Mounjaro, 10st or more to lose.

BookishBabe · 09/12/2024 05:43

Hello fellow mounjaro users or people thinking about starting. I have seen there is a thread for people needing to lose 5 stone plus, but even there I felt a little bit big.
I need to lose 12 stone, and even then my BMI would be 33.
Alot of people seem to be starting mounjaro with a starting BMI of 33, so I think it sometimes feels better to be among people who have the same amount to lose, 12 stone feels so daunting and scary. It's going to be a long battle.

This is my final chance before weight loss surgery, which I really don't want to do or risk.
I am 32 years old and have 2 young sons (7 and 5), one is disabled and the other is struggling and is on a reduced timetable at school. They need me to be around for a very long time and at the moment I feel like I am failing them.

I started calorie counting/a calorie controlled diet last Monday (2nd December). I was thinking about putting it off because of Christmas, but I can always come up with an excuse, so I decided to just go for it.

I weighed in at 27st and 7lbs.
At 5 ft 8 that gave me a BMI of 58.5!!!

I had some blood tests in March which showed I was prediabetic, I have done precisely nothing since then to do anything about it and have buried my head in the sand!

My mounjaro was delivered Tuesday afternoon and I took my first jab on Wednesday morning. I think its working slightly now, but I didn't feel any different for the first 3 days, but I'm either used to eating less (unlikely in 7 days) or the mounjaro has started to take effect.

So, one week in, calorie controlled diet every day, trying to get lots of protein, drinking loads, a few days of mounjaro in my system.

Weigh day time,

drum roll

26st and 11lbs!!!! 🥳

10lbs gone. I am very happy with that. I used to be able to lose 15lbs in a week when I was younger, but I was much more active back then and thanks to being so overweight I do struggle with activity.

BMI is now 57! So I've lost 1.5 on my BMI. Fingers crossed I can keep this going, I just need the number to keep going down! I'm really hoping I can be in a healthier and happier place with myself.

So, long post over.

Does anyone with 10st or more to lose want to join me here?

I know its daunting but I think if anyone feels like me, this is probably our last hope before surgery and our health is probably starting to decline or already has due to the weight we have on our bodies.

@Grumpyoldthing I felt a bit despondent at first, I lost 3.7 lbs my first week, then 2.0lbs the second week, I was constantly comparing losses, and everyone saying ‘people who have more to loose will have greater losses’ and everyone was in agreement. The saying that keeps popping up ‘comparison is the theft of joy’ is so true!
I’ve kept a regular loss that averages out to 2.2lbs a week and as you said, it soon adds up! My biggest problem now is wishing the weeks away 😂

I came across an old pregnancy record card the other day, my first recorded weight was 14st 7lbs, that was almost 37 years ago and I thought I has disgustingly huge, oh how I dream of getting back to that weight!

I remember back when I was in my 20s tipping over 10st, being utterly disgusted at myself and attending Weight Watchers. My 53 year old self is so angry at younger me!!

needless to say, my goal now is 10st.

Weigh in/jab day for me too. I’ve lost another 4lbs this week, a total of 17lbs in 2 weeks. I’m over the moon!

That’s a bit too much in 2 weeks - are you eating enough?

Kay2000 · 24/01/2025 14:10

I’m thinking of changing to weighing myself monthly at the drs as my weight keeps fluctuating as much as 3lb from day to day and then I’m getting despondent. I’m not monitoring calories yet, just trying to avoid snacks and eat my meals. But yesterday I had a bad day in that I didn’t want to eat anything we had in the house and I couldn’t get out. Husband eventually took pity on me and went to the local Spa shop and we had a fish finger butty. But given the little I did eat yesterday, I shouldn’t have gone up 3lb today! My weight gain has always been sporadic. I’d stay the same for ages - months - even if I was trying to eat less, or eating whatever I liked. Then all of a sudden I’d shoot up half a stone. So I wonder if I’ll lose weight the same way and a monthly tracking might work better for me.

I was looking at the “what I eat in a day” thread yesterday and was a bit disheartened to see nearly everyone there is on diet rations, still very much in the diet mentality, which we know doesn’t work long term. Not many people can consistently eat less than 1000 calories long term, and many on that thread appear to be doing that. Another thread to stay away from, I thought it might help me when I didn’t know what to eat yesterday but all it did was trigger the old diet mentality in me which I then rebel against. I have to keep reminding myself that most people don’t have 10+ stone to lose and it’s a much quicker process for them, whereas I’m quite prepared to be on MJ for a long time and lose the weight permanently. And it’s very early days for me.

PinkArt · 24/01/2025 14:24

The jabs do only work alongside some sort of diet @Kay2000. I agree that 1000 cals a day isn't the way to go (although on my days with really strong suppression I've struggled to hit 1000 sometimes) but even with the amazing tool of the jabs a calorie deficit is required.
Are you weighing daily at the moment? Maybe switch to weekly first to see how that works? For me it's regular enough to see the bigger picture, without obsessing about how I'm half a pound lighter or heavier than yesterday when I slip into daily weighing.

