You know something?

I'm in size 12/14 clothes now.

But my BMI is still 32.

There are women on the other MJ threads, who start off with a BMI of less than the level mine currently is. Which is fine, of course.

But it doesn't compute in my head.
At this rate I'll be a size 10, and still be in the OBESE category of BMI.
It doesn't make sense.

Edited

In my early 20s a normal BMI was between 25 and 30, then for some reason this was changed. Honestly if you fit into a 12/14 size clothes, you’re fine. That’s what I was around BMI 28 back in the day and I was fit and healthy. You might have more muscle and weigh a bit more, which gives you a higher BMI. It’s nonsense apart from a very high BMI is bad and a very low one is also bad. I’m aiming for 11-12 stone and my BMI would only just be out the obese category but given I’m off the scale right now, it would be massively better for me. I always say I’ll be a skeleton in my grave and still have size 14 hips 🤣

Kay2000 · 18/04/2025 22:38

@SilenceInside congratulations on getting into the 13 stone bracket, that’s a huge achievement. I slipped into the 19 bracket today for the first time in years, onwards and downwards!

I also go out regularly with friends for eating out.

I'm keeping weightloss to myself and saying I don't feel too hungry,so ordering small.

I check the menu beforehand, so I know what I'm ordering and I don't feel tempted by the menu or by other people's orders.
I've never been a salad girl. I usually order a starter or a side or two instead of the main meal. Diet coke or sparkling water.

This keeps me within calories.
Order first so you're not tempted to change your mind when other people order.
Ask for doggie bag if you can't finish
No dessert (maybe coffee instead).

GnomeDePlume · 19/04/2025 06:37

I have only eaten out once since starting on mounjaro.

(Not avoiding it, just don't have much of a social life)

I ordered what I fancied and was shocked by what I fancied. In the past I would have been looking to discretely maximise the volume of food. Instead I ordered food because it sounded tasty, how much there would be didn't matter.

Mounjaro has opened me up to enjoying food more not less.

eibbed999 · 19/04/2025 08:09

5th weigh in today, a day later than normal as we've been away. 2lbs down despite having eaten out three times in the last few days - and even when you order carefully, it's not quite the same as preparing your own food is it? 2lbs is great, I'll take that - anything as long as it's going down.

SW: 307lbs
CW: 288lbs

Can I join please? I started MJ on Weds. It is really inspiring hearing about the losses everyone is making. I just hope I have the stamina for that!

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 19/04/2025 13:03

Welcome! I've dipped in and out of this group and posted tons before I started as I was so anxious. But it's amazing now just over 3 months in and over 2 stone down to see it's really possible. 😍Im going to still be morbidly obese a while... But this thread is such a fab place.

Good luck. Have you got any side effects? I feel like I've been filling my bingo card with them but it's all been manageable and okay even though I panicked each time.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 19/04/2025 14:48

Hello @Stoufer and welcome to the thread.

I hope it all goes well for you. I've lost 7 stone and my life is so much easier now.

I've still got 2 or 3st to lose but I know it'll happen.

Stoufer · 19/04/2025 14:54

@FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden I had a bit of a headache the next morning when I woke up, and a bit of a metallic taste in my mouth, but those both passed quite quickly. I am going through a bit of a stressful time at the moment, so am trying to be pragmatic about things (still feeling urge to stress eat quite a bit…)

Stoufer · 19/04/2025 14:55

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne 7st - that is amazing! You must feel so much better. I hope I can get there too, it just feels like such a long way off for me..

@Kay2000 Fantastic news slipping into 19!

and @SilenceInside - 13! That's incredible :)

You've both inspired me so much I'm so glad its all happening for you!

It did for me, too.
It's taken 16 months so it wasn't quick, but it was constant.

SilenceInside · 19/04/2025 17:10

@eibbed999 a 2lb loss is a great step on the way, especially on a week where you've eaten out a few times.

@Stoufer some times in the last 40 odd weeks I've been bored of it all, frustrated, grumpy about the length of time it has all been taking. But, however I've been feeling, over time the weight just keeps coming off. Even if one week it's staying the same, or a pound or two gain, or only a pound or a 1/2 pound loss. The overall trajectory is downwards and I've been able to maintain that throughout. I've never managed this length of time on a calorie controlled diet of any type before.

Stoufer · 19/04/2025 17:15

@SilenceInside Thanks for this, it is great to hear. I know the alternative is do nothing, and a year down the line things will be the same, or worse, so I just have to buckle down. It’s just tricky when there are unhealthy things in the house, and today (3 days after my first jab) I am definitely feeling like I have less willpower…!

How do you know when you should increase the dose? The instructions from Asda said that you could increase after 4 weeks, but I have got no clear idea if whether that is a good thing to do, or not, if I have a lot to lose (and potentially doing WLI for the next year or two)? Does anyone have any thoughts on moving up or staying on the same dose? Thanks all :)

SilenceInside · 19/04/2025 18:03

I increased from 2.5mg to 5mg after 4 weeks. I think possibly with hindsight I might have stayed on 2.5mg for another pen, because I had high suppression and was losing plenty of weight. I moved up because that was the standard dosing schedule, so I went with it. I had some side effects on the second week of 5mg, but I had already ordered the 7.5mg again because that was the standard dosing schedule. Instead of taking the 7.5mg straight away, I did two lots of 5mg from the 7.5mg pen, then a 6.75 before doing a 7.5mg. I’ve stuck with 7.5mg since then. I would only move up a dose if I didn’t have much suppression at all and if I wasn’t losing any weight, across the 4 weeks of using a pen.

Stoufer · 19/04/2025 18:20

@SilenceInside thanks so much for this, it’s really helpful :)

TragicMuse · 19/04/2025 18:50

I am SO tired today. It’s week 4 of 5mg so I should be used to it but it’s knocked me silly today!

To the point that I’m wondering whether to leave off a dose when I go abroad in a couple of weeks - it’s only a short trip and I don’t want to be knackered and nauseous for half of it…

eibbed999 · 19/04/2025 19:29

@TragicMuse that is so tough - can you tweak your days if it's only a short trip? Or is it unpredictable when in the week the side effects will kick in?

Move up the doses.
I did, every four weeks.

Stoufer · 19/04/2025 20:00

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne thanks for this :)

Another weigh in another meagre half pound loss. I know a loss is a loss but I don’t know why it’s going so slow for me. 12lbs in 10 weeks is pathetic when I have 10st to lose. It’s getting to me too. 😞

I thought about that but I’m leaving on
Thursday and back on Tuesday and I can only get my day pulled back to Wednesday so I’d be hit by it as I arrived…

I’m going to see if Dramamine helps with the nausea. But if not I’ll leave it for a week and pick up when I get back!

What dose are you on?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 19/04/2025 22:45

What dose are you on?

I am on 7.5. I have gone up a dose each pen so 4wks2.5, 4 wks 5 and I’m on week 3 of 7.5.
my only side effect is tiredness and (blessedly) less desire for carbs, so I know it’s doing something. I am exercising 2-3 times a week (strength training - light or swimming) and I am eating in a deficit of about 500 cals under my tdee. I would say my cals are easier to stick to because of my reduced desire for carbs so I’m under no illusion I would be struggling even more without it.

eibbed999 · 20/04/2025 06:32

@TragicMuse best of luck - hope it's not too bad!
