I've just turned 50 and all my adult life (since 22 ish) with a few exceptions, I've been a regular 7 stone 12. I am 5ft 3 1/2" tall. I dont know why or how this is so - I eat VERY healthily and really enjoy my food (plenty of brown rice, veg, meat, fish, grains fruit and 6 glasses of water a day - I also have choc, iecream and crisps in moderation). I do half an hour of yoga for posture (I sit at a desk all day) about 3 times a week and walk 20 mins to and 20 mins from work each day. I have often been described as 'far too underweight' though! This has mainly been from people who are uncomfortable with themselves - mainly having too much weight to bear! My GP says I'm fine, extremely healthy in body, mind and weight! and so do my friends. Here is a massive clue too - I buy, wear and sell authentic vintage clothes and forty or so years ago, before we went 'USA' with supersize portions and unneccesary greed of junk food - a size 10 back then was more like a size 6 or 8 is nowadays. Those of you who feel that I and others like me are 'underweight' or 'scrawny' or 'far too underweight' are maybe not considering the basic fact that as a nation nowadays, we all consume far too much, much more than we need. It's its not always the case that the minority who are 'smaller' are in the 'wrong' and its not really okay to criticise us by writing us off as 'too skinny'!! I'm happy with myself actually and have never felt I wanted to be above or below my boringly balanced weight! With kind wishes xx

I'm 5ft 4, 8st 5, age 49. To my eye I need to lose 5lb and tone up. I'm a size 8 (very occasionally need a 10).

I'm trying to stop stressing about weight and concentrate on building muscle as I head toward the menopause. My body fat % is too high at 28% so I'm working hard with circuit and weight training to improve that. I don't look fat to anyone else though and get comments about my size and shape every day of my life. Most common adjective? "Tiny".

hillyhilly · 30/06/2012 09:32

I'm 5'4 and like to weigh around 9.5 stone, when I've gone down nearer 9, people have stopped complimenting me on my weight loss and asked if I'm ok, if I was meaning to lose weight, which I take as an inference that I don't look well.
I do however have large norks that probably weigh at least 1/2 stone (though they are much smaller than they used to be). Currently I weigh 9'12 and my double chin is coming back :-(

I know how your friend feels.

I'm 5ft4 and at the moment I'm the "fattest" I've ever been - 56 or even 57kg (8st 11 or 8st 13). I've been on double dose anti-histamines all year and it's caught up with me (increased appetite).

I normally hover around the 53kg mark which is the weight your friend is, and at that weight you are kind of between sizes which is v. annoying.

The size 10s are a little big, but the size 8s (for me anyway) can pinch and give you a horrible muffin top so I feel fat in them.

At the moment I can feel a big layer of flab around my waist and it's making me Sad.

But when I look at other people who are much "bigger" than me, I think they look great.

I am 5 foot 6 (167cm) and weigh 8 stone 5 (54kilos). My Bmi is 19.4, so a normal weight, but I still could lose a few pounds as a medium body frame ( wrist 6 inches) I definitely could be smaller ( used to weigh around 8 stone. My bust is 36, waist 27, hips 35, so not skinny! I wear an 8- 10. I am 40 years old. The highest my weight has ever been was 9 stone 7 and I looked chubby. I used to live in Italy when I was 8 stone and I was never considered thin as women there are much smaller than in the uk. I think the standards of what a normal weight is have changed because of vanity sizing. I Have never had an eating disorder and love food, previous posters mentioned being too thin at a bmi of 19, ( also underestimating the accurate bmi's for a person at 5foot4 and 8.5 stone , as if my BMI at 5 foot 6 and that weight is 19.4, someone of 5 foot 4 would have a higher bmi!). If Someone feels uncomfortable at that weight and height then usually ( if not anorexic) it's because they Need to tone up ( which I do) or lose weight. When I weighed a stone more than now I felt sluggish and tired I also felt uncomfortable with my clothes. There is nothing wrong with being heavier if you feel good, but saying 8 stone 5 at 5 foot 4 is too thin is not realistic! It's a fine weight and on some people not a thin weight at all.

What happened to Gwyneth?!

Octopus37 · 24/10/2014 20:50

Olivia I am a similar size to you, trying to lo carb at the moment to get down to 8st for my 40th. Was 8.2 last week, cause of one lapse was 8.4 today. Am also similar statistic wise, just an inch shorter with smaller boobs, same waist and hip measurements, size 8-10 and like I said heading towards 40. My DH thinks I'm mad, but I cannot carry any extra weight. I looked chubby at getting on for 9st, whereas my sister who is only slightly taller than me can weigh about 2st more than me and look ok.

frankiethepanda · 26/10/2014 15:32

This may shock some of you but I'm 5'10 and weigh 7 stone 8 due to a serious illness last year and a total lack of intrest in food now thanks to a demanding and active job now obviously I'm very thin ie legs and arms but i look no different to how i looked at 10 stone I had a bit more padding on my arms but nothing to noticeable.

Jefferson · 26/10/2014 15:45

I'm 5'3 and 8st 11 and I feel big. I can't get into size 10 and so always buy size 12 which is a little big. It's very annoying.
I am 32F up top which is an issue too. I have a flabby stomach too.
I know logically I am not fat but I'm not happy. Pre DS who is3 I was 8 st and flat of stomach and loved my body. Now not so much Sad
