Monjaro and alcohol

Looneytune253 · 04/08/2025 14:03

Hello. I've been on mounjaro since march. I've had a relatively easy ride so far. Minimal side effects. Also had the unexpected effect of stopping me craving alcohol. Though not an alcoholic i probably drank too much on a weekend and hasn't bothered me at all since being on it.

I've moved up the doses and I'm now on 10mg. I have still enjoyed nights out over the course of the months I've been on it and drank relatively normally HOWEVER, recently I had a lot to drink and I was more poorly than I've ever been on the drink. This was genuinely super unpleasant. I had the same effects the following weekend with only one drink. This was over a month ago but haven't wanted to test it again. I am going on holiday soon and would probably like to enjoy a drink but I'm petrified of trying because of how poorly I'd been. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Obv I'll not bother with alcohol if it is that but I wouldn't mind having a drink or two on holiday if it turns out to be just a coincidence.

Any advice

I was a big wine drinker before MJ - easily a bottle a night minimum without getting drunk, which really worried me and was a big factor in my weight gain. Barely touch it now. it feels like acid sitting in my belly and gives me horrid heartburn. I have had a few glasses at social functions but only once enough for a hangover since also starting in March and it wasn’t pleasant. I wouldn’t say worse than I’ve been with a hangover before but I’ve had a lot of horrendous ones in my time!

i also don’t like the smell of wine now, someone else near me drinking red disgusts me when I get a waft, and white isn’t great either, I’ve had it as a spritzer mostly which is ok.

i have found that vodka mixer is much more palatable but that I naturally stop after a couple which is fantastic.

even when I reach goal the impact on my drinking is so beneficial I may explore micro dosing.

Have a break and stop taking it for a week before your holiday and while you are away. I have an awful headache now usually if I drink alcohol but would prefer to let my hair down a little on holiday or for special occasions and this has worked for me. Have fun whatever you chose to do :-)

Frugalgal · 04/08/2025 14:54

I was only on 2.5 and stopped it for a week on holiday, not so I could drink but because I knew I wouldn't be able to eat the same way as at home and didn't want side effects. I regretted it afterwards because it took several days before the next injection kicked in and I was hungry.

In your shoes I might take a half dose for the holiday week but, even then, you don't really know if there's enough in your system to give you side effects if you drink..

Personally I find the disincentive to drink is great as I had a bit of a wine habit due to getting into the habit of needing a 'reward' for a hard day. I was addicted to the anticipation and the dopamine effect of the reward rather than the alcohol which I didn't really like that much. Mounjaro opened my eyes to that very quickly, for which it has been worth it's weight in gold.

I can't drink on MJ one at most and I start feeling sick or I actually throw up. I"m on 12.5 mg.

insomniacalways · 04/08/2025 14:58

Yep it killed any desire for alcohol dead. I used to love red wine could easily knock off a bottle. But now I can tolerate something light and fizzy in a small amount. But if I have more than a couple of glasses, I am sick/ headachey.

Purpleturtle45 · 04/08/2025 14:59

Yep, me too, barely drunk a thing since I have been on it which has probably contributed to weight loss as well.

Radiatorvalves · 04/08/2025 15:00

I’m on 2.5 and have kind of gone off booze. Recently come back from hols where DH and the boys had a few beers… usually I’d have joined them, but I really didn’t fancy it that much. I’m more of a wine drinker but am a bit meh about that. I did have a week gap while away (no injection) and the disinterest didn’t change. I’m prob going to do one more month and am hoping that my eating and drinking habits will remain changed.

MagnoliaTreePetals · 04/08/2025 15:03

Like you @Looneytune253 , I really enjoyed my work me pre MJ, and drink much less now, just 2 small glasses on a Saturday/Sunday. I don't intend to limit myself but something just switches on and I know I can’t drink any more. Which is great!

We had a big family celebration a while ago that started before lunch and went on through the afternoon. Although I stopped after my usual couple of glasses, a few hours later I had a couple more. That evening I felt extremely sick!
since then I was very cautious about alcohol.

However, I went on holiday recently and had no problem enjoying a nice glass of wine at lunch, and again at dinner. In fact, on a couple of nights it may well have been more than just the 1!
I chose to go up a dose a week before the holiday and to take the MJ as usual.
I had a fabulous time, didn’t feel deprived or like I was missing out.

Autocorrect! Not ‘my work’ but my wine! Don’t know how to edit!

WDW · 04/08/2025 15:07

I’ve found I have no desire to drink alcohol since being on Mounjaro although I had 3 small glasses of wine this last weekend for the first time since May and it didn’t make me feel unwell at all… It’s just the desire to drink it isn’t there for me. I only used to have a bottle of wine or a couple of vodka martinis over a weekend now & then anyway but it’s so strange. I just really don’t want it at all and I used to love a martini! 🍸

Plumnora · 04/08/2025 15:08

Im on 7.5mg and still have a small glass of red wine some nights.... but I mean small.... a friend recently gave up drinking and says she's never felt happier so I think a lot of our wanting to drink is psychological and we associate it with happy times.. you may find just having a tiny about of alcohol while you're away is all you need.

