Yes all medications have possible side effects. Being fat also has side effects.

alphatoomega · 05/10/2024 11:02

@eloelo123 Thank you so much for the link to smart bmi calculator. It is a more accurate tool than the NHS one which doesn't take age into consideration.

According to the NHS calculator, I'm still in the middle of overweight category, while the smart one says I'm now at my ideal weight for my age and ethnicity. Seeing that my best friend recently told me to stop losing weight, and my waistline is now less than half my height, I know which website information is more useful.

I had already decided that this was going to be my pen (I have two more doses) but will go cold turkey now as I go on holiday next week. If needed, I still have enough to taper off with small dosages after I return home.

CatKitt · 05/10/2024 11:06

I tried the smart bmi and it gave me the same bmi as the NHS one. I was hoping to be told I had a lower bmi than I thought. Oh well.

alphatoomega · 05/10/2024 14:10

@CatKitt I don't think the bmi differs between the two calculators, what is different is how healthy the bmi reading is relative to age and ethnicity. I'm now a 12p dress size and don't feel I would be healthy if I tried to get back to the size 8 I used to be in my 30's.

I have tried calorie counting, already eat healthy and gym it’s too much extra junk and portion size in my case.

Then cut out the extra junk and reduce your portion sizes!

SnacklessWonder · 05/10/2024 15:26

I've seen so much 'gatekeeping' over this recently on Mumsnet. The OP is very close to 'obese', jeez she could probably eat a big roast dinner tomorrow and qualify Monday.

I've been told that because I only had two stone to lose I didn't need MJ - but those two stone put me into the obese category.

I've been told that I shouldn't be taking MJ because I don't have food issues/addiction and it should only be for those that have food issues.

I've been told by BMI of 31.8 doesn't justify it (despite having a heart condition).

All this from people who are 'bigger' than me and have a higher BMI than me...I don't get it. It's like people with a BMI of 35+ think it should be JUST FOR THEM.

MayaPinion · 05/10/2024 15:31

It doesn't matter. The minute you come off it your appetite comes roaring back with bells on, almost like it's making up for lost time. This really isn't a 'want to look good in the wedding photos' drug. This is a 'I need to get thin enough for surgery' drug. It's being wildly and inappropriately used. You'll lose your stone in two months, come off the drug, and your stone will go straight back on unless you work REALLY hard at changing your habits, which you can do anyway.

SnacklessWonder · 05/10/2024 15:35

Most people who take the drug are changing their habits @MayaPinion. It's not a miracle drug, you have to make changes. The drug helps people to make those changes and change habits.

For me, it's stopped me reaching for a glass of wine every night - I no longer drink at home and don't intend to. I have switched to a more vegetarian based diet, prioritising protein. I walk a lot every day, go to the gym, drink two litres of water a day. All things I can keep up when I stop the drug very soon, because these things have become normal.

Lots of people struggle with exercise when they are overweight, losing the weight is a confidence boost and makes it easier to exercise because you're not out of breath.

KrankyKumquat · 05/10/2024 15:53

Hey @SnacklessWonder
I'm sorry you've experienced this. Some people will say anything to provoke a fight, especially when they're anonymous.
I've been on MJ for nearly 6 months and never seen anything like that said to anyone on the pages I follow here on MN, nor on the FB group I'm a member of. AIBU is a little different, it tends to encourage extremists and clearly from your experience, other pages can be a bit of a bear pit too but remember people can and do lie on SM and mislead about their intentions. Why would someone with a bmi of 35 want to block someone with a bmi of 32 from accessing WLM or question their health conditions or see themselves as more deserving? It makes no logical sense. So take no notice, and carry on doing your thing.

I honestly doubt that the people who're saying that to you are overwight or obese and taking Mounjaro. If they are, it's a very small minority and I've not seen it in all my time all over the actual pro-mounjaro threads especially on this injections board. It's usually the anti-MJ crew, regardless of their size, who're so against anyone taking it.

