Constipation on MJ - what is the best thing to take?

NedSchneebly · 15/02/2026 13:18

I'm on week 3 of 2.5mg MJ and after losing 6lb the first week, I only lost 1lb week 2, and I'm very bunged up. Drinking lots of water etc, but what should I be taking to "get things moving"? Presumably might need long term??

Any ideas appreciated!

Prune juice and also fresh pineapple works for me.

ResusciAnnie · 15/02/2026 13:21

Coconut water and exercise always does the trick IMO. Coffee too.

Make sure you’re eating healthily on MJ and they say lots of fiber but clearly you need the right amount for your own body. Drink lots as a habit!

Ileithyia · 15/02/2026 13:22

Leafy vegetables, milled flax seed, fermented foods/drinks like kefir or kombucha. (Avoid carrots, parsnips, potato, or grains)

GiveMeWordGames · 15/02/2026 13:24

You'll probably get as many different answers as replies to this one, OP. 😄

A lot of people swear by kiwi fruit. I don't like those so can't give an opinion. My favoured option is magnesium citrate, taken at night. As a bonus, it helps with sleep.

Harrietsaunt · 15/02/2026 13:24

Senna

VioletandMauve · 15/02/2026 13:25

I have 2 psyllium husk tablets in the morning, then 3 prunes and 2 tablespoons of golden linseed during the day. Also have Magnesium 3 in 1 tablets in the evening. Works a treat!

PersephoneSmith · 15/02/2026 13:26

Psyllium husk, awesome stuff

twilightcafe · 15/02/2026 13:29

A small glass of prune juice.

twilightcafe · 15/02/2026 13:30

Or a bowl of All Bran

Sealedwithmykit · 15/02/2026 13:37

Prunes always featured heavily early on in my mj days, always seemed to work, go easy though 😂

Spidey66 · 15/02/2026 13:58

Dried apricots.

when I smoked that used to make me go but obviously I don’t recommend it!

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 15/02/2026 14:07

Lactulose

ThirdStorm · 15/02/2026 14:23

Another vote for psyllium husk.

MrsPositivity1 · 15/02/2026 14:24

Fresh pineapple or dried figs

Deadringer · 15/02/2026 14:30

I was using laxatives until I discovered magnesium anout 6 months ago and I haven't had constipation since. I took it initially for foot cramps but since I started I go every day or every other day at least, but the best thing is its soft and easy, no straining. I always suffered from constipation regularly even before mj, so magnesium has actually changed my life.

HollyhockDays · 15/02/2026 14:39

Also put your feet up on a small stool or box so your knees are lifted up.

Ruthietuthie · 15/02/2026 14:41

I take magnesium citrate. I believe (could be wrong!) that it draws water into the bowel to soften the stool. It really works.

Sweetiedarling7 · 16/02/2026 07:16

Lactulose. Available over the counter in the chemist or even from amazon.

socks1107 · 16/02/2026 07:23

Can I jump on and ask, physillium husk made everything worse for me, it was awful. Mag citrate was brilliant but advised not to take daily? Does anyone take it daily and have good results

Johnogroats · 16/02/2026 07:24

Allbran and prunes. I hate prunes (too sweet for me especially when on MJ) but it did the trick.

Johnogroats · 16/02/2026 07:25

Now post MJ I try and put a good spoon of chia seeds into cereal or yogurt. That seems pretty effective too.

Wallywobbles · 16/02/2026 07:28

A lot of water is helpful. For me it’s easily the best solution and as soon as I stop I regret it. I take triple magnesium at night - don’t love the dreams though.
1lb in a week is. A reasonable loss though.

ohmygiddyauntagain · 16/02/2026 08:20

I find it’s at its worst in the 3 days after my jab so for the first three days of the week I take a laxido sachet (usually mixed into my water bottle). It’s still a little (ahem) like rabbit pellets but I’m at least going. By day 4, it’s back to normal and then on day 7 (jab day) it starts again. I think the key is consistency - find what works for you and do the same thing consistently even if you’re not sure whether you need it or not. I’m now in a routine with it and I’ve been on MJ for 10 months.

Funny how we’re all different because psyllium husk (2 tabs in the morning) worked really well for me and too much magnesium citrate (2 tabs in the evening) made me have 3 really bad days of diarrhoea! I’ve dropped the citrate down to 1 tablet in the evening and it works well.

The bane of my existence!

Prunes and apricots and kiwis. Lactulose every night. I take Senna tablets although they don't seem to do anything for me. Drink as much as I can (I'm not a big drinker at all, just one or two glasses of squash). I also take fibre gummies from amazon. And I eat fruit and fibre for breakfast every day.
