Scary side effects to Mounjaro.

ok so maybe not included in most people that take this injection but just asking out of curiosity.

Tuesday night late on around 11pm I started my first dose of Maunjaro starting weight was 12 stone 11.
Today I’m 12 stone 3 so it is quite a big drop in pounds just 4 days really.

I understand side effects I have suffered from feeling sick headache no feeling to eat what so ever since then. You’re lucky I’ve even had the equivalent to a full meal since then.

what I’ve had since then is: Banana, 2X Toasties (eating half of both portions) plenty of water. And one bar of chocolate as my body starting craving for sugar yesterday evening.

now the rest of the side effects have been ok and managed but it’s a weird felling of not being hungry that I just couldn’t explain to anyone but this is the scary part day 2 right up until last night all I could really explain the problem was like a (demon in my body) my eyes were really big sticking out and my pupils were massive I felt like I was in a world of my own constantly and completely zoned out. Even my mum looked at me and was checking in often as she said I didn’t look right or look or seem like myself?

has anyone else felt like this? Today I feel back to my normal self?

No I done it properly turned the dose to 1 and inject.

I was replying to a different poster, not suggesting that you've used the pen incorrectly.

I haven’t deliberately starved myself it’s hard to force yourself to actually eat when you can’t stomach putting anything to your mouth without wanting to be sick.

it’s very easy to say force yourself to eat but when your in the position where you have no way of even forcing food.

Not deliberately, but the outcome is the same - you have been starving yourself. Take the mounjaro out of the equation and how would you expect to feel of you hadn't eaten all week? Fucking awful!
It is hard if suppression is particularly high. I really struggle to eat on the first couple of days of each dose, but you can see now how bad not eating makes you feel. Little and often is the way to go if you can't manage full meals. Have half the banana and wait an hour for the other half. Eat things like yoghurt or soup that are easy to get down. Get good calories in with what you do eat, things like avocado.

If you cannot eat much sugar and carbs is what you need, not protein. Protein is good for controlling your appetite, filling you up, and protecting muscle while you lose but if you literally cannot eat you need glucose, which comes from carbs and sugar.

I use Pharmacy 2 U for asthma medication, OP. As far as I can tell they're legit. I'd stop using it and make an appointment with your GP. Maybe ask about starting Orlistat if you need a bit help to lose weight.

I never said you did it deliberately.

Anyway, feeling sick is most likely due to not eating.

Feeling sick is one of the most common side effects of maunjaro? @thesaskedminger

It's weird at the beginning. My suppression was insanely high at 2.5 to start with (but your body quickly adapts - I've just restarted at 2.5 after a break for a medical test and I have barely felt it). It sounds like your blood sugar was very low and your electrolytes were off - I need regular calories and dehydration supplements to feel on on Mounjaro, otherwise I feel very spacey and strange. Dehydration treatment is a game changer for me - try some, or maybe even some coconut water with a pinch of salt in it.

It's also one of the most common side effects of not eating any food.

I'm not sure why you are being so defensive, if you think it's the Mounjaro just stop taking it. I was trying to be helpful by suggesting you have barely eaten and it's more likely to be that.

I’m not been defensive but I have read the majority of the threads about mounjaro and it says feeling sick is the most common.

Probably because people are not eating properly.

The Mounjaro Kwikpen is designed to deliver a standard dose, you can't overdose using the pen. Unless you deliberately decide to do more than one injection at a time.

Your friend sounds like she was using something other than properly prescribed Mounjaro which would be in the Kwikpen. Vials of who knows what obtained from a beautician or a dodgy website perhaps?

Mmm yes it was a vial. I felt so worried about her as she was very very unwell. She's OK now but lost a stone very very quickly.

Has she stopped using whatever that was now? It could have been literally anything.

SilenceInside · 18/01/2025 19:50

@Theuniversalshere1 your friend was injecting an unknown substance. The incorrect dosage is one of a whole host of issues with that. Some of these vials of dodgy things have turned out to be insulin. Incredibly dangerous. I hope your friend has stopped doing this now.

