nonstick pan with a little oil. The only real difference is that they won't "bubble" on top the same way as regular pancakes. Flip them when the underside is brown.

Yield: Six 4-inch pancakes

Nutritional Information: Each pancake has 1 gram effective carbohydrate, plus 2 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, and 155 calories.

I made myself loads of salt and pepper squis at lunchtime, but I barely ate any. Shock I'm peckish now though. I'm going to hit the cheese too I think.

Have just made some parmesan/cheddar crisps - added black pepper and chilli powder, and they were lovely!

We're having fillet steak (special treat!), celeriac dauphinoise (for me), spinach with garlic butter and chips (for DH and DS2).

I've got a Nigella's Praised Chicken in the oven and I've been nibbling on celery sticks and big wodges of Boursin.

It was a bit rubbish to be honest. It's basically a chicken, browned then braised/poached in a splash of vermouth, a bit of stock (well Nige said water but that would have made it even more depressing) and some celery, carrot (didn't eat but gave to DH) and leeks, and a few herbs and a bit of garlic. But when all's said and done it was just a soggy roast chicken - moist but a bit nursery foodish. I knew it would be, but I was struggling for other inspiration this evening. Grin It was not a good use of vermouth IMHO. It would have been put to better use in a large martini.

I am very happy to report that I have really not been very hungry at all for the last two or three days.

OMG I wish I had read about the polyols before going to Holland and Barret today.

I only had one tiny bar of the sugar free chocolate and I am now feeling the impact. Blush

The obvious side effects aside, is it best to avoid the polyols? I don't want to cause more of a stall this week.

FreeButtonBee how do you do the cabbage bake?

FellatioNelson · 12/02/2011 22:08

Well apparently they can cause stalls but I've never worried too much about that - I always take the view that if they keep me away from real sugar then it's a risk worth taking!

I need to increase the water I drink. Any tips? I just find it adds to my feeling of the cold iyswim?

I went through a phase of hot water and lemon but I am sure I read somewhere that you have to watch the citric acid as that can stall you Confused

Envy where did you get sugar free worthers Sal? I can't find them anywhere, so of course I now want them more.

Fellatio - "shitting through the eye of a needle" - arf! Is xylitol one of these fabled polyols? I couldn't find Splenda in our teeny health Food Shop, so picked up that instead. I was going to put it in an apple "crumble" for the family, but I'm a bit worried now about its...er....effects.

Frazzled - I love cabbage; a nice way to cook it is to saute in a saucepan with a knob of butter, a splash of water (stops it burning), salt, pepper, and freshly-ground nutmeg. Cook until it's as soft as you like it.

Hmm... what have I been eating recently??

Breakfast: another of those yummy cheddar cheesy linseed pancakes, with some bacon

Lunch: Salad with Haloumi, dry-fried (if you haven't tried Haloumi, trust me, delish. DCs love it too).

Dinner: Chicken thighs stuffed with Feta, in a tomato and leek sauce, with cauli rice.

So it was around the world in 80 cheeses today......

TV Snack: Hot whisky toddy (DH has a cold, so I'm keeping him company) and a mini Bounty (whoops!).

But I love the "put it in a box" thing. It is SOOOO tempting, once you've cheated, to just hit a downward slide of carb-fest shame, but having enjoyed my mini Bounty cheat, I've moved on, put it in a box, and tomorrow is a new day!

FreeButtonBee · 12/02/2011 23:55

Frazzled - i posted it on the last thread but reposting it here

  • Head of cabbage, or if you can get some interesting chard or black cababge or kale or something, then use that.
  • Package of bacon lardons or choppped up streaky bacon
  • One onion
  • cheddar cheese
  • semi-soft cheese like reblochon (you get it in bigger tescos)
  • pepper and nutmeg
  • bit of butter

Chop up the cabbage into fairly big pieces about 1 inch by 2-3 inches, removing any hard stalky bits. Steam until just starting to soften. Do not over cook. You want a bit of bit to your cabbage.

