Is hair loss inevitable with Mounjaro?

How common is hair loss with Mounjaro/other weight loss injections? Is it inevitable or do some people avoid it? I'm quite keen to try it as I need to get my weight down but I know I won't eat mindfully without some help. I have two under three and I'm exhausted. Really keen to hear other posters' experiences, good and bad!

Thank you :)

Hair loss is proven not to be directly caused by the meds, but weight loss itself, it is not witnessed in patients who don’t lose weight on it. Ie diabetes patients.

its quite common,to have a lot of shedding, as the hair follicles shut down as the body protects itself as it loses weight when weight stabilises it regrows. It is temporary during the weight loss phase.

you won’t go bald or anything, some are fine, some are not, but there is nothing you can do other than stay fat forever to prevent it.

I’ve been on it a year and haven’t noticed any hair loss. My hair is really thick anyway.
My friend with thinner hair has noticed hers thinning, so maybe it depends on your hair type? Based on my study of two people!

Twasasurprise · 07/06/2026 13:40

I had similar hair loss to postpartum. Luckily I have thick curly hair, so it's only really noticeable to me, and started regrowing again after a few months.

TheChosenTwo · 07/06/2026 13:47

I lost quite a bit of hair because I dropped a lot of weight very quickly. No bald patches but there’s certainly a lot less of it, I used to only be able to use super sized claw clips to hold up all my hair and now it fits easily into a regular sized one.
i accepted that it was a side effect of losing weight quickly and have no regrets. I lost it over quite a long period of time too, a good 8 months or so. Tried to wash it less and style it less just because I didn’t want to aggravate any loose ones 😂
Its coming back and there is regrowth.
Fortunately I had very thick hair to begin with so it wasn’t noticeable to anyone who doesn’t brush my hair (so only me!).

I’ve never had hair loss with weight loss so it must be the drug.

Matchapilatesbotox · 07/06/2026 14:39

I’ve been on the monj for 17 weeks now, down 15kg (20% of my starting weight). No hair loss or thinning, but I’ve noticed my hair growth is slower — I have very thick hair that used to grow a half-inch to an inch a month, my hair now grows at half that speed.

ShrankLastWinter · 07/06/2026 14:45

I lost 30kg in seven months and hardly noticed any difference in my hair. It does look a bit fuller and happier now that I’ve been maintaining my weight for some months, but it wasn’t a problem.

Well if you didn’t have hair loss, that’s proven isn’t it 😂 Why so they do these huge medical trials to test drugs and treatments when they could just ask one person?

HollyhockDays · 07/06/2026 14:54

I’ve had hair loss and it doesn’t really seem to be growing back. I had very thick hair though, if I’d had finer hair it would have been awful.

jessicablu · 07/06/2026 15:00

As has been stated it’s rapid weightloss that causes it, not the jab directly. It’s temporary also. I didn’t have a lot to lose so I’ve lost at a much slower rate than most, no hair loss. If it’s something you’re very concerned about, take it slow, don’t try to escalate the doses too quickly, but it may depend how well you take to it.

Isobel201 · 07/06/2026 15:14

I haven't had any hair loss, been on Mounjaro for a year now.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 07/06/2026 15:50

I’ve had gastric sleeve and Mounjaro - had really bad hair loss with my gastric sleeve due to rapid weight loss so am now slowly losing weight - happy to stay on 2.5mg for example and slowly lose weight

GreenLemonade · 07/06/2026 15:59

I haven’t had any hair loss and I’ve lost 3 stones in 5 months. My hair actually looks fuller and healthier but it could be due to all the new products and hair masks I’ve been using. I’m on a bit of a mission to glow up beyond just weight loss this year.

RoseField1 · 07/06/2026 15:59

No

DottyMcDiet · 07/06/2026 16:16

I’ve lost 38kg, 30% of my body weight, over a year of taking MJ and haven’t experienced hair loss.

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 07/06/2026 16:26

I’ve not lost much if any hair and I’ve been on WLIs since last summer. I have lost weight quite slowly which might be a factor.

Mysticmaiden · 07/06/2026 16:44

I've had a lot of hair loss and only lost 1lb a week max. In fact currently in maintenance even with mj I'm losing lots of hair, it's on the back of my clothes and when I brush my hair it clogs my brush but my weight hasn't dropped in 3 months, in fact ive gained 2lbs this week and ate lots of carbs and I'm still shedding lots of hair. I spent 3 months on wegovy and lost 4lbs in the first month but my hair loss slowed down and then stopped within days of starting it. I then started maintaining on wegovy for a few months and all fine until I swapped to mounjaro for maintenance and from first few days the hair started shedding badly. It's definitely mounjaro causing hair loss with me.

ParagonPark · 07/06/2026 16:47

For some people, hair loss NOT just caused by rapid weight loss. It is the effect of Mounjaro itself. As @Mysticmaiden experienced. It is recorded as a known side effect for some people, regardless of rate of weight loss.

I lost weight relatively slowly as it happens. I didn’t notice hair loss, like clumps falling out of my hair. My hair does seem a bit thinner though, but that could be a as well, as I’m in my 60s.

Gardengargoyle · 07/06/2026 18:05

I've lost 15 stone 4lbs over the last four years, with the help of Mounjaro since June 2024.

Not lost any hair. Or had any side effects.

KomodoIsland · 07/06/2026 18:13

I’ve lost only 20 pounds in six months and am shedding badly right now. I have about 10 pounds to go.

slightlysmallerPoisonIvy · 07/06/2026 21:54

I've lost a lot of hair, luckily it was quite thick to start with so it's not really noticeable to other people. I bought a wig when it was falling out at a very alarming rate just in case I woke up bald one day
I have lots of regrowth so I'm hopeful it will get back to full thickness when I finish losing weight

NeverEverOhNo · 07/06/2026 22:02

I lost 6 stone in about 18 months, and lost 30-40% of my hair.

IsItSnowing · 08/06/2026 09:26

I've been on it since Oct '24. Haven't noticeably lost any hair. So definitely not inevitable.

Lilimoon · 08/06/2026 09:45

I've lost 5 stone in 12 months and haven't noticed any loss. If anything my hair is in better condition.

Daschy16 · 08/06/2026 10:09

It is not inevitable, but I would say it's probable.

I lost hair - felt like a lot at one point. However, it has stopped now.

I think it is the medication - my weight has yoyoed my entire life. I have not noticed hair loss when I was previously losing weight at the same rate. Whether it is the drug or not, I feel it was a small price to pay for the long term benefits of weight loss.