WafflingDreamer · 24/01/2025 14:26

I find daily weighing really helpful as I can often see a correlation between what I've eaten or done and why I retain fluid. You've obviously not gained 3lb fat if you are eating in a deficit. Are you drinking a lot? I gain lots of water weight after work as I hold on to a lot of water from nit drinking enough. But you need to figure out what works for you.

The jabs do only work by helping you maintain a calorie deficit. I couldn't/wouldn't eat as little as 1000 calories but I know lots of people have to drop their calories low to lose weight. I'm always 1200-1500 depending on my suppression. But I weigh and track everything and am happy to commit to doing so for the rest of my life if I need to.

Kay2000 · 24/01/2025 14:37

I haven’t started weighing and counting yet, I fully intend to count them but wanted to settle in to the jabs first, it’s my 4th 2.5mg this Sunday. I’ll start monitoring from Sunday.

Can anyone give me an example of what your daily meal plans look like?

Grumpyoldthing · 24/01/2025 15:29

I average about 1900 calories a day .

I don’t think fasting would last very long in this house lol

Iwouldratherbesinging · 24/01/2025 15:33

I post in the ‘what I’ve eaten today’ thread @Kay2000 and I’m definitely not under 1000 calories (unless I’m on a fast day, then I’ll have a max of 500, I’ve always done this so will continue). I don’t calorie count though, It can become a bit obsessive and I haven’t got the patience or inclination to. I may have to rethink if I stop losing weight.
suppression peaks and troughs for me throughout the week, so day two and three after a jab I’ll eat a lot less, then make up for it on the other days.
a ‘normal’ day will be:
breakfast, either full fat Greek yoghurt with honey and berries or overnight oats with frozen blueberries. Sometimes I’ll crush up a weetabix on the Greek yoghurt.
lunch will usually be soup or cheese and crackers and fruit, chopped apple with peanut butter or a tuna and bean pot. I usually eat at my desk. If I’m still full from breakfast I’ll eat very little at lunchtime as I want to enjoy my dinner.
dinner will be something home cooked, tonight we’re having home made burgers, next week we are having gammon, new potatoes and veg which will last a couple of days, hm chicken curry with veg and rice, scrambled egg and tinned toms on sourdough. Most dinners are what I would have had before MJ but half the portion.
snacks will vary depending on what’s in the house, babybel cheese, grapes, fun size chocolate bar, we are working our way through a box of baklava at the moment and I’m finding it easy to eat one every night.

I should try and track calories for one day just to get a rough idea of what I am eating!

Iwouldratherbesinging · 24/01/2025 15:37

Oh and I weigh officially one a week on a Tuesday, but do tend to hop on more than once a week, but only first thing in the morning. I do fluctuate sometimes, but I don’t worry about it as it’s usually sorted itself out but the Tuesday weigh day.

Lobsterteapot · 24/01/2025 15:38

Second weigh in and 4 pounds lost very pleased with that.

TragicMuse · 24/01/2025 16:05

My 'healthy' BMI range is a loss of 8.25 to 10.75 stone.

I haven't started yet, I want to check in with my GP first to see if they'll prescribe for my diabetes - I'm guessing they won't but it's always worth a try.

So I'm hoping to start in about a month...

SianyEvs40 · 24/01/2025 18:38

Hello! I've found my way to this thread as I have a lot of weight to lose (probably about 10-11 stone to get to my ideal BMI 🙈) and I'm just about to start taking Mounjaro having been approved for SheMed. I'm looking forward to getting to know you as we traverse our own weight loss journeys 😊

MummyInTheNecropolis · 24/01/2025 19:24

Kay2000 · 24/01/2025 13:59

That’s a bit too much in 2 weeks - are you eating enough?

Yes, I’m eating 3 meals a day, but small portions and no snacking. I always have a big loss in week one of any diet I’ve been on. Last time I did slimming world I lost 10lbs in week 1, and 5lbs in week 2. It soon slows down! I think it’s mostly water weight in the beginning.

Kay2000 · 24/01/2025 22:40

@Iwouldratherbesinging and @Grumpyoldthing Thanks. I don’t really want to count calories unless I really need to, but will start to reduce my portion sizes this coming week. “What” I eat has never been my issue, the quantities are, along with snacking which I’ve largely eliminated. We also eat mainly home cooked food, with a pizza from Morrisons on a Saturday night (which I’m not giving up yet, although I’m eating less of it). I want to make long term, sustainable changes and try not to focus on the short term ups and downs, to lose 10+ stone needs a long term view (and I can’t see the end right now, no goal target as yet). I’m going to change my weigh-in day to mid week when my suppression and motivation is high.

@TragicMuse 🤞🏻 you can get it for your diabetes
@SianyEvs40 welcome to the thread. I have a similar amount of weight to lose as you and I’m on week 3.
@MummyInTheNecropolis It’s funny how we’re all different - I never had big losses first week. I remember once following WW to the letter and gaining a lb 🤦‍♀️

Iwouldratherbesinging · 24/01/2025 23:23

@TragicMuse definitely worth a try, but it’s the best thing I’ve done in a long time.
@SianyEvs40, welcome along!

