Mounjaro and underactive thyroid

Hi everyone

I’m considering using Mounjaro as I would like to lose 5 stone or more. I am wondering if like me, anyone has an underactive thyroid and has been using MJ, and what effect it has had on your hypothyroidism? I’m currently taking 150mg of levothyroxine and have a high BMI.

Love how brilliantly supportive this community is.

Yes. I’m underactive thyfoid and on levothyroxine. I started mounjaro 6 days ago. So far nothing happenedwith my thyroid i think. But might changed. Following this thread

Thanks for replying. That's good to know so far. Hopefully it won't effect things negatively. I'm hoping to start shortly with MJ but trying to research as much as possible at the moment.

Hopefully someone who has been on MJ for a longer period will be able to offer some insight as well 🙂

I’m hypothyroid and take 175mcg thyroxine daily.
I’ve been on MJ since 16/5/24 and haven’t felt any different regarding my hypothyroidism.
I’m due my annual thyroid blood test in December so that will be interesting to see if there’s any change in the levels.

Hopefully your annual blood test won't show any changes. It's hard to get the right dosage as it is. 😀

I am hypothyroid and started MJ yesterday as I just can’t shift the excess weight. That’s despite exercise, high protein, low carb etc etc

@Pinkbendyman Do you mind me asking how has your weight loss been? Has it been slow, steady or better than anticipated?
I'm curious to know as diets I have done in the past have been incredibly slow in terms of weight loss and some weeks its been a case of losing a couple of pound, then it going back on and that on/off cycle for a while.

Hypothyroidism is incredibly frustrating, hopefully you will find MJ helpful and the weight loss will be better with it.

Kudos to you for trying it. I’m hypo and would love to try it but the risk of thyroid cancer has ruled it out for me. I’m interested to follow and see how you all get on! Good luck.

Pinkbendyman · 01/10/2024 07:36

@JeliBean Initially when I started on MJ in May, the weight loss was between 2 and 3 pounds per week.

I’ve lost 46 pounds since I started, which would have been impossible without MJ.

Now that I’m nearing my goal weight, it’s slowed down to around 1 pound a week. I’ve got 10 pounds left to lose to reach a healthy BMI, which I hope to achieve before Christmas.

JeliBean · 01/10/2024 20:14

@Pinkbendyman Thats a brilliant achievement! Congrats! Like you say without the MJ the likelihood of being able to be as consistent with the thyroid issue would probably be nigh on impossible.
hope you manage to get to goal soon

Hey, I have an under active thyroid. I started MJ in Feb. Since Jan I have lost 80lbs. 5st 10lbs. BMI from 37 to 25. (Started dieting in Jan with keto, then moved to MJ in Feb)

MJ works. I haven't felt like my losses have been less than any one else. I'm very pleased with how well MJ works for me. I also can eat carbs and still lose weight. Something that I was never able to do when not on MJ.

Good luck

JeliBean · 02/10/2024 13:34

@ObsidianTree Wow! That's amazing! Well done on your weight loss. It's good to know that MJ works for us on thyroxine as well. And that you can have carbs too. Hope you get to your goal soon.

@JeliBean and @ObsidianTree thanks so much for your comments. It’s very reassuring to hear of your successes despite being hypothyroid. I feel I’m settling into this journey now and the side effects are a bit less today.

JeliBean · 02/10/2024 23:46

@letshavetea i haven’t started yet, but I have ordered with MedExpress tonight so hopefully I will get started soon!

Hello everyone, I realise this is an old thread, was just wondering how you were getting on and whether some of you have had come off MJ now and kept the weight off

How did you decide on MJ rather than Ozempic or wegovy?

I take 50mg levothyroxine daily and am keen to try an injection

Julesni77 · 01/05/2025 17:08

Hi - I am hypothyroid - taking 150mcg levothyroxine daily - my journey has been slow but without mountjaro I was unable to lose weight at all! Been on since December and have lost just over 2 stone - 7 more to go till healthy BMI but i would be delighted to get 3 more off!

I dont think I will ever be able to come off it though

Letshavetea1 · 01/05/2025 19:06

Hi @JeliBean I’ve been on MJ since the beginning of October ‘24. Ive lost 1 stone 21bs. I have eight pounds to go to a healthy bmi and I’d like to lose another half stone on top of that (so another stone to lose). I’ve only just gone up to 7.5mg on MJ. As you can see, I’m a very slow loser, but I feel so much better. I would never have lost this weight without MJ as I’d spent years losing and putting on the same weight.! I’m on 50mcg Levothyroxine and 50mg Sertraline. I just think you have to prepare yourself for very slow losses. Mine averages 0.51 per week at the moment. Still better than gaining. I look and feel so much better.

Letshavetea1 · 01/05/2025 19:07

Sorry meant for @Pipsquiggle!

Pipsquiggle · 01/05/2025 20:23

@Julesni77 and @Letshavetea1

Wow! amazing well done to both of you.

Can I ask why did you choose MJ vs wegovy or ozempic?

Letshavetea1 · 02/05/2025 07:34

I’d read the research that MJ is more effective. So that’s what I went for. Pleased I did. It’s fantastic.

Vatsallfolks · 02/05/2025 09:01

I am hypothyroid and have taken 200 mg of thyroxine for 34 years. I started MJ in April 24 at 95kg. Got to goal in November at 67kg (I’m 5’7) . Doctor reduced my thyroxine and stopped bp meds.

I treated myself to a tummy tuck last month. So lost another 4kg of loose skin.. I take a maintenance dose of MJ of 6mg (my happy place where I can eat healthily without snacking and ‘food noise’ still ‘off’).

Hey, I'm still on Mounjaro but in maintenance now. Currently sitting at 10st 7lbs and BMI around 22. I chose MJ because I had heard it had better results than ozempic/wegovy. It does have better results. (Ozempic and wegovy is the same medication by the way).

I will be staying on Mounjaro because it's fixed the issues that my thyroid problems caused. If I was to come off Mounjaro I'm pretty sure the weight would come back on.

I have reduced my levothyroxine dose and will start having blood tests every 3 months to check my levels.

For those with thyroid issues, it's best to speak to your Dr sooner than later as apparently we need blood tests every three months when on Mounjaro. I didn't realise this until recently. Must be a new thing for us.

Sheila321 · 11/07/2025 06:42

I’m about to have my first mounjaro jab today I also have under active thyroid and take 125mg of levothyroxine daily, I’m 62 years old I’m wondering if anyone knows if age makes a difference in weight loss, also has anyone had side effects, I’m unable to do proper exercise due to disabilities, any advice would be gratefully appreciated Thank you

Letshavetea1 · 11/07/2025 07:20

@Sheila321 - I’m not sure about age. I think it’ll be the hypothyroidism and as you’ve said for you also your disabilities reducing movement options? I’m 69 and have now lost 1 stone 6.6 lb since October 2024. I’m okay with the slow rate of loss and feel fantastic. My BP is down and no more achey joints.

Only 2.9lb to a bmi of 25! I then want to lose another 7lb to give me wriggle room. Monitor your weight (weight loss tracking app) tells me I’ll hit that goal by December (!!). The alternative without MJ is that I’d still be overweight by Christmas. I’m planning to stay on MJ for maintenance.

You have to be prepared for plateaus and look at the weight loss trend and monthly loss. Having said that I do weigh daily! My average weekly loss is 0.51lb a week.

Good luck with your journey.
