Mounjaro and underactive thyroid

Hi everyone

I’m considering using Mounjaro as I would like to lose 5 stone or more. I am wondering if like me, anyone has an underactive thyroid and has been using MJ, and what effect it has had on your hypothyroidism? I’m currently taking 150mg of levothyroxine and have a high BMI.

Love how brilliantly supportive this community is.

@Sheila321 - I’m not sure about age. I think it’ll be the hypothyroidism and as you’ve said for you also your disabilities reducing movement options? I’m 69 and have now lost 1 stone 6.6 lb since October 2024. I’m okay with the slow rate of loss and feel fantastic. My BP is down and no more achey joints.

Only 2.9lb to a bmi of 25! I then want to lose another 7lb to give me wriggle room. Monitor your weight (weight loss tracking app) tells me I’ll hit that goal by December (!!). The alternative without MJ is that I’d still be overweight by Christmas. I’m planning to stay on MJ for maintenance.

You have to be prepared for plateaus and look at the weight loss trend and monthly loss. Having said that I do weigh daily! My average weekly loss is 0.51lb a week.

Good luck with your journey.

How do you reply please

Please may I ask if anyone on here, is using Mounjaro and has under active thyroid but also has disabilities, my problem is going to be exercising, I’m unable to do much, but I do try, anyone have the same problem as me but still managed to lose weight, I can do the diet food side of it, I had my 1st injection 2 days ago so I’m hoping in the next few weeks, I’m still going to lose some weight, all advice is very gratefully appreciated Thank you lovely helpful people 💐

Yes. I have an underactive thyroid and mobility issues and don't exercise at all. Am 1lb off a 4 and a half stone loss since the middle of January.

Diet is the cornerstone of weight loss - you can exercise all you like but if you're overeating you won't notice a difference until you're in a calorie deficit.

Obviously I wish I could exercise to help tone up and be generally healthier, but I can't.

I never really felt suppression on any of my doses and I never lost food noise. The jab made me more able to deal with it though.

I did get satiety after my evening meal once I got up to 5mg.

My husband got full suppression, so I was quite jealous!

I followed a low carb diet which helped with the hunger. It's something I've been doing for years, so found it easiest. I did have to stop eating some of the fattier meals though (I'm veggie and got through a lot of cheese!) as it made me feel sick.

Husband calorie counted, and we had fairly similar meals, so I had an idea of the calories for me.

I did get nausea on and off, especially on my first 7.5mg pen (but not the second). Made the mistake of going up to 10mg and the nausea has been horrendous, so that definitely puts you off food! Came down to 7.5mg and same problem, so did 6mg last week and still an issue. Think I'm going to try 4mg tomorrow, as I'm off on holiday so don't want to feel ill (but don't want to come off completely).

My husband has had no side effects at all, did two 2.5 pens, two 5 pens, then hit his target. He went down to 2.5 for maintenance and found that too strong, so did a couple of weeks at 1.25mg then has come off it completely. He's hoping he can stick to it without needing any more, but has got a 2.5mg pen in the fridge just in case he starts eating everything on holiday!

So we've been very different in how we've reacted. No idea if my thyroid has had anything to do with that or not.

I’m sorry it’s been harder for you, I’m praying this doesn’t happen to me 🤞🏻

I have an underactive thyroid and really struggled to.lose weight. Since starting MJ ive lost 4 and a half stone. I have been on a year and a slower loser than most but it has really helped.

I have been careful to make sure I am taking levothyroxine as required and my thyroid has been normal when tested.

Can I ask if your appetite suppressed, in the early days of you taking MJ please? Well done on losing 4 and half stone in a year 👍🏻

I am hypothyroid on 50mg levo since Feb this year.

I started MJ on 1st April and in 15 weeks have lost 15kg - so 2.2lbs/week going from BMI 33 to 27.

I read a quite a bit about low carbing and IF - and a recommendation was to work up to one meal a day if your metabloism was disrupted by meno and/or hypo in order to kick start metabolism. I am both. I was doing 2MAD hanging out until 3pm for breakfast for the first two months but in the last month I have reduced my eating window further to OMAD and have noticed that I am now not getting the plateaus I was in the early months.

I have gone up a dose each pen change - so I am now on 10mg but I dont think I will go higher. I also do the golden dose and have been lucky with discounts so costs not too stupid.

Thanks for the tip to get bloods redone every 3 months.