Fry your onions til soft. Then your bacon until nice and crunchy. put third of the cabbage in a big flat over proof dish, top with half the bacon and a third of the cheese and a few knobs of butter. season with pepper and nutmeg. Another third of cabbage and out in remaining cheese and bacon etc. Top with remaining cabbage and grate over some cheddar cheese.

Put in the oven covered for 10 mins and then uncovered for another 10-15 or until the top is bubbly and crisp.

Cut in half, put on plate and demolish. YUM!

This time I didn't bother with the onions and used cheddar as the middle layer and gruyere for the top (as that's what I had in the fridge) DH demolished in seconds and declared it fabulous.

Megglevache · 13/02/2011 00:12

Did a fab Asian coleslaw thingy for a side for dinner (chicken)

I shredded

1/2 white cabbage
1/2 red cabbage
1/4 red onion
gen bunch of chopped coriander
gen bunch of mint
gen bunch of chives

(cabbage was brined it to make it softer)
whisked up the following dressing (i don't measure so do it to taste)

Lime juice
White vinegar
Mustard with seeds
light olive oil
salt
pepper
fresh green chillis

It was so delish and gave me the crunch that I have been missing- it's also a lighter and less soggy alternative to regular coleslaw.

I will add fresh fennel the next time I do it.

i was wondering if anyone had any carb loss to exercise ratio?

if i try googling exercise and carbs - i get the usual stuff for athletes

but y'know how people can say that they excersise for 30 mins and lose 200 calories or whatever...well i wondered if there was a carb equiv.

so you excersize for 30 mins and this equates to ? how many carbs?

FellatioNelson · 13/02/2011 08:11

Sorry Custy I don't understand your query. What is exercise?

FauxFox · 13/02/2011 08:38

Had a lovely meal out last night - sashimi/fruit de mer/cheese and didn't cheat on food at all. I did however drink half a bottle of champagne and half a bottle of white wine...not drinking alcohol again til next fri at the earliest!! Back on the IPD plan with some squares of dark choc to have some time this week when I fancy (got the salt one in the cupboard still so I look forward to trying that)

Today:
B eggs and mushrooms and tomato
L Roast Pork and all the non potato trimmings with IPD cookbook cheesecake for dessert (it's rather savoury tasting but leftovers will be great for breakfasts this week Smile)
D going to make that leek and celery soup someone posted

BustleInYourHedgerow · 13/02/2011 10:16

Hi everyone, can I join? Today is my seventh day of phase 1 of IPD, just weighed myself and I've gone from 10st 7 to 10st! That's the most weight I've lost in ages, so I'm really happy:) I aim to be 8st 9 by June this year, (getting married) I'm 5ft tall so would be really happy with this weight. Found this weekend really hard, working in a petrol station at weekends, temptation everywhere! But I made it through. Ate half a feckin brie last night trying to quell my chocolate cravings! DP keeps looking at me strangely for sitting down with a cup of tea and cheese every evening, but hey, it's working! Things I have resisted so far this week: chocolate cake when friend called around on saturday. Cookies made with children on work placement on thursday. DP making me toast on tuesday morning. Hot cross buns that DS is eating right now. All the chocolates and crisps that I had to stock on friday night in work (I did have to eat a pack of walnuts to get me through this ordeal) All the bread and pastries and doughnuts that I had to 'bake' yesterday. Today I have to prepare all the sandwich fillings and salads for tomorrow, so that won't be too tempting! Oh and tomorrow making Valentine's cookies with children on place ment, but I should find it easier to resist, as at least I know I'm losing weight! Sorry if I bored everyone! Didn't realise there was an IPD thread here, so really excited to find it!

I have just had some cold roast chicken with loads of salt and some (not overly sweet) cranberry sauce. Then an Atkins Coffee Royale protein shake. I love those. They are becoming a staple breakfast for me. They really fill me up. Stuffed now.

FellatioNelson · 13/02/2011 11:48

Another little tip...if you are struggling to get into your stride with this and keep bailing before you reach ketotis, get some ThermoSlimmer appetite suppressants. (off tinternet or health food shops often sell them.) They really work - sometimes a little too well, so I don't take them all the time, but just if I need help getting over a hump for a day or two. They can take the pain out of the first few days if you are hungry but cannot face any more meat or cheese.
