Mounjaro, 10st or more to lose.

BookishBabe · 09/12/2024 05:43

Hello fellow mounjaro users or people thinking about starting. I have seen there is a thread for people needing to lose 5 stone plus, but even there I felt a little bit big.
I need to lose 12 stone, and even then my BMI would be 33.
Alot of people seem to be starting mounjaro with a starting BMI of 33, so I think it sometimes feels better to be among people who have the same amount to lose, 12 stone feels so daunting and scary. It's going to be a long battle.

This is my final chance before weight loss surgery, which I really don't want to do or risk.
I am 32 years old and have 2 young sons (7 and 5), one is disabled and the other is struggling and is on a reduced timetable at school. They need me to be around for a very long time and at the moment I feel like I am failing them.

I started calorie counting/a calorie controlled diet last Monday (2nd December). I was thinking about putting it off because of Christmas, but I can always come up with an excuse, so I decided to just go for it.

I weighed in at 27st and 7lbs.
At 5 ft 8 that gave me a BMI of 58.5!!!

I had some blood tests in March which showed I was prediabetic, I have done precisely nothing since then to do anything about it and have buried my head in the sand!

My mounjaro was delivered Tuesday afternoon and I took my first jab on Wednesday morning. I think its working slightly now, but I didn't feel any different for the first 3 days, but I'm either used to eating less (unlikely in 7 days) or the mounjaro has started to take effect.

So, one week in, calorie controlled diet every day, trying to get lots of protein, drinking loads, a few days of mounjaro in my system.

Weigh day time,

drum roll

26st and 11lbs!!!! 🥳

10lbs gone. I am very happy with that. I used to be able to lose 15lbs in a week when I was younger, but I was much more active back then and thanks to being so overweight I do struggle with activity.

BMI is now 57! So I've lost 1.5 on my BMI. Fingers crossed I can keep this going, I just need the number to keep going down! I'm really hoping I can be in a healthier and happier place with myself.

So, long post over.

Does anyone with 10st or more to lose want to join me here?

I know its daunting but I think if anyone feels like me, this is probably our last hope before surgery and our health is probably starting to decline or already has due to the weight we have on our bodies.

@SianyEvs40 I remember feeling tired and just couldn’t be bothered to do anything when I first started, it didn’t last long for me though. I get a niggling headache after I jab but nothing that can’t be managed. The frustrating thing with this little miracle is that no two people seem to be the same, our journeys all have the same goal though!

There is quite a way between BMI of 50 and healthy weight though. Why would having Doctors input be bad?

I really do worry about the lack of checks from some of the online pharmacies (I know not all places). My niece has just managed to get a prescription - she is a size 8 but wants to get to a size 6, because they didn't request photos or ID.

I am also concerned that so many don't let the GP know that WLI have been prescribed. Your GP should always know all prescribed medication.

I'm not against having a doctor's input at all, but I've been on a weight management waiting list for coming up to two years and have had no help so far, hence doing this myself even though I can't really afford it! I guess my issue is having to wait for the input while my weight creeps ever upwards.
At the moment I want to start losing weight, once I've made a decent start with that I will look into seeking further support in the form of talking therapy of some kind to help change my relationship with food etc
I am dismayed that someone who is already a size 8 has been able to get their hands on these injections and I'm becoming a little worried it could have been from the supplier I decided to use as I've not yet been asked for any proof of my weight and I was given the option about if my GP was informed (I chose for them to let them know on my behalf)

I suspect the GP Input they will request is "do you think it's safe for this person" - so hopefully they would get a quick response.

I'm going to ask my nieces partner if she knows who my niece is using.. because the more people abuse it, the harder it becomes for those that need it.

JusteanBiscuits · 29/01/2025 10:46

This morning I tried on a pair of size 20 jeans from whitestuff (via Vinted!).

THEY FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started at top end of 24 - where I could wear a 24 but they were tight.

I'm off on holiday to Majorca in 3 weeks, so looking for some nicer clothes for that I think. Having spent the last 10 years wearing at least knee length dresses over jeans, I think having some tops that are shorter (not SHORT! I can't think of words to describe the length I mean, but lets go with vagina length 😂) would be nice.

Iwouldratherbesinging · 29/01/2025 13:37

@JusteanBiscuits amazing! I’m so tempted to buy some size 22s to stash away and try on monthly.
I know exactly what you mean by vagina length tops, I may have to steal that description 😆 I also live in knee length tunics or dresses over jeans and leggings

White stuff sizing is quite forgiving, so always buy that as first in a new size!