Tbh it’s a really good opportunity to try not having alcohol. I did still drink for a while on MJ but it really isn’t good and I’ve mostly stopped now, bar a half glass every now and then. I’d just keep going on the same dose and explore the virgin cocktails list.

DoraDont · 04/08/2025 15:12

I'd actually given up booze a couple of months before I started Mounjaro anyway, but it's given me the impetus to carry on.

Can no longer bear the thought of wine or alcoholic beer. Luckily the booze free options now are so good I don't miss it in the slightest.

Just come back from my holiday and didn't feel like I was missing out by not drinking at all.

Pumpkinforever · 04/08/2025 15:17

Yep I have gone right off alcohol. I will have the occasional glass of fizz but I just have no desire to consume at the same rate as I used to. I was always within the recommended guidelines but now I can now go for weeks without a drink as I have no real urge to consume it.

On my last holiday I have the odd cocktail but that was it. It didn’t make me unwell but I didn’t want more not like the pre MJ days.

WitchesofPainswick · 04/08/2025 15:22

I can drink gin and tonic but that's it. I actually suspect it's the sugar, rather than the alcohol.

SunandMoor · 04/08/2025 15:26

I have been on MJ for 8 weeks now. I was quite a big wine drinker would have several glasses most nights. I could drink a bottle and not really feel it the next day. Now I don’t have the desire every night to have a drink and only drink at the weekend. I have found that any more than 2 glasses and I feel very rough the next day. I like to have a drink and would not want to give up as I think it’s a social thing and all my friends drink. However having a 2 glass rule in my head has been fine. I have tended to have spritzers to dilute it a bit too! My go to non alcoholic drink is soda and lime juice. I went on holiday and stuck to the 2 glass rule and it was fine and I lost weight!

sweetpickle2 · 04/08/2025 15:35

There was a thread on this recently- https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weight-loss-injections/5380956-alcohol-and-mj?reply=145988506

Very common on MJ, people can't handle the booze as much or go off it completely. For me I still fancy it but I now throw up after a few, which is enough to put me off!

Motherofdragons24 · 04/08/2025 15:40

I’m not a big drinker, a few glasses of wine one or twice a week at most. I’ve definitely found I feel pretty hungover the next day after just one two glasses of wine. If I have a big night out or going away for the weekend and would like to drink more I just skip the Mounjaro the week in the lead up. Seems to work well. While I don’t mind forgoing alcohol 99% of the time I still occasionally want to have a night out and enjoy a drink without feeling like death the next day.

spoonbillstretford · 04/08/2025 15:49

I've had probably a bottle of wine with food at a work do over one evening and was fine, and felt fine the next day. On holiday this year on 10mg I had one or two drinks an evening and also sometimes a glass of wine with my lunch, all good.

I've only had one time I felt rough the next day, when I drank three pints of lager then had a strong cocktail after.

Drinking in moderation/having a bit more on high days and holidays is definitely possible for me anyway. Most of the time I have <10 units a week.

AliceMcK · 04/08/2025 15:52

Another one who struggled to drink on it, especially wine, just one glass and I was throwing up. I actually saw it as a good thing as alcohol is empty calories, as well as I eat loads of when I’ve had a drink and no hangovers. I’ve had to come off it due to cost and my alcohol cravings as well as unhealthy food are back.

I would just turn enjoying yourself without the booze, or have watered down drinks, wine & soda etc..

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 04/08/2025 15:55

Sadly whilst MJ is giving me brilliant food suppression, it's not stopping me drinking! I really like a glass or two of cold white wine with my dinner and I haven't gone off it at all.

However, I am trying very hard to restrict my wine intake to Friday and Saturday evenings, ie not when I've got work the next day, and that seems to be working ok.

I am exactly the same ! I wish it would put me off wine , I’m losing weight but I’m sure it would have been quicker if I had cut that back, and I just factor it in to my calorie counting now

Alrightnowbaby · 04/08/2025 16:26

Not touched a drop since Feb, the thought makes me feel sick, I have had a glass poured for me at a birthday, had to pour it away the smell made me heave.
I've not gone this long without alcohol for about 40 years, it's really unbelievable, it must work on the reward centre in the brain, because the calmness is also a revelation. I have taken every anti depressant going since I was 25, none ever worked, mounjaro has, and I've heard similar from other people.
Obviously I started taking it to lose weight, after about a month it quickly became clear that this drug, is a wonderful thing for calming the brain, the added bonus for me has been losing the weight.
The sad thing is it's obviously not prescribed for this, and now I'm way below goal weight I'm going to struggle to get it.
I hope more research is done on to this aspect of mounjaro and it becomes a tool for asd/adhd in the future, because it's been nothing short of a miracle in this aspect for me.

MJ is being trialled on alcoholics as it seems to surprise the desire to drink! I barely drink at all since starting MJ. Usually have 1 glass when we go out and I’m happy with that!
