Is it usual for Mounjaro to reduce appetite on day one?

I had my first dose of mounjano this morning. Stomach seemed a little grumbly around 12.

We sat down to lunch at 2pm. I was not expecting any weight loss or effects this early on, so plated up my usual (too generous portion) of spag bol and slow roasted garlic bread.

I ate around a 1/4 of my plate, and gave up halfway through one slice of garlic bread. It all tasted wonderful, I didn't feel sick, I didn't feel painfully full, I just didn't want to carry on eating.

It's the oddest sensation I've ever had! I usually would have polished that off (and more to be honest) then gone looking for pudding.

I don't feel like eating still! Dh even brought a picnic bar back out of habit for me from the shop. I don't fancy that either (unheard of!)

Is this usual? I had read that it was going to take weeks to work and that this dose isn't considered theraputic?

Yes this is how it works.
2.5 works well for some people, so stay on it as long as you can. I lost my first 4 stone on 2.5.

Luckydog7 · 17/05/2026 16:45

Yep. I felt uncomfortable full within hours of the first dose. Barely ate anything for the first two days. It's was the strongest effect I had during the whole 4 months of taking it then.

It's a good sign that you are so sensitive to the medication. My advice is to continue on the lower dose for as long as it's effective and titrate up to the next dose in stages (eg take a 3.75 dose between 2.5-5mg) or you may get bad side effects.

I didn't know it would be like this, if I did I would have taken the plunge sooner!

It happens for some people. What you’re describing is pretty much exactly my response on the day of the first injection.

The dose not being therapeutic just means that for most people it doesn’t produce significant weight loss. But clearly each person has an individual reaction to the medication, and for some people it does have that effect.

I moved up to 5mg after 4 weeks and had side effects for the first time, in retrospect I probably should have stayed on 2.5 until I was no longer losing much weight and/or not getting much in the way of suppression.

This is how montjaro is for me and was from the beginning. People told me it was just because my mind was hoping it would work. I’ve lost just over 9 stone and am still taking 2.5 every 10/14 days.

I get a bit annoyed when people say it’s all in the mind. It bloody wasn’t for me!

Can I ask how long that’s taken?

IrisIrisIris · 17/05/2026 16:49

This is how it was for me in the first week. Unfortunately it wore off and I didn’t really get very strong suppression until months later on 15mg.

Wow, fantastic! That would be a dream!

I'm 39, 5 ft 7, and 18 stone 7 pounds. Also have PCOS and hidradentis suppurativa which my weight makes worse.

I've been on and off diets since I was 11 years old. Always lose a few stone, put more back on, then rinse and repeat.

It sounds silly but I got quite emotional. It is the first time I've ever stopped eating something I am enjoying, just because I want to. Not because I feel sick, ashamed or it ran out!

I even convinved myself it was must be all in my head, everything I'd read said it would take weeks to work, but realised quickly I'd actually be forcing myself to carry on eating!

I know very little about this and I am certainly not a doctor but two people at work on the injections said that it’s pretty normal to get side effects on the second dose rather than the first.

SilenceInside · 17/05/2026 17:04

@Verityandsquab654 it was on my 6th dose, as it happens, the second dose on the 5mg strength. My point was that in retrospect there was no need for me to move up to 5mg as I was experiencing the full effects and losing plenty of weight on 2.5mg. But at the time, in 2024, Mounjaro was still quite new and there wasn’t a lot of discussion about moving away from the suggested schedule of 4 weeks at 2.5mg and then moving to 5mg straight away.

Side effects are associated with treatment initiation and with moving up a dose level.

Not sure i understand your post.
Does that mean that previous poster's lived experience is not true because of what two other people said?
Please, explain.

Sorry I got my figures slightly wrong as lost a bit without monjaro but just checked my Shotsy app and have lost 7 stone 9 pounds in 13 months. A steady 2 pounds a week.

good luck to you. Xx

Kitt1 · 17/05/2026 17:12

Yes, that’s how you know it’s working.

You’re brave eating such a fatty meal on the same day as jabbing though!

That would have made me feel very sick.
I only eat very lean protein and veg on jab day. No carbs or anything sweet as it would definitely upset my stomach.

That’s still bloody amazing!! Was it like that consistent, I’ve hit a bit of a plateau, but hoping for a sudden “big”
loss, as I’m being angelic. 😇

I think a lot of people get suppression immediately on 2.5mg but as it’s supposed to be an introductory dose, many people don’t and will need to increase their dose after 4weeks to 5mg.

Some people are very slow responders and need to move up to 7.5mg or even 10mg before the effects kick in. Every body reacts differently so it’s impossible to predict how you will respond to the medication.

I’ve been on MJ for 9 months and have only moved up to 3.5mg a few months ago as it was very effective for me at the starting dose. I still don’t feel the need to increase to 5mg though as the lower dose is working.

Less brave, more stupidly thinking it wouldn't affect me for ages so may as well have the meal we planned!

Wasn't expecting the delivery from asda pharmacy so quickly! I only ordered yesterday and it said it would be delivered by Wednesday, than it arrived this morning.

I felt its effects the same day as well. I couldn't believe it, tbh. I've been going up the doses slowly but surely, and losing weight slowly and steadily. I'm down close to four stone in a year, and am now on 10mg. This is the dose that has worked best for me so far in terms of suppression. I've had no side effects the whole way through.

Don’t worry, you’ll learn as you go along! Everyone’s side effects are different, I’ve had none, no matter what I eat!

I'm on Nevolat (previously Saxenda - both are Liraglutide which is a daily injection). I took Saxenda for just over 2 years. I took it in the evening for the first time, and had immediate food noise reduction and never feeling that real hunger need the next day. I went on to lose 7.5st to my target with no side effects.
I've maintained for a year, but the last few months I've found it harder. I decided I wanted to go on a maintenance dose and started the new version of Saxenda on Wednesday. Thursday, the exact same reaction happened as I did the first time. It's bloody glorious. To feel so free of food - with no side effects. Amazing!
I have proved to myself I can do it off medication and maintain. But it's much easier with. So for now, I'm staying on it.
So yes, it can work that quickly - and go on to work fully with no side effects.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 17/05/2026 18:13

I took my first dose on a Thursday evening and couldn’t finish my lunch on the Friday. I did wonder if it was a placebo effect at the time but I don’t think it was. It carried on like that, I started losing weight straight away, I lost 13 stone in a year and most of that was on 5 or 7.5mg. I only went as high as 10 and lost the last couple of stone on that. Some of us are just more sensitive to the medication it seems.

(I know some will say I lost too quickly, and they’re not wrong but it wasn’t a deliberate decision it was just the way it happened for me).

Newnammmme · 17/05/2026 18:17

It was pretty fast for me , I took it before bed (because I was worried about any affect) and the next morning I struggled to finish a banana at breakfast.

that was 18 months ago. I have lost 110 lb (8st?) I tend to find I have good suppression untill the day before jab day
