Starting WLI and not telling DH

Nancylancy · 27/01/2026 08:57

Basically that's it. I know DH, family and friends will be judgemental, and so I won't be telling him or anyone else. I can't be bothered with being judged or feeling like I have to explain, so I've ordered it and will be doing click and collect, and injecting there and then. I will then carry on with diet / exercise and hope the weight starts to come off!

Is anyone else doing the same? Since I won't be talking to anyone IRL about it, I've posted here to tell someone about it!

I am overweight and have high cholesterol, I've started going to the gym and have tried to diet but I end up feeling deprived then failing miserably, I'm constantly tired and looking after my 2 kids with husband working away and a full time job, I just really want some help to feel better and make the weight loss easier. I have a terrible sweet tooth, and impulsive tendencies so when I've had a bad day or am a bit tired I go for sweet things, I comfort eat. I'm hoping Wegovy will help curb the cravings so that I can find other ways to cope.

Interested to be hear anyone else's stories and maybe create a supportive thread for those keeping their WLI's completely private.

@MisseyLurker "I keep my pens in the fridge in the salad drawer as he never ventures into them." - I love that, made me laugh out loud

Started 18 months ago, and not a sole except my diabetic nurse / GP knows.
Started at 160kg and currently at 119kg so about half way there.
Only 1 person has noticed I’ve lost weight! Who just said oh you’ve lost weight & I said oh yes a bit, and that was it.

Well done that’s amazing! I bet lots have noticed but don’t want to mention it.

I always put things I don’t want found too quickly in the veg and salad drawer 😁

This was me a year ago. I absolutely hated myself 😞

After a year of research and seeing the results of a school mum who was documented it I took the plunge and ordered it. I knew I wasn't going to tell DH as

  1. I wasn't convinced it was going to work

  2. I knew his views on it. As someone who has never struggled with his weight he'd only ever seen negative stories about it.

  3. I was secretly ashamed I couldn't just "eat less, move more"

  4. I knew he'd talk me out of it and I didn't want talking out of it.

As soon as I'd started taking it I was actively calorie counting and exercising. Weight shifted little by little and 6 months in I fessed up. Not going to lie, he was very very angry. More so that I'd not spoken to him about it and not told him.

After a lengthy conversation, I explained I wasn't getting it from Sharon at the hairdresser and from an actual pharmacy. I think he was worried about side effects. I also admitted to him home truths, that'd I hadn't even admitted to myself let alone out loud. Like my secret eating, how lonely I felt as due to my snoring we weren't actually sharing a bed, how much I hated myself. He has absolutely no idea if felt like that.

A year on I've lost 5.5 stone, completed couch to 5k and regularly go to the gym. We don't discuss my wli but I know his opinion has changed about it and is proud of my progress.

A handful of people know now but only those who I know wouldn't be judgemental.

Make sure your GP is informed by the company in order that the medication shows on your health records. I wouldnt have thought any hospital would think to test for whether someone is on WLI or necessarily whether it would even show up.

I agree 'husbands' dont need to know so that they can tell paramedics that is a ridiculous notion, mine wouldnt even remember what day to day meds Im on in any case and get it all arse about face. But OP it should be communicated from the clinc to your own GP

Also lol to the idea that we have husbands or partners wondering what that 300 quid bill in. Does no one have their own account!!!

really well said!
I find it astonishing that people made some assumptions that her husband controls their spending and also that they will remember what meds are on.

also meds are a lot cheaper than a handbag or a champagne habit 😂

My friend collapsed with kidney pain and there was no buildup or warning, it’s just sensible to tell someone.

Really? What, collapsed, out of the blue, no warning pains, felt right as rain & then collapsed? I find that hard to believe. I’m a doctor & have never heard of such a case.

Yes she injected the whole needle in one day.

What, she took four doses in one day? If that’s the case, then she’s got more to worry about than her weight. And I still don’t believe this would result in immediate keeling over..

Jumimo · 29/01/2026 18:18

So weird to keep something like this from your husband. All those saying they hid it too? Wow. Not a sign of a very good relationship at all.

