Scary side effects to Mounjaro.

ok so maybe not included in most people that take this injection but just asking out of curiosity.

Tuesday night late on around 11pm I started my first dose of Maunjaro starting weight was 12 stone 11.
Today I’m 12 stone 3 so it is quite a big drop in pounds just 4 days really.

I understand side effects I have suffered from feeling sick headache no feeling to eat what so ever since then. You’re lucky I’ve even had the equivalent to a full meal since then.

what I’ve had since then is: Banana, 2X Toasties (eating half of both portions) plenty of water. And one bar of chocolate as my body starting craving for sugar yesterday evening.

now the rest of the side effects have been ok and managed but it’s a weird felling of not being hungry that I just couldn’t explain to anyone but this is the scary part day 2 right up until last night all I could really explain the problem was like a (demon in my body) my eyes were really big sticking out and my pupils were massive I felt like I was in a world of my own constantly and completely zoned out. Even my mum looked at me and was checking in often as she said I didn’t look right or look or seem like myself?

has anyone else felt like this? Today I feel back to my normal self?

You need to force yourself to eat something, little and often, and keep you calories up to prevent hypoglycemia, it was likely very low blood sugar due to lack of food. The first couple of weeks can be tough if suppression is too high, but it gets easier. Track calories and food to make sure you are eating enough - aim for a minimum of 800 calories, preferably 1000.

Try to find nutritionally dense high calorie foods when suppression is high and make the most of days where you can eat more - track your calories over a week - most apps like MFP will let you do this. I found snacking on nuts between small meals helpful - not too filling but could get some calories in easily - I liked the Graze Chilli and Lime mixed nuts.

Be aware of the fact that suppression hits you hard and that you do not need to move up doses each pen, as some supplier seem to imply, if suppression is staying this high.

God no, that’s awful. Seems like you’ve reacted terribly, that’s not remotely normal. I’d come off immediately, poor you.

Jabtastic · 18/01/2025 14:11

I had very bad side effects and stopped but yours sound really alarming. Definitely stop and seek medical advice if you can't eat. Maybe try diarrhoea drinks or something eg dioralyte (sp?)

SilenceInside · 18/01/2025 14:18

You need to eat something at meal times even if you're not hungry for it. Your symptoms sound like seriously low blood sugar, which isn't a surprise given that you've basically not eaten a proper meal for 4 days.

DeliciousApples · 18/01/2025 14:31

Losing 8 pounds in a week seems like too much.

Are you sure you're on the correct dose? Your bmi should be high to start with, how high was yours?

Drink water or you'll dehydrate. Eat small regular meals. I don't think it's doing you good tbh it sounds like the side effects are a bit much.

Are you going to keep on it?

HansHolbein · 18/01/2025 14:32

What did your prescriber say?

Some ideas if you want to keep trying, obviously ignore if you don't -

Speak to your provider about your symptoms and food intake to get confirmation your issue was probably due to very low blood sugar and ask what they recommend.

consider if you try again this week if you could be more mindful to eat more even when you don't feel hungry (and drink water - try to do 2L a day - to make sure you are hydrated) to avoid a repeat. Log everything to make sure you are eating enough.

Consider a lower dose than 2.5mg. Turning to the number 1 takes 60 clicks and gives you a full 2.5mg dose. You can turn 30 clicks instead and take a 1.25mg dose instead and build up your tolerance more slowly.

Good luck with whatever you decide, obviously your health comes first and if you are not comfortable continuing don't.

FlappingMadly · 18/01/2025 15:36

Sounds scary! Stay off the chocolate and up your protein. And have you had your blood sugar checked?

thesaskedminger · 18/01/2025 16:15

Sounds like you have starved yourself, it's no surprise you have reacted badly. Try a meal plan for a week to ensure you eat properly and get the correct amount of calories to fuel your body.

PinkArt · 18/01/2025 16:19

I think you're right not to continue if you're having bad side effects but I'd also consider how much is directly related to mounjaro and how much is down to the fact you've had pretty much one meal, with virtually no nutrients, in the last four days. Of course your blood sugars dropped and you zoned out if you were running on empty to that extent. You're trying to fuel your body on a banana, a toastie and a bar of chocolate.

JoanCollinsDiva · 18/01/2025 16:32

You say today you feel back to your normal self OP so maybe the worst has passed? I took my first dose last night and haven't been able to eat anything today but I'm going to force down a healthy dinner later. I mean, the whole point of it IS appetite suppression so surely this just shows it's working? See how you feel on Tuesday and then decide.

Frequency · 18/01/2025 16:56

Are you quite short OP?

I'm average height and about your weight and BMI is 26, so not nearly high enough for WLI to be safe for me.

If you're using it from a dodgy supplier who is not contacting your GP, has not asked for photographic evidence of your weight, you're asking for trouble.

You could be injecting rat poison into yourself for all you know.

I'm 5ft 3 and my BMI is 30.5 at 12st 4lbs, which isn't really that short, so it's entirely possible her BMI is a within the limits for prescription.

It's not supposed to enable a person to starve themselves. It should help you to stay in a calorie deficit but you need to eat well on these injections and that means eating enough to properly and sensibly fuel yourself. It's not just about appetite suppression, it's about regulation of gut hormones so that you can eat a healthy, nourishing and sustaining diet with all of your systems running effectively.

Theuniversalshere1 · 18/01/2025 17:32

A friend on it was giving herself the wrong dosage. It may be that and very.common if not preset for you. Are you measuring yourself for dosages?

The Mounjaro Kwikpen is designed to deliver a standard dose, you can't overdose using the pen. Unless you deliberately decide to do more than one injection at a time.

Your friend sounds like she was using something other than properly prescribed Mounjaro which would be in the Kwikpen. Vials of who knows what obtained from a beautician or a dodgy website perhaps?

The only way to do this is deliberately. The pen comes with four measured doses. You turn the dial to 1, for one dose, and inject. For the wrong dosage she deliberately ignored that.

I used Pharmacy 2 U.

yeah I’m about 5ft2 probably.

they did ask for ID and photo of my full body.

i know i was thinking that myself we don’t really know exactly what we are injecting.

On days I can't eat I have protein yogurts and shakes just to get some calories in. Easy to go down.

I haven’t deliberately starved myself it’s hard to force yourself to actually eat when you can’t stomach putting anything to your mouth without wanting to be sick.

it’s very easy to say force yourself to eat but when your in the position where you have no way of even forcing food.

Mysticmaiden2024 · 18/01/2025 17:59

Toast banana and chocolate is all carbs and sugar. You really need protein, eggs for breakfast, meat or fish or vegan protein for lunch and dinner. Take vitamins too. I'd understand you not wanting to take it again, focus on eating little and often.

I never said you did it deliberately.

Anyway, feeling sick is most likely due to not eating.
