Well done @WafflingDreamer

I’ve just weighed in and I’m 4lbs down this week and my bmi has dropped into the 30s!

Oh wow you must be so thrilled, its so rewarding to hit those kinds of milestones.

GnomeDePlume · 12/06/2025 07:02

Weigh in and jab day.

SW 137kg BMI 53.5
CW 112.0kg BMI 43.7
GW 60kg BMI 23.4

0.5kg in the week, happy with that. Total loss so far 25kg. Still not quite made the 4 stone mark. But I am one third of the way there. Though I am not sure where there will actually be. I just know it is still a long way from here!

Thank you for this thread. The weekly weigh-in is keeping me honest.

Tried on some old shorts last night which had previously been cast into the pit of despair. They fitted and were, if anything, on the loose side which I dont think they were when I bought them.

So, size wise, I am now a Cotton Traders 3XL. Somewhere between a 24 & 26. I'm 17 stone 9lbs.

One of my big fears as I got larger was that I would never be able to buy clothes again. This is one of the things which makes the super obese isolated. Nothing to wear so cant go out so food is delivered.

I have seen some people suggest that this is a good thing and will spur/shame people into losing weight. But it doesnt work like that. Once you cant find clothes to wear you are already trapped into the cycle.

My lottery day dream is to design/make clothes for larger sized people. Lovely natural fabrics, shapes which flatter rather than cling.

I just took my dresses back and re-ordered them in the next size down. I originally got XL which is a 20-22. It was good but very stretchy and too big and will only get bigger.

so I’ve gone for large. Which is a 16-18. I do not normally wear 16 or 18. Not yet. But there’s enough stretch in it to accommodate my waist now and down for another 4-5 inches. So all summer!

I really dithered but I’m glad I’ve chosen to do it. Also, they’re REALLY LONG! I’m 5’7” but it’s floor length on me. I’ll need to shorten them a little I think. But that’s relatively easy.

I’m really excited!

That's so good, well done, such an ego boost when you can wear a size smaller.

What a fantastic dream to have. I hope you can, I remember when I could only shop in Evans as a younger lady and it was so expensive and mostly voluminous tents. I was so excited when Frist French made things a bit more stylish, but really, just more voluminous tents in brighter colours. Then it was simply Be for work wear, yucky polyester print dresses that boiled me. I liked Anna Sholz but I couldn't afford it.

I also remember as an adult being able to wear kids clothes from Woolworths, the teen range I have been every size from a 6 to a 26 in the last 30 years. I remember my joy at slipping into a Seven for all Mankind size 10 pair of khaki jeans. It must have been early 2000s. I don't know what the point of this is. I'm still in shock about the redundancy I think. Sorry for waffling, just a big well done from me.

GnomeDePlume · 12/06/2025 08:26

@Doggymummar not waffling at all! I think there is a joy in clothes which fit you. Not constantly un-clinging or pulling down tops or dresses which are slightly too short.

'Boil in the bag' polyester clothes should be banned under the Geneva convention. Of course clothes manufacturers like it because it is cheap

Motnight · 12/06/2025 09:42

I am loving all the weigh in and NSV. And the chat! I am going to visit marks and Spencers and Next next week for clothes. I am not sure of my size. Have some loose trousers from Next in size 16. Wearing size 20 tops, which my DD says are too big and size 20 and 22 skirts (but elasticated waists). I have a very big tummy still.

@Doggymummar Evans was rubbish for clothes for women in their 20s and 30s (might have changed now). And not even good quality.

@WafflingDreamer isn't it lovely not to have to worry about chairs breaking or being too small?

I've worked out that I have lost 81 lbs. Doesn't seem real.

Agree re Evans, but it was that or be naked, so,........ No one really gave a shit about bigger girls and women did they. Everything seemed to make me look 50. That's ok now I'm nearer 60 but at 30 it was criminal.

Enjoy the shopping 😁 I still prefer online, but I live in a market town and have three shops, fat face Roman and Marksies.

81 pound is so much isn't it very well done

GnomeDePlume · 12/06/2025 10:22

Something I still see is that there is little variety in fit for plus sizes.

The assumption is that we all have big bust and hips. Stretchy fabric is then used to deal with variation which means man made fibres, clingyness, sweatiness.

I'm barrel shaped so I end up with a lot of unisex clothes. They fit round my middle but have huge shoulders and are often over-long. Essentially they are men's clothes with a broader range of colours.