I'm sure we're all grateful for the judginess, hope you're enjoying the warm glow of smugness now.

Edited

It happened later that day, and yes it’s put her back in the depths of ED, it’s rife in the ED community. I know she’s an outlier in general though. I still think it’s weird to not mention to the person you share your life with. If they are judgemental/critical then why are you with them? (Not you personally)

Exactly. Definitely crap relationships/marriages. You should be able to share anything.

ramonaquimby · 29/01/2026 18:44

How sad you can't be honest with a husband.

MIAMNER · 29/01/2026 18:46

I hide mine in a prescription box of oestrogel (HRT) in the fridge. If anyone asks about the ‘fridge item’ delivery, I tell them it’s menopause stuff.

But it's not smug. It's a big thing taking WLI, if you're not sharing that with a partner then the relationship does have cracks

That's a good idea! I don't have any other medications to put in the fridge, but I can probably find a discreet place to hide it if necessary. I had seen on another thread that if you do a click and collect, it's kept refrigerated at the pharmacy until you collect it - and so if I injected it in the car right after collection, I wouldn't need to keep it in the fridge any more and could just keep it in my handbag or somewhere else in the house.

Some of my friends have also torn others to shreds for WLI (behind their backs of course). I don't have the mental energy to deal with that, or to think about being talked about. I worry about what others think of me a lot (I know I shouldn't, but I can't help it).

I plan to get more sleep and reduce my calories with the help of the WLI - mainly from the sweet snacks I usually eat from comfort eating. Have people found that it reduces sweet cravings at all? I'm hoping it will, as once I'm able to cut out sweet things (or at least reduce them) it will be easier to tell people that's all I'm doing.

I've been waiting for two operations. The painkillers killed my appetite I've slowly lost weight. Last month dug out clothes that hadn't fitted me for years and started wearing them again. DH hasn't noticed my weight loss, nor my sons. One person has my DIL. .

It's so funny how invisible I am to the world.

HereIGoOnceMore · 29/01/2026 20:36

WLI are not suitable for people with ED and it is very difficult to take a whole syringe at once and almost impossible to do so accidentally.

Unless someone is severely dehydrated kidney pain and kidney issues are not expected side effects.

Scaremongering bollocks aside, used appropriately and correctly, WLI are safe, licensed and prescribed medications with mild indigestion and constipation being the most frequently experienced side effects. Sensible adults don’t need permission from anyone except their prescriber to take responsibility for their own health. Yes, make sure your GP is informed and it is on your medical records. Yes, tell your holiday insurance company if they ask, yes, make sure you take suitable contraception if on Mounjaro and yes make sure you keep hydrated and eat balanced, healthy foods, but in smaller portions.

But who you do - or don’t - tell outside of your health professionals is nobody’s business but yours.

FWIW I told DH and no one else. I’m sure some people have wondered, but honestly? Let them. I’m so happy I took the plunge.

Thanks. I have my pen on the way now, I'm coming round a bit to the idea of telling DH, but I will definitely wait a while. I'm off to the library to get some weight loss recipe books!

I didn’t tell my DH for the first few months but eventually did. He doesn’t like me using it but we just don’t really talk about it. I have lost just over 2.5 stone so far (started in September) with another stone to go, and I’m so so pleased I’ve done it. Still using 5mg but considering ordering 7.5 pen next. Good luck!

Sometimes its easier when you try it and you dont have major side effects and can see it working, then am sure its a different conversation

Nevergiveuponyourdreams · 05/02/2026 19:18

The only person who knows is my friend who guided me through how to get it after she told me she’d been taking it. My DH has no interest in what medication I take on a daily basis for my hypothyroidism nor my HRT and as he was the one making passive aggressive comments about food I put on my plate on holiday - and believe me I don’t eat much - as much as I love him and have been with him for 36 years I’ve decided it’s my business and not his. He has commented on my weight loss and thinks it’s due to the protein powder I have in the cupboard!! The same powder was there before I lost weight.🙄 When I get to my ideal weight I might say something but then again…..