I complained, it feels really recently, about losing weight but not dress size. But the dress size side has caught up 😁

It, again, took me a week to even open the parcel before trying them on.

I honestly think it should be prescribed only with the agreement of your GP, as they do or can get to know the person. I’m aware GPs don’t want or need more work, but a one off weight check by the nurse and a GP has to tick a form to say they’re supportive of this patient would stop the abuses I see happening on other threads. I’ve stopped reading them as I get so annoyed! The same people who join WW to lose a stone to look nicer in their bikini and talk about how disgusting they look, with no awareness of me sat there 10 stone heavier are on here, trying to get drugs at BMI 26 or less, or (the worst so far) 4 weeks post C-section! I read an article earlier this week that told of a girl who’d got diagnosed with osteoporosis after a year on weight loss drugs, yet she was not obese in the first place. It’s fuelled by celebrities who aren’t fat going on them, or in the case of the young mum, get a tummy tuck alongside their C-section.
Rant over 😂
I hope you get ok’d soon.

Tainiz · 29/01/2025 16:43

Hi, can I join in please? I'm just starting on this long journey and have over 10st to lose. My starting weight is 21st 8lbs and BMI is 50.3.

Like others, I've tried every diet going over the years, lost a bit, got bored/hungry and gave up and put it all back on. And more. I'm really hoping this is going to work this time.

One question, for those people at around my weight and BMI, how many calories are you going down to each day please? I've used the TDEE calculator and it's telling me I should be having 1840kcal per day in order to achieve medium weight loss, 2lb per week. This seems a bit high to me. I've not had my first weigh-in yet so I can't say if it's working so far or not but would love to hear what others are doing.

SilenceInside · 29/01/2025 17:30

Hi @Tainiz nice to see another new starter. I had similar stats to you when I started, I was just about 22st and BMI of 50.

What was your calculated TDEE, for maintaining? Presumably the 1840 figure is 500 calories (or more?) below that?

GnomeDePlume · 29/01/2025 18:17

@Tainiz I started at a BMI of 53.5. At my latest weigh in this was down to 49.6 with a 10kg weightloss after 9 weeks.

I'm not calorie counting. My approach has been:

  • significantly cut portion size, about half what I was previously eating
  • drink when I feel hungry then only eat if that doesn't quench hunger pangs
  • stop eating breakfast
  • swap out milky coffee for black tea

I will need to start counting calories when that stops working. I'm T2 diabetic and mounjaro is working for me.

Thank you.

The maintenance figure is 2340, so 500 above that, but I just think that 2340 is high for maintenance. Obviously I'll see how it goes and if I do lose weight on 1840 then that's great. Just seems a bit too good to be true.😃

SilenceInside · 29/01/2025 20:04

I had a pretty immediate response to my first injection and had a lot of appetite suppression straight away. I couldn't have managed to eat 1800 calories, and was more like 1200 or sometimes lower on the highest suppression days. I don't usually calorie count, but did for a few days here and there to check where I was at.

Those of us with higher starting weights will have higher TDEEs which does give you the opportunity to create a bigger calorie deficit at least initially, whilst still eating a reasonable amount of calories.

Kay2000 · 29/01/2025 20:15

@Tainiz Welcome 🤗. I’m on week 4, starting weight 22st, BMI 53 and I’m not counting calories as yet. After decades of diets I know pretty much if I cut out snacks and eat 2 or 3 x day, I lose weight. So that’s what I’ve been doing and it’s been incredibly easy so far. I can’t even let hunger dictate it, as I’m not really “stomach hungry” (I even forgot to eat one day until 3pm 🤷‍♀️🤪). If I stop losing weight I’ll either up my exercise - which I’m hoping will happen naturally anyway as I get thinner - or count calories. And again, from doing that previously know I lose weight on around 1500 cals a day. I just couldn’t stick to that whereas I’m now finding it easier to eat much less. Some days I’m only having lunch and dinner, and I’m still only on the starter dosage. I don’t want to count calories long term as I fear it’ll bring out my diet mentality but if I need to check I’m not overeating I will temporarily.

WafflingDreamer · 29/01/2025 20:25

I have counted calories on and off (clearly more off!!) for years and I quite enjoy it, I also weigh every day.

I started at 21st 9lb in October and am now nearly 3st down. I aim for 1500 calories a day but generally average just under at around 1350/1400 a day over the week. I make sure I have at least 100g protein and 30g fibre every day. I'm losing 2lb a week on this along with 7000 steps a day and a Joe Wicks 15 minute workouts every other day.