And even more joy in clothes you chose because you love them and not just because they fit and make you not want to cry when you look at your tummy in them.

TragicMuse · 12/06/2025 10:55

The other thing is that while they assume size 20 upwards equals enormo-boob etc they NEVER accommodate a fatter arm/bicep. Or a narrow shoulder. Or a basically small bone structure. I’ve got a good rack. I mean, when I met my husband online I described myself as having ‘great tits, your average goddess, basically’. But my bust is not where I carry weight. My back, yes. But the boobs themselves are always ample regardless of my size. And I don’t have shoulders like an American quarterback.

But then, THEN, I also bought a vest top last night. I tried it on. The large was weirdly flappy at the bust. So I bought a medium! Make it make sense, FGS!

I’m not a medium, I’m still wearing 20 mostly. But the bust fit was better. And I’m going to tuck it in, so the hip fit was unimportant. I shall be ruching it, in a casually unstudied way!!

Billybingbong · 12/06/2025 11:03

I'm starting to rediscover my love of clothes, and actually bought a few new things yesterday because I liked them, not just because they were big enough. It's such a lovely feeling. I'm going to a concert tomorrow, and for the first time in forever, I've actually planned my outfit. Usually, I would just throw on whatever made me feel less fat and more invisible.

I don't think it's just about how much weight I've lost, as I still have such a long way to go. But I think MJ has changed my whole mindset and made me much more positive. Dare I say, it's even helped me love myself a little bit more that I ever did. We ARE worth it, and we DO deserve to wear nice clothes and feel good about ourselves

GnomeDePlume · 12/06/2025 11:23

Since I started making clothes and especially dresses for DD I have realised just how much fit actually matters.

GnomeDePlume · 12/06/2025 11:35

All too often plus sized clothes are just standard sized expanded in all directions. So you can end up with vest tops with arm holes so big you can practically see your pants they gape so much.

I did find a perfect losing weight dress pattern for DD. It had a bodice which laced at the back so the fit could be adjusted. She has lost weight since I made the first two in this pattern. I need to take her measurements again so I can make it again but smaller.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 12/06/2025 12:05

Your DD is so lucky to have you Gnome ❤️.

I'm excited about the prospect of buying clothes I actually like. It's horrible just having to buy what fits. Although discovering seasalt saved me from Evans but even so I do want to be able to wear floaty skirts. (I don't know actually will I be able to do that with loose skin? Tight pants?) And jeans. I've not been able to wear jeans for years.

I'm nowhere near this stage yet but hearing that others are is inspiring!!

I remember a fancy dress party (I hate these) I couldn't get out of and just not being able to get anything in my size. It was soul destroying.

Ooh! What pattern is that? Enquiring minds need to know!!

@TragicMuse this is the dress: Hughes dress.

I also recommend this book. From this I made the dress in the photo attached.

Oh I’ve looked at the Hughes dress! It’s v much up my strasse!

TragicMuse · 12/06/2025 13:23

I love a bit of pattern drafting when I have the time. Which I don’t at the moment since I’m now supposed to be working on my dissertation for my masters!!

Put some shorts on this morning to do a bit of gardening and they nearly fell down! I bought them last summer but sized up as like shorts baggy so they don’t cut in on my very large thighs but this year they ridiculously big now.

Found a great hack though, I did them up again by threading the button through a belt loop and then through the button hole. Obviously I wouldn’t wear them out or on holiday but does mean that I can keep wearing them around the house and garden through the summer.

I am starting to think strategically about clothes. I really don’t want to waste a fortune on new clothes every few months and thankfully I only need to go into office once a week so don’t need to buy lots of “decent work clothes” but think this is going to be an interesting challenge. I have read a lot about people using Vinted but also lots of horror stories about it so will all be part of the learning curve.

Doggymummar · 12/06/2025 13:39

I've been tightening up my t-shirts by using a hair bobble or two to create a knot in each side.

GnomeDePlume · 12/06/2025 13:51

I altered a few of my rigid cotton tops by taking an upside down V shaped cut out of the front and back centre going from just under the neck line to the hem. Essentially a large central dart front and back.

This sounds really good and I bet it works really well but sewing is definitely not my thing so think I’ll have to stick to simpler ideas like @Doggymummar just suggested.

Thank you.

The Hughes dress is a relatively straightforward make and the instructions are good.

The one from the book was really enjoyable but took more time. DD had a lot of input to get the style and fit of dress she wanted.

DD has lost 8 stone on mounjaro. According to BMI she is still obese!