I’m not sure how I feel about ‘healthy’ bmi’s, the top end of healthy for me is 9st 6lbs, the bottom end is 7st 5! Last time I saw those weights would have been in junior school 😂 they just seem unobtainable. I’m happier setting smaller goals. I started off at 21st something, this was before MJ, managed to lose, gain then lose and started MJ at 19st 2. My first goal is 16st 7 and I’m 4lbs away! The next goal will be 14st 7, once I hit that I’ll think about what the next goal will be.
If I started this journey with a 10 stone off goal I think I would just be miserable, it’s so far out of reach at the moment, but I’m enjoying the journey and I haven’t ever enjoyed a journey involving less food before! Its almost exciting… night all ☺️

@Iwouldratherbesinging

Thinking about it as a 10 stone loss does sound quite insurmountable. I'm focusing on one stone at a time. If I lose about 8 stone I'd get down to the lowest weight I've been as an adult, and I actually was quite happy with how I looked a that weight, so maybe that would be enough for me 😊

Kay2000 · 25/01/2025 08:31

Morning everyone. I agree. My best size was a size 16, and I was around 11 stone. That’s my vague goal but I try not to think about it as that’s literally half my start weight of 22 stone and that seems impossible. And I'm 25 years older, post menopause and my boobs are never going back where they were before 😆

I’m thinking of my goals in size terms - currently 28/30 and I have clothes in all sizes below, a 24/26 seems attainable and after that 22 and so on. It actually feels possible, which is a big mental hurdle overcome.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 26/01/2025 14:38

@Kay2000 we are pretty much in the same boat. MySW was 22stone. And to be not overweight I'd have to be 11stone. This seems impossible. And shocking to have literally doubled in weight.

I'm perimenipausal and realistically if I could lose half my excess weight I'd still be obese but I'd be much more comfortable in my body.

I do wonder if I'll need to be on it long term.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 26/01/2025 14:39

@Kay2000 and yes I've already had similar thoughts about clothes sizes!!.

If I could get to 18-20 I'd be able to buy from far more shops than I can at 26-28.

Kay2000 · 26/01/2025 17:16

@FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden It would be so good to order an 18 from any shop and know it should fit. I want to fit into Gudrun clothes comfortably. I honestly think we’ll do so much good for our health if we shift 5, 6, 7 … stones, never mind 11 (I still find it hard to believe I’ve gained that much, I mean, I know I have, but 11 STONE TOO MUCH?!!)

Anyway, I weighed in and another 2lb off. It seems slow compared with others, but I’m not counting calories and I’m just eating much less. And 2lb a week is a safe amount to lose if I can be consistent.

in other news I’ve started bleeding like a period, which is surprising as I’m post menopause, on HRT and post endometrial ablation (although the HRT dr said I’d probably have some endometrium remaining or regrown so not to be surprised if I did have some spotting). Searching on here it does seem as this can happen but I obviously need to get checked out. I’m not concerned, it feels very much hormonal and related to the MJ rather than something sinister. Anyone else had this?

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 26/01/2025 17:21

My first jab caused a heavy period with clots when I'm used to very sporadic light ones. But I'm only peri. I'd probably mention it to shemed and ask for a call and/or your Dr.

StressedEric · 27/01/2025 10:51

Coming onto this thread for the first time . I’ve been on Mounjaro since mid September, I’m on week 1 of 10mg, and apart from bloating in days 1-3 post jab , sporadic constipation, and feeling freezing ALL the time I’ve had no significant side effects .
I started at 23 stone 7, and last week hit my first goal of getting out of the 20stones , weighing at 19.12.
I jabbed as normal over Xmas but ate more than I wanted to but SO much less than I have at all other Christmases past .
ive gone from drinking every weekend to drinking a few times a month for celebrations.
I am using MFP to track weekly calories , so I can plan for meals out , having an alcoholic drink , birthdays etc and be able to keep my losses going at 1-3lb a week ( depending on what is going on in my social life !)
I am aiming for 1200-1500 calories a day and 2l of water a day, including electrolytes dissolved in a 1l bottle for work .
key for me has been upping the water and decreasing caffeine , plus eating plain chicken and veg as my default evening meal.

JusteanBiscuits · 27/01/2025 14:11

Not a good weekend. Sons birthday and hit 1500 cals on both Saturday and Sunday. So am expecting my first gain tomorrow.

Debating whether to skip weighing tomorrow or not!!

Iwouldratherbesinging · 27/01/2025 14:27

Welcome @StressedEric, I can empathise with the freezing all the time! I’m post menopause and suffered constantly with hot flushes, MJ has well and truly knocked those on the head. Congratulations on the new stone bracket, it’s such a good feeling!

I can’t imagine that two days of 1500 calories would cause damage @JusteanBiscuits, more importantly did you have a good time? Happy birthday to your son 🎈
