Funny ways people have noticed you have lost weight

A lighthearted thread for a bank holiday. I am now 3 stone down and it's starting to show. I've had a couple of funny, well meaning interactions recently about my weightloss.

I recently met an old friend who I hadn't seen for a year or so. The first thing he said to me with a look of utter shock on his face was "My God, you've los... los... look well!". Clearly was about to say "lost weight", thought better of it and went with "look well".

I was eating my packed lunch at work and a colleague was hovering, and clearly wondering whether to say what was in their head. They went with "That looks like a nice lunch, you have been really healthy recently haven't you? It really shows". Another round about way of noticing the weightloss.

I know some people are worried about commenting on weightloss in case it wasn't deliberate, or something is wrong, which I completely understand. I never comment unless someone has told me they are on a health journey. I am enjoying the inventive ways people are using to try and encourage me without actually mentioning dieting or weight.

Anyone else had any comments which have made them smile?

Happy Easter all.

well done on your weight loss doesn't it feel amazing!

I’ve lost 3 stone & none of my friends have actually said anything about it - this is not a jealousy thing they’re just very mindful not to pry and I haven’t talked about it. People at work are a different kettle of fish …. There’s a lady I know who is great but quite blunt. Keeps looking me up and down quite blatantly and keeps asking what I’m doing “ Trying not to eat Tracy”. The men are also very effusive… “ where have you gone”…. Bellowed across the office “ you’re fading away” … I’m a size 12 now from an 18 at my largest so not exactly wraith like. I’m not offended I think it’s funny but I don’t discuss it.

Itisallgoingtobeok · 18/04/2025 08:04

@finallyskinny- thank you, you too! I still have another three stone to go, but I feel wonderful!

I have lost 8 stone so it really shows and lots of people have gone with the 'you look well' line.

However, I did meet with some uni friends who I haven't seen in 2 years and not one of them mentioned a thing 😆 which is now way worse than any comment.

Itisallgoingtobeok · 18/04/2025 08:06

@Divebar2021- that lady sounds quite mean, but I’m glad you are not upset by it. Congratulations on your weight loss!

I’ve lost a stone and everyone at work know how I’ve done it and are really lovely. Being called ‘skinny’ is definitely a new thing!

HobbyHorse30 · 18/04/2025 08:11

I had WLS and have been v open about it to avoid awkward interactions. Despite that, someone recently came into my office, and asked me if HobbyHorse was in. I’m more than 10 stone down and people have always been openly complimentary - in an ideal world we just wouldn’t judge/discuss people’s weight but that’s not how it seems to go - however now I’m getting the “ooooh I hope you’re not planning to lose much more” comments.

Frontroomroomjungle · 18/04/2025 08:17

My friend let me take her pony for a ride - she wouldn't have done that the year prior as I was quite obviously too heavy. Not funny, I suppose, but felt nice.

LyricalGangsta · 18/04/2025 08:19

The funniest way I find is you can see from their face they can tell but absolutely refuse to mention it.
Jealous. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sounds like your colleagues are lovely. The attention can be quite nice can’t it?

@HobbyHorse30- wow! 10stone, that’s an amazing achievement. That must have been really hard work. How did you feel when your colleague didn’t recognise you?

@Frontroomroomjungle- that speaks volumes without saying a word doesn’t it? Congrats on the weight loss!

I have only one person who I think is starting to become jealous. She started to loose weight a year before I did and has done amazingly well, but for all sorts of reasons has stalled. We have about the same amount to loose and now I’ve overtaken her. I’m being really supportive still and it isn’t a race, but I can see she is getting a bit funny about it.

I’m far more direct - I don’t see Wow you’ve lost weight as a bad thing!

You’ve worked hard and a compliment should be accepted

Zempy · 18/04/2025 09:09

It’s a minefield isn’t it. I think the comment about your lunch was really tactful.

I have lost 2.5 stone since early Jan and people either say nothing, or wow, you lost weight, well done! However, I am very open about being on WLI.

To be fair it wasn’t a colleague so much as a visiting g work acquaintance from another company!

OntheTrainX · 18/04/2025 18:06

A colleague assumed I’m part of a work group that’s been training for the Three Peaks Challenge. The six women who are doing it (varying degrees of fitness) have all lost a bit of weight so the colleague sort of mentally grouped me in with them I suppose, and asked me a question about ”my” arrangements.

I was flattered - I’m far fitter than I was two months ago but I’m not up to climbing three mountains in quick succession!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 18/04/2025 18:09

My friend said "I like your hair like that, it really suits you". My hair hasn't changed for about 10 years 🤣

BakedBeeeen · 18/04/2025 18:14

A colleague of mine has visibly lost a few stone, and actually I know she has been doing lower carb/intermittent fasting. However, saying “wow, you look great” seems like a comment that actually says “wow, you were fat before”! Sort of acknowledging that she was fat before. I’m wondering if those who have lost weight like people to mention it, particularly work colleagues. It feels like such a personal comment on someone’s appearance, which usually is not done in the workplace!

Darlinghag · 18/04/2025 18:33

last november, when i was at about 4.5st lost (2.5ish via Mj and in the space of a few months) two colleagues - men - who i had not seen since early summer asked if i had always been that short 😂😂😂 i dont know if it was a roundabout way of noticing the loss or if they genuinely couldnt tell what had changed!

Itisallgoingtobeok · 18/04/2025 18:53

@Darlinghag- that’s hilarious!