Yes when she realised she was overdosing. She was doing double dose! I was so worried but she's totally fine now.

SilenceInside · 18/01/2025 20:03

Who knows what she was injecting though, it could be literally any liquid. "Double dosing" of some random substance bought from a dodgy supplier of fake meds is not the main issue!

PinkArt · 18/01/2025 20:05

Theuniversalshere1 · 18/01/2025 19:59

Ok good. It's not just that the quality was wrong though, she has no idea what was on those vials. Some people have been sold insulin as mounjaro and I imagine there are stories about far, far worse that will come out still. It could have been poisonous, could have been something she had an allergy to.
Please make sure she understands what a risk that was so she never considers it again. Almost all of the stories about people who have died or had terrible medical outcomes have been people buying dodgy vials that contained all manner of evil.

InfoSecInTheCity · 18/01/2025 20:07

The problem is that you've stopped eating. You need to eat even if you don't feel hungry, you can tell the time so you know how long it's been between meals, make yourself some food and eat it. 5 or 6 tiny meals/snacks if you can't stomach 3 full meals.

  • A bowl of soup
  • Some crackers
  • a few slices of cooked chicken
  • an apple
....

You need at minimum 800 calories a day, that is the least that you would be advised to eat if on a very low calorie diet as part of a medical weight management program so make that your baseline minimum amount per day and eat it even if you dont feel like it.

soupfiend · 18/01/2025 20:08

You sound a bit over the top to be honest

If you had a cold or the flu or was feeling off colour, you would probably have the same sort of intake and not be panicking about not having had enough to eat or 'low blood sugar' or any of this.

notthedressiwanted · 18/01/2025 20:39

Hey Op,
Get some protein shakes in forbif you can't stomach food first thing also try hydration tabs in water.
I felt sick initially but then started craving fruit and salad stuff.
Am currently on 7.5 after starting 5 months ago and am now within reach of a healthy BMI. I am a shorty too!

Difference is also that I don’t have a flu or not feeling well i injected a liquid in me and took very bad side effects and lost quite a bit a weight in a few days I doubt I would lose that amount just been ‘unwell’

Everybody takes different to medication and side effects different maybe I was just the unlucky one with the side effects I have I really do think the rules should be much strict om these who should and shouldn’t get them I wouldn’t like a 18 year old to suffer what I did in the last few days.

It doesn't sound like you've had bad side effects from the meds though. The meds worked exactly as expected by suppressing your appetite.

Instead of demonstrating a small amount of common sense and ensuring you had some basic level of nutrition, even just lucozade, you ate basically nothing for several days and then wonder why you felt spaced out.

soupfiend · 18/01/2025 21:00

You havent lost weight as in fat or muscle in that short time, you have lost liquid, and some fat maybe.
You're not going to come to any harm over such a small amount of time, Im saying you're over the top because you're over worrying its not proportionate, you wont come to harm by having a low intake over a few days like this.

Have some soup, have some electrolyte intake, make sure you're drinking enough and you'll be fine

And yes I lost about half a stone in September with a bad cold and many many years ago I lost a stone in a week with a kidney stone. Not nice, but survivable.

Weepixie · 18/01/2025 21:01

Op, I’m quite often shocked by how little some people eat on mounjaro. It’s almost like a badge of honour to have a protein shake for breakfast, 3 slices of sushi for lunch and some crackers and cheese for dinner. But that’s not how those of us who are on Mounjaro are supposed to eat. We’re supposed to have the correct amount of calories every day so we are healthy whilst on this journey and 600 a day doesn’t cut it. I’m on between 1450 and 1600 per day and it’s enough for me to lose weight according to my height and build etc but even though there are days when I could forget to eat or deliberately skip meals it’s something I won’t do because yes, it may make my weight loss faster but it would be so unhealthy I get those calories into me regardless of anything else - and it’s not difficult.

Nausea can be a side effect of mounjaro but if you take anti sickness medication it will pass and you can eat.

thesaskedminger · 18/01/2025 21:08

You definitely would have though because your weight loss, which will mostly be water, is related to what you ate, not why you ate it.