Iwouldratherbesinging · 29/01/2025 22:32

Hi @Tainiz, I don’t calorie count either, was 21+ stone when I started 5:2 fasting, so one small meal with protein and veg two days a week, 19 stone 2lbs when I started MJ. I ate fairly healthy meals anyway, it was all the extras that caused the issue, the chocolate, crisps, desserts, constant need to snack and portions big enough to feed 2 people!
My portion sizes have drastically reduced and all the extras have stopped, if I want some chocolate or a small dessert I’ll have it at the weekend. I still do the 5:2 fasting and for now it’s working. I want this to be my new normal and the thought of having to calorie count everything that passes my lips isn’t sustainable (for me). After years and years of dieting I have a pretty good idea of guesstimating, I’m over 2.5 stone down so it’s working and I’m elated!

GnomeDePlume · 30/01/2025 06:04

Morning! Weigh in and jab (7.5) day for me.

SW 137kg BMI 53.5
CW 125kg BMI 48.8
TW 60kg BMI 23.4

So, 12kg in 10 weeks. I don't think it has made much difference yet. Clothes are a little looser but I make my own tops so have always veered towards making them on the large size.

It would be nice to get to a point where I no longer need to look for plus size patterns but that is a long way off.

Diabetes nurse is aware of the weight loss and has recommended me to go up to 10mg injections. Mj is starting to look like a bit of a wonder drug for T2 diabetics.

Newshoesnewname · 30/01/2025 06:10

Morning all

A question for those of you who had moderate to severe diarrhea.

Once the episode subsided, did you ever get it again with subsequent jabs?

If it does happen to me I can be off work/ work from home with a "tummy bug" but that won't wash on a regular basis.

Grumpyoldthing · 30/01/2025 08:15

Hi guys how are you all doing?

week three done - 10lb lost in three weeks and a bmi point down .

gone for another 2.5 pen for the next month, as suppression is good .

sw 305.8lb
cw 295.6lb

no side effects long may that last

next mini target 285 , as that’s what I was the year before Covid and the last time I flew - we have a holiday booked in August, so plane seats are starting to be on my mind !

Agreed! if I don't hear anything soon I will put in a request to my GP about it, but I imagine it will be told I need to wait for the weight management team to be in touch which I expect will happen in around 18 months time.

As it happens I had my weight and bloodpressure checked by a nurse on Tuesday in preparation for a menopause specialsit (telephone) appointment yesterday and I did mention trying to get onto Mounjaro to both the nurse and the menopause specialist so I'm definately not trying to keep it a secret!

It is sickening that people who really don't need it are able to get their hands on it and sad that this could mean that people with a definite need may not be able to get it. It has always worried me how so many people are unhappy with the way they look and/or their weight even when they are perfectly fine, but that is a reflection of the society we live in today. It is also upseting when they discount people like you or I who genuinely would be a whole lot happier and healthier if they could lose 10 stone and then continue to complain how they have put on half a stone!

I've been taking Mounjaro for 6 months and have had two instances of diarrhea, only the first of which was difficult to deal with. That was when I was on 5mg. It shouldn't be a frequent occurrence.

I started at the same weight as you and have lost about a stone since starting 2.5 weeks ago. I don't calorie count but a typical day goes as follows. Breakfast - one small slice wholemeal toast and two eggs or Greek yoghurt, berries and a few nuts. Lunch either homemade soup with lentils or a small jacket potato, salad and tuna, dinner usually meat or fish and veg. I have had some days where I've craved a snack around 4pm and have had to give in.

Hi there, are you taking MJ? I’m four months in and haven’t ever experienced diarrhoea, I’m the opposite and struggle to go at all.

Iwouldratherbesinging · 30/01/2025 22:39

@Grumpyoldthing, congrats on the loss! Airline seats used to terrify me, but the flight attendants don’t bat an eyelid when asking for an extender. I ask as I board now, I was mortified the first time…

I'm not calorie counting but eating upf free and definitely snacking a lot less.

But disappointing results wise as 0.9-1kg per week which I know is fine I had just hoped with 10 stone to lose it would start off faster! I start the 5 dose next week.

I haven't had diahrea but I've had fatigue and nausea and headaches. It's got better each jab but I'm expecting it back pen 2.

Airline seats-I flew last year and got used to just asking for a E extended and it was no big deal but I look forward to not needing it. And being able to go on roller coasters with the kids. And just not being the biggest person in the room all the time
