Dealing with severe constipation

PersephoneFan · 18/09/2026 13:28

I know constipation is a common side-effect. Have been on mounjaro for 6/7 weeks. It's having the desired effect on my appetite, but I haven't pooed for about 10 days.

I've always tended towards constipation, and I always 'go' eventually. But I'm a bit worried about this - prunes, lactulose and even an over-the-counter enema have had no effect. I'm feeling fine - no pain or bloating.

Anyone got any advice? Would obvs prefer not to have to try to pin down my GP (hard to get appointments) - especially as it's about to be the weekend. Anything I can do to fix it myself?

Psyllium husk capsules/more water can help/

do you drink coffee? That helps me 😂

LunaTheCat · 18/09/2026 13:35

Lax sachets + coloxyl have worked .. the sachets taste awful but today moxed with OJ rather than water.
I m going to buy prunes tomorrow.
I am drinking heaps water.

wateraddict · 18/09/2026 14:07

You don’t have to use prunes. Fresh plums, apricots or papaya will also do the job, 1-3 fresh stone fruits a day have got me off movicol entirely. I have two with yoghurt and soaked chia or milled flax seeds for breakfast every day. Works a treat, good luck!

PearlsTeapot · 18/09/2026 17:06

Get to the pharmacy and buy movicol/laxido now before they close. That's the only thing that rescued me when I went 10 days. I now take 1 every day to keep me regular after a miserable constipated year.

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 18/09/2026 17:11

Two kiwi fruit. If you don’t like them, try the golden ones which are easier to eat. Three times a day until you get a result. Then a maintenance dose of every other day to keep things moving!

persephoneee · 18/09/2026 17:31

I know it sounds like a faff, but it's really worth it so I'll share - (I'm not on Mounjaro BTW but tend towards constipation if I take my eye off the ball!).

Roughly whizz (frozen are fine) raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, pear (tinned), prunes (tinned, stones out). I do a batch every couple of weeks and freeze in portions. It is very safe to refreeze frozen fruit BTW.

Mix milled (must be milled) chia and flax seed with oat bran and wheat bran, add protein powder if you want, with hot water and stir. Sounds disgusting, but it's very easy to eat, honest! Top with the mixed fruit and add a dollop of Vanilla flavoured Greek yogurt and/or honey if you want.

You will "perform" every single day at exactly the same time, believe me.

I rely on this so much that I bring a bag of the mix whenever I go away even for a night. I can get fruit locally.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it's not. And so worth it.

Doesnt senna work? I once went about 4 days without going and it worked a treat, just took. It before bed and went as soon as I got up the next day

Deadringer · 18/09/2026 17:44

I took Ducolax as and when I needed it, but i rarely need it now since i started taking a magnesium tablet every day.

B0D · 18/09/2026 17:58

I’m not on jabs but suffer with chronic constipation. Hoping for some help.
Ive recently gone from ‘ slow to no’ so took Dulcolax over the weekend. 1 didn’t work, next day - 2 did. I’ve since had no movement since Monday morning. I started Laxido as that’s prescribed, for the next 3 days, today I took 2. Still nothing. I’m scared my bowels are broken!

BraOffPjsOn · 18/09/2026 18:08

I’m having the same issue OP. This is week 6 on jabs for me but I’m barely ever having a BM and whenever I do it’s like I haven’t finished.

tried dulcolax which gave me diarrhoea the next day but still didn’t seem to have sorted it. Even a suppository didn’t really help! I’m now drinking lots of water, taking laxido every day and eating prunes but I just can’t seem to improve it.
I wondered if it’s maybe as I’m eating so much less I don’t need to go but I need to go properly at some point! I’m also not losing much as I think I’m weighed down by it!
sorry for the TMI!

MyManinCaracas · 18/09/2026 18:51

I take 4 psyllium husk capsules every morning and it does the trick. They’re 4000 mg each.

morbidcuriosity · 18/09/2026 19:09

Laxido works for me..

MoneyJo · 18/09/2026 19:37

Are you drinking plenty of water?

Pause4thoughts · 18/09/2026 20:20

Please take constipation seriously. Constipation can be fatal. A relative of mine had severe constipation. Couldn't get any help from GP or A&E. Tried laxatives, suppositories and enemas with no success. Eventually their bowel perforated. Blue lighted to hospital for emergency surgery. Spent months in hospital, nearly died on multiple occasions. Now has a stoma bag but still seriously unwell due to complications. Laxido granules are often more effective than Lactulose syrup

Allybally75 · 18/09/2026 20:27

I tablespoon of castor oil and half a squeezed lime-

PinkLemons99 · 18/09/2026 20:42

I take the liquid Dulcolax if it’s really bad and I need something strong, otherwise a single dulcolax tablet if I haven’t been in 3 or 4 days. Usually, I eat a lot of fruit and drink plenty of water and that keeps me fairly regular.

Pause4thoughts · 18/09/2026 20:45

Plenty of water is extremely important. The bowel needs water to poo.

VC10vTristar · 18/09/2026 20:56

This is the only guaranteed method for me -
2 - 3 tbsp olive oil in a glass with similar or more warm water, drink quickly whilst standing.
It coats my bowel wall internally overnight within 10 to 12 hours and always eases bowel transit.

(TMI but 6 days of figs, fruit, fibre, senna, peas, vegetables - did nothing this week - olive oil worked today finally.

TidyRose · 18/09/2026 21:08

First you need to clear the blockage. That might take several sachets of Laxido. Ten days is starting to be serious OP.
Later you will have to organise a maintenance level of something. It might be a third of a sachet every day or one of the other ideas upthread.

PersephoneFan · 19/09/2026 06:53

Thanks for all the advice. I do drink quite a lot of water. I've taken movicol and will take more over the weekend and seek help from GP on Mon if nothing has happened by then 😬

Ive had chronic constipation for years this is what my drs have said (& works) Laxido sachets are great to to soften the poo, senna tablets should get it moving, and also glycerol suppositries i think you can buy (i had mine on prescription) if that doesnt work you need to see a doctor. Good luck ( as other have said papaya , soaked chia seeds. I find gala apples work for me too)

OnlyOneAdda · 19/09/2026 07:33

I find a big bowl of all bran before bed is much more effective than any over the counter laxative - I prefer with kefir yogurt and fruit than milk.

LovelyLapin · 20/09/2026 11:30

I’ve got quite bad piles and so sometimes resort to a finger cover to do this: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/25237-digital-disimpaction

MJ actually seems to give me diahorrea so it’s swung me towards normal rather than my usual constipated. I eat a couple of kiwis with skin on per day and at the start took fybogel tablets too.

Digital Disimpaction: What It Is, Procedure & Risks

Digital disimpaction involves using a finger to break up and remove stool from your rectum. Only a trained medical provider should perform this procedure.

Yes, a little! - thank you! No longer entirely blocked. But I feel I still need to help things along. I think I may need to make a sachet of movicol part of my daily routine.