There's no gatekeeping here beside telling people to not encourage bad practice. As I said in another thread, it actually gives fodder to the anti-MJ crew like we've already seen a few here saying that this thread has confirmed what they think about MJ and those of us who take it, including those who go through the proper channels and lumping us all in one basket together with those who get it through their contacts in the salon or gym.

It will also make it difficult for those who need it when restrictions become so tight because people are being encouraged to lie to get it. It should be a concern. Nothing to do with gatekeeping.

Nothing that you've said means that the OP shouldn't be able to take it? There's no shortage at least at the moment. It shouldn't matter to you if people with a bmi of under 30 take it

SnacklessWonder · 05/10/2024 17:58

@CatKitt @KrankyKumquat It's been said to me on MJ threads here in the Weight Loss Injection board. Just one example:

Probably contraversal opinion but I really do think its an amazing tool for people who have uhealthy relationships with food, and should be restricted for people with type 2 diabetes and those who have a considerable amount of weight to lose.

yipyipyop · 05/10/2024 18:04

Your bmi isn't even 30. I've managed to get down from 30 to 25 in a few months without pumping myself full of chemicals. Just a better diet.

MissMeMiss · 05/10/2024 18:06

Pavolvaa · 04/10/2024 10:42

Yes this is very unfair people stay on till 25 BMI! Thanks think I will do it end of the day at the time of the month!

Why is that 'unfair'?

CatKitt · 05/10/2024 18:15

Blanketyre · 05/10/2024 17:56

Again, you're misrepresenting the issue here. Nothing I've said suggests I have a problem with OP's bmi.

What I have a problem with is people fraudulently acquiring a regulated medication or those selling it to their friends at the gym or salon. Do you not have a problem with this?

CatKitt · 06/10/2024 00:06

Oh and @Pavolvaa OP, someone on another thread said they got the prescription from Asda with a 29 bmi, after being rejected elsewhere. Maybe you can check them.

GrimDamnFanjo · 06/10/2024 01:57

OP you do realise that even if you were prescribed you'll still need to diet and exercise? This isn't some magic fat melting vaccine.

NewLifter · 06/10/2024 08:48

It's all about risk V benefit. There are of course risks from taking this drug. When you weigh it up against the risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol etc, suddenly it seems worth the risk.

If none of those apply, then it doesn't seem worth it.

That's why there are criteria.

I understand your point, you're so close to the criteria, but there has to be a cut off somewhere.

My BMI is now 28 and I won't be stopping MJ anytime soon as it has turned my life around. I started with a BMI of around 34.

However my weight fluctuates year to year, in 2019 my BMI was 42. In 2022 it was 27.

I'm hoping MJ will help me maintain a normal weight without those extreme fluctuations, which are bound to have harmed my health.

I've completely messed up my hormones and metabolism clearly - or they were always messed up which caused my weigh issues - I guess we will never know! But that's why I need MJ.

Pavolvaa · 06/10/2024 11:15

GrimDamnFanjo · 06/10/2024 01:57

Yes obviously I am aware, I already use a PT but it’s all about the food. As per the millions using these drugs it not that easy for everyone just to control their diet.

Pavolvaa · 04/10/2024 10:25

It’s crazy it almost motivates you to gain weight to qualify

Don’t be daft

you aren’t obese. You don’t need MJ. It’s a drug to treat obesity which can cause serious health problems. Not a quick fix for someone overweight to drop a couple of stone

WorriedRelative · 06/10/2024 20:18

Seriously fuck off with the spam codes. There's a thread for that.

When you say "you won't be stopping MJ anytime soon" how does that work if you're already under the prescription range and will presumably keep reducing?

Not gatekeeping, I'm taking a different obesity prescription myself and wondering the same, at what point do they stop prescribing and is it at a different stage if you started higher and have lost weight? Given OPs BMI is 29.9 and she can't get it but you seem confident that even once you go below 28 you'll be fine.

SnacklessWonder · 08/10/2024 11:46

@easylikeasundaymorn I know that wasn't at me, but Medpexress say you can continue until you are in a healthy weight range ie BMI of 25 or lower if minority ethnic group. The important part is your starting BMI.

My BMI is 27.2 so I can continue taking it for a little while yet.
