Sharps bins for mounjaro

oatmilkisntsobad · 16/04/2025 15:01

My sharps bin from Med Express is full and they’ve said they don’t provide another one or have any facilities for disposal of this one. Would appreciate advice on how others manage this

Can your GP practice or pharmacy supply one, some pharmacies will supply and dispose of them or the practice nurse.

SilenceInside · 16/04/2025 15:03

You can check with your local council what disposal scheme they run. Mine does a free service that you just have to book and then they will come and collect. You can buy a new sharps bin from Amazon or an online medical supplies company.

WeAllHaveWings · 16/04/2025 16:04

You can buy them on Amazon.

Look at your local authority website to see if they have any arrangements for sharps disposal. Or ask your GP, or local pharmacies.

I am on insulin so needs to use needles. My local council would only let me set up an account for collecting sharps with a signed form from my GP.

oatmilkisntsobad · 16/04/2025 18:41

Thanks all for your advice. I’ll ask my local pharmacy as council here also need a gp referral and god only knows if I’ll ever get one of those - would have to be able to get an appointment first 🤣
I’ll buy a new one online but do think it’s a bit of a cheek that Med Express happily take £200 plus postage for the injections but don’t keep supplying sharps bins! I wonder if it’s the same with all online pharmacies

Mine are the same, I’m at a bit of a loss too.

Surely if they don’t provide some sort of facility for people to dispose of them (chargeable is fine), people are just going to wrap them up and put them in the general rubbish. How is that going to help? Very unfair to the people who will end up having to deal with it.

summerlovingvibes · 16/04/2025 18:49

Would be interested to know if Voy supply new bins too - I'm just getting to the end of mine and it hadn't occurred to me to start thinking about replacement!

MissEloiseBridgerton · 16/04/2025 18:59

Pharmacies in my area will dispose of sharps bins. Not sure if they would replace it though.

bugalugs45 · 16/04/2025 19:03

how many needles does it take to fill ? Just out of interest , I got 3 sharps bins and not even filled 1 yet .. been on MJ 6 months

SilenceInside · 16/04/2025 19:15

Asda and Zava both ask you if you need a sharps bin each time you order and include it at no extra cost if you do. (At least it was no extra cost last time I checked).

I’ve been using Mounjaro for 40 weeks and just thinking that I might need to get the sharps bin collected soon. I have a 1 litre SharpsGuard one, but maybe people are being supplied with smaller ones.

I am 42 weeks in and my compact 0.25L sharps bin is only 3/4 full. I think some people put their pens in even though the bins say contaminated sharps only. Or they might have fixed needle syringes in there too which take up more space.

oatmilkisntsobad · 16/04/2025 22:04

To be fair my DH accidentally closed and locked mine before it was filled 🙄

Interesting! I hadn’t checked Asda for buying mj from but will do for my next one

@oatmilkisntsobad I've just checked on Zava and they charge £1.99 for a sharps bin if you add it to your order. I've also checked my Asda account and they charge £1.50 for a sharps bin. So, not quite free, but certainly cheap.

I swapped from Asda to Zava because Asda were getting really expensive, and they use Zava to fulfill their orders anyway. Zava are always cheaper direct than Asda are, and they always have a £20 off discount code for repeat orders. Asda don't do repeat order discounts. So, I would recommend Zava over Asda!

IHateMozzies · 16/04/2025 22:21

Our council collect them and leave a replacement on collection.

@summerlovingvibes Voy will send you a new sharps bin if/when you need one. I just called Customer Services and it arrived the very next day.

oatmilkisntsobad · 16/04/2025 22:43

@SilenceInsidethanks!

I’ve never heard of Voy but will be looking them up for my next order. Thanks @HundredMilesAnHour

@oatmilkisntsobadmonj.co.uk will show you a list of pharmacies you can order from. Be aware voy is a subscription service so check out what that involves and if that isnwhat you are looking for, they are also one of the more expensive providers unless you get codes/referrals.

ThirdStorm · 17/04/2025 08:23

MedExpress have changed their tune, I've been with them 12 months and I have been sent 8 sharps bins. No idea what to do with them as I'm yet to fill up my first one! ha!

Some councils offer a service: https://www.gov.uk/request-clinical-waste-collection

Request clinical waste collection

Arrange for a collection of clinical waste - for items like used syringes, drugs, pharmaceuticals and surgical waste

You can prise it back open with a screwdriver. One of mine got closed during transport.

unsync · 17/04/2025 09:22

@SilenceInside I always get at least 10% off at Asda every time. They are struggling with 12.5mg and 15mg supplies at the moment though.

SilenceInside · 17/04/2025 09:25

@unsync how do you get a 10% off? I’ve never had any discount codes from them. I told them that I was moving supplier when they asked why I hadn’t reordered in a while, and nothing. Not interested in keeping me as a customer it would seem.

unsync · 17/04/2025 09:34

@SilenceInside They just email them to me. I get sent a 'time to reorder', then a week after, I get a discount code. They also sent one when it was my birthday.

I have just swapped though as they were out of stock for instore pickup, so changed to Superdrug, and got 20% off there. It is odd as they both use Zava, so presumably comes through the same system.

SilenceInside · 17/04/2025 09:52

Huh, I always got the "time to reorder"emails, but never a discount one.
