Why are we not being vocal about the miracle of weight loss jabs. ?

I started Mountjaro in April at 15 stone 10
I am now 11 stone . Which is my goal weight for my 5'10 frame. I have maintained that for 2 months having started regular exercise that I really enjoy - as well as ZOE healthy eating /cooking which I enjoy equally.

When people say to me 'Wow ! You look amazing (I'm not daft - they mean you don't look fat anymore) .. how have you done it . I am truthful and say 'fat jabs' .. and expand if they don't understand.

However , I have noticed on all the gazillion threads in here about weight loss injections, people are reticent to be honest . .. "my DH knows but haven't told anyone else " .. is a common remark . But WHY ???

Obesity is a life threatening condition. Like Dementia , cancer , liver failure etc etc .. if anyone had one of those conditions and found a drug to help , would they keep quiet or shout it from the bloody roof tops . ?

Or is the old adage true . Fat is a feminist (female) issue ? and we need to pretend it isn't ?

No exactly my point, how many not very bright people might actually die buying it from some random website.

But people who are stupid enough to do this could buy anything dangerous from anywhere. Adults have to take responsibility for themselves.

ChangeHasCome · 07/10/2024 21:46

Some people have had their GPs mention the GLP-1 to them but due to it not being available yet on the NHS for weightloss (except for specific criteria), they can't prescribe yet. Some people's GP have been supportive of taking these meds from private prescription online. A lot of these "dodgy" online pharmacies are the same online pharmacies that some of us receive our long term NHS prescription meds too.

So are these doctors and pharmacies stupidly advising and supporting people "pumping their body full of drugs and toxic shite"? If so, they need to lose their license and go to jail!

Oh another stereotype. Fatties just need education about food

Pork pie = bad
little gem = good

Something like that.

I cleared most of my salad patch one binge last summer, ate Black Seeded Simpson leaves until I felt sick and then had the runs from all the fibre. Still needed a dose of sugar to actually "get the hit" that would quell the cravings.

I think there's a lot of people out there who've never experienced any kind of eating disorder and completely lack empathy.

Cheat code

Some people prefer legitimate effort/success.

Smug code.

Some people prefer the thin air of the sanctimonious high ground.

soupfiend · 07/10/2024 21:47

I mean imagine a world where we are all slim and within a healthy BMI

No one will know who cheated, who took the injections or had surgery.

How awful it will be for the judgey ones, they wont know, they cant judge, they cant feel superior, all these 'other' naturally slim, all these 'Im careful about what I eat and watch my weight' people around them. They just wont know who 'we' are!!! They cant look down their noses at us!

I wonder how many people would lose weight if they dedicated that £150-£200 a month to their diet and gym?

itwasnevermine · 07/10/2024 21:45

@oakleaffy what about those who have been on GLP-1s for years and years for other conditions?

Assuming they are not taking them for weight loss but for other reasons.

If for weight loss, the weight will just pile back on when these drugs are stopped.

Exercise and less calorific food is much safer.

NCfortheeatingdisorderboard · 07/10/2024 21:49

FFS I shouldn't read these threads, it's triggered another binge.

Flopsy145 · 07/10/2024 21:49

itwasnevermine · 07/10/2024 21:38

@Flopsy145 but I did all of that. And I lost four stone by doing so, but it wasn't enough to prevent adverse health consequences. You've been told multiple times how it changes things for people but choose not to listen and instead pretend it's still a willpower thing and a moral failing.

That's great you lost that much, is there a reason you stopped and changed to the jabs rather than continuing?

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 07/10/2024 21:50

Wow, there are some really unpleasant and vitriolic posters on both sides of this debate!

Not nearly as many as are losing weight now with this particular weightloss aid. It helps them to focus on their diet and exercise and be successful with them too. It's not one or the other.

The majority of people who lose weight through any diet will put the weight back on. So do you think everyone should stop bothering to try?

itwasnevermine · 07/10/2024 21:51

@Flopsy145 as I said in my other responses to you.

The weight loss was too slow. I also had an injury that made exercising pretty much impossible and it completely demotivated me and demoralised me. I was exhausted, and mentally done when I decided I'd give them a shot for one month. That was it, I was going to do one month and if it didn't work I was going to the doctor for surgery.

Now I'm at the start of my third month and it's changed literally everything for me.

Guess what? I pay for the weight loss injections, and also pay an equal amount on good, nutritious food, my gym membership and exercise classes. Because you still need to eat well and exercise while taking them, otherwise you won’t lose any weight.

CoverMeInMarmalade · 07/10/2024 21:53

Except they’re also licensed to treat obesity, not just diabetes.

And now licensed to reduce cardiovascular risk - ie to reduce the chances of heart attack.

And a licence to help reduce Parkinson's risk also being pursued. Studies into how they help other addictions also ongoing.

GLP-1 agonists are going to have a huge impact on health, I think. They are already reporting that obesity levels have peaked in the US and are dropping, thanks to these drugs.

You should see many people on some threads and other forums who're having unexpected side effects of not being able to smoke much/anymore, or drink much/anymore. Most are happy about it and some aren't but they know its better for their health.

I haven’t touched a single drop of alcohol since taking the medication. I don’t have any interest in it whatsoever.

This is the crux of the problem. If this happens and there are no fat people to outwardly hate and deride, then a lot of people are going to have to go back to more traditional forms of bigotry or find something entirely new to hate about other people. It's a lot to have to think about

@Flopsy145 no comment re. the other medications being used for other purposes?

Your poor sister

My poor sister ate herself into oblivion despite living with an exceptionally healthy mum who would cook her exceptionally healthy meals, a home gym that was very well stocked, no disability, no money issues, plenty of time. But tbh she was lazy and if I'm honest, gluttonous.

So no I don't feel sorry for her.

Amazing! Congrats! I've read this so many times. It's amazing and more benefits we don't know yet would still come out and they'd all be positive, despite what some people "foresee" or wish for, so they can tell us "I told you so".
