Would weight loss jabs work for me?

Those with experience of weight loss jabs, I'm just wondering if you could tell me if you think it would work for me.

I work out a lot, the gym is really my only 'hobby'. I'm super into fitness, I love it. I feel really strong and I'm not 'fat', but I definitely have some weight I'd like to lose as I eat way too much. I'd go as far as to say I'm addicted to junk food. I really struggle with food, even if I'm eating a salad it will be such a huge portion that it's not healthy. Going to the gym 5 times a week definitely helps me not to get to the 'very fat' stage, but I know I could lose a few kg to feel confident and to be healthier.

Would it work for me, just to lose a few kg? I see stories on here of very dramatic weight loss which is amazing and I love that it's helping people, but I think I'd only want to lose about 5kg max

What's your BMI?

VanillaPlanifolia · 13/11/2024 18:23

You'd have to go to the consultation or submit photos and measurements

teenmaw · 13/11/2024 18:24

Her BMI is irrelevant as she's weight training so it'll mean nothing in this context. Op you will lose weight on drugs but will pile it back on as soon as you come off them. You need to change your eating habits for long term change but you know this

What's your BMI?

25, but I don't tend to take much notice of that because I lift weights so I have a lot of muscle (which weighs much more than fat). My bfp is around 27% so definitely room for improvement although not terrible

You'll lose muscle mass, so if you're really into going to the gym then you'll notice.

Her BMI is not irrelevant.

GLP-1 medication is only prescribed if the BMI is 30 or higher.

Or 27, with certain other medical conditions.

You're not eligible.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/11/2024 18:27

You're 'just' overweight and you lift. It's not for you.

I don't mind losing a bit of muscle mass but strength is important to me, so this is good to know!

Well, you're not eligible if your BMI is 25.

Ah OK I didn't realise it had to be so high

No, you've got less than a stone to lose, anyone prescribing you with the drug would be totally irresponsible

Of course it does.
If not, people whose BMI is normal (like you) can have very serious side -effects.

My BMI on starting was 49.

It's now 36.

No pharmacy will prescribe it.

I'll be thrilled when my BMI gets down to 30.

It's not especially high, really.

It's a medicine to treat obesity (30bmi amd above, or from 27bmi with other medical condition). As you're not obese, you won't be prescribed it by any registered pharmacy.

goingdownfighting · 13/11/2024 18:48

DH prescribes this and the risks do not outweigh the benefits if you are lower BMI - and you have no recourse if you suffer any side effects, as you are going outside what it is prescribed for.

My BMI is 25 and I'm struggling to lose too. I'm going to look at berberine.

Yes, and it's very foolish of them.

It didn’t occur to you that a person would need to be obese in order to access a drug prescribed to treat their obesity?

Lastonightadjsavedmylife · 14/11/2024 07:25

I think maybe you’re confused and haven’t taken the time to educate yourself, which is very surprising as these drugs are all over the news. This is a medication for either diabetes or obesity. It is not for treating healthy weight people.

No she won’t, good grief the lack of knowledge is astonishing. You only lose muscle mass if you do not exercise and eat enough protein.

how can people not understand the human body. Stunned op you went oh ok,

Couldn't agree more, people like that are giving the drug a bad name, along with those fucking about with the doses, talking about how many clicks to get different doses. Just take what you're bloody prescribed!
