Why are we not being vocal about the miracle of weight loss jabs. ?

AboutVattime · 07/10/2024 18:59

I started Mountjaro in April at 15 stone 10
I am now 11 stone . Which is my goal weight for my 5'10 frame. I have maintained that for 2 months having started regular exercise that I really enjoy - as well as ZOE healthy eating /cooking which I enjoy equally.

When people say to me 'Wow ! You look amazing (I'm not daft - they mean you don't look fat anymore) .. how have you done it . I am truthful and say 'fat jabs' .. and expand if they don't understand.

However , I have noticed on all the gazillion threads in here about weight loss injections, people are reticent to be honest . .. "my DH knows but haven't told anyone else " .. is a common remark . But WHY ???

Obesity is a life threatening condition. Like Dementia , cancer , liver failure etc etc .. if anyone had one of those conditions and found a drug to help , would they keep quiet or shout it from the bloody roof tops . ?

Or is the old adage true . Fat is a feminist (female) issue ? and we need to pretend it isn't ?

What happens when you stop the jabs? Surely you don't take it for the rest of your life

People have been on the drugs long term for diabetes.

I think they're probably afraid of people being jealous and maybe also feeling that they 'cheated', the same way many people don't admit to have tweakments and cosmetic surgery.

I don’t think it’s jealousy. Some people would rather exercise and diet than pump their body full of drugs.

Yes this is another thing, those on GLP-1s have reportedly been able to give up drinking and smoking a lot easier.

Of course that's a type of addiction that's accepted in society.

Yep heads will roll the more issues this "wonder drug" is used for. A wonder drug that's 'illegally and fraudulently' gotten by people's "friends" (So they know these fraudsters, hmm? Interesting sort of people to know. I'd be too ashamed to post it openly if it were me but there we go).

soupfiend · 07/10/2024 21:36

'work hard'

Yes thats right. No one is working hard if they have medical intervention to lose weight, stop smoking, stop drinking, stop heroin.

Obesity is more than just a lifestyle issue.

Human Genome study

Loos and Yeo

Social, behavioural and environmental causes of obesity

Jason Fung's book The Obesity Code is also very interesting.

Genetics, hormones, environmental factors such as low socioeconomic status, obesogenic environments and non-exercise activity thermogenesis (ie how many calories an individual burns at rest), among other things, all influence whether or not someone is likely to or does develop obesity.

Modern medical thinking leans more towards obesity being a disease rather than a personal choice or failing. Like most things, it is epigenetic - a complex mix of genes and how they interact with social and environmental factors.

Can I also recommend Secrets From The Eating Lab by Traci Mann PhD?

Those things you mention are not done for vanity reasons, many people taking these jabs are doing it for vanity. But lifts in turkey instead of squats and deadlifts is an example that's closer to the mark, potentially dangerous and unregulated for vanity reasons.

How do you know most peoples reasons for taking them? You only know the reasons of the few, not very clever, people you know who take them.
Vanity wasn’t my reason, and if you go on the support threads on here I don’t think you’ll find anyone who is doing it for that reason.
And it’s still not in the tiniest bit comparable to a Turkish butt lift, because even if someone’s reason for taking weight loss injections is vanity, the result is still that they are less likely to suffer from obesity related health conditions. What are the health benefits of a BBL?
Honestly I think your opinion is probably skewed by the fact that you seem to surround yourself with an abnormally large number of stupid, irresponsible people. Most of us using weight loss infections don’t fit into that category.

Flopsy145 · 07/10/2024 21:37

itwasnevermine · 07/10/2024 21:32

@Flopsy145 and those of us doing it for health reasons?

I would ask if there's a reason you haven't consulted proper nutritionist guidance (not shit like slimming world) but a proper dietician and joined a gym and got a PT? I would ask whether you were prescribed them by a Dr and if not, are you not worried about what you've bought online and injected into yourself?

If you've properly tried it all and the weight hasn't shifted (not sure how that would happen) then I hope it's the thing that works for you

Then they can! And good luck to them. Don’t know why they have such strong opinions on what other people do, though.

itwasnevermine · 07/10/2024 21:38

@Flopsy145 but I did all of that. And I lost four stone by doing so, but it wasn't enough to prevent adverse health consequences. You've been told multiple times how it changes things for people but choose not to listen and instead pretend it's still a willpower thing and a moral failing.

soupfiend · 07/10/2024 21:39

The vast majority of us ‘buying them online’ are having them prescribed by a Dr. It is a private prescription, authorised by a Dr, following a consultation about our suitability for the medication.

Yes thats right. No one is working hard if they have medical intervention to lose weight, stop smoking, stop drinking, stop heroin.

From now on I'm going to just will my headaches away, or a sinus infection or anything else where I might be using medication for something it wasn't initially used for.

Thalidomide was a miracle cure to some things too, just saying.
You still have to eat less, the drugs just make that easier. I’d rather work hard than risk it.

All new medications have risks. You could have said the same about paracetamol when it first came out. The Pill quadruples a woman's risk of stroke but we don't go around telling women to just keep their legs shut if they don't want kids.

It's almost as if people have this weird obsession about people suffering and struggling to be thin that they don't have about literally any other medical condition.

peonym · 07/10/2024 21:41

@MSLRT most people on weight loss treatment are still dieting and exercising. Have you really not got any idea how these treatments work?

Dont forget stupidity, you're clearly too stupid to know what healthy eating and healthy portions are. Once its explained to you, you'll just be able to do it.

Also moving around, you should be able to do this easily while morbidly obese, and sustain the motivation to do it even though its just too difficult to physically move around in actual fact.

Little gems are those tiny biscuits with the pink and yellow sugar swirls on top, popular on Sunday school trips in the early 80s right? I think the going rate for trade was 3 little gems for a cola cube.

Fluoreto · 07/10/2024 19:48

I think it's more likely to not be jealousy etc, but because some people listened in Biology at school and know how complex the body is and that the long-term impact isn't known yet.

This is exactly what a Dr. friend said today..The long term problems haven't had time to surface yet.

What happens when these drugs are stopped by the users?

Little gem is having an identity crisis today, full name - little gem lettuce.

itwasnevermine · 07/10/2024 21:44

@soupfiend I'll have a word with my Achilles!!

I'll never forget going to the doctor and saying that the pain in my ankle was stopping me exercising and bringing me down because I couldn't exercise and they said "well just do arm weights". How useful 🙄

itwasnevermine · 07/10/2024 21:45

@oakleaffy what about those who have been on GLP-1s for years and years for other conditions?

Good for them. They can do it however they want, and pat themselves on the back for it! No one is stopping them. Again, why do they care what other people do?
