I also think we have to take BMI targets with a pinch of salt. My 17yo dd is 7 stone and a size 6. I'm 5' 5" and would look absolutely dreadful if I weighed less than 8 stone.

Cleverchops · 02/09/2024 08:10

Morning everyone just checking in! Hope we have a good week….. I am on my 5th injection and have lost 8lb in total; I feel good in myself but weight lost has slowed last couple of weeks!
Going to make the effort to do more exercise.

My "healthy" weight is apparently 7/8 stone. I genuinely think I'd look unwell at that

Wingingit11 · 02/09/2024 08:22

Weigh day for me - 2:5 lb bringing me to a total of 12lb in August which I am really happy with 🥳

Velondra · 02/09/2024 08:26

Hey all, have tried to weigh in this morning on my digital scales and they showed bo change but then I moved them to a different spot and it said 3lb down, decided to experiment and depending g on where they are placed there is as much as a 10lb difference in the weight it gives.
Now I have no idea if my start weight was accurate.
What scales are people using? I want to buy some new ones as I like to check every now and again how my weight is looking.
Thanks

Choux · 02/09/2024 08:34

@Velondra my digital scales are really old and I am aware they may be too old. So I have them on my tiled bathroom floor and never move them. They are aligned with the corner of one tile so I know they are in the usual spot. That minimises any inaccuracies due to age of scales.

I do consider buying some new Renpho scales which posters rate and are linked to an app so graph everything for you but I haven't got them yet.

Thanks. I need to see if I can leave then in one spot to avoid errors. Just reading on reddit and someone recommended calibrating them with a weight so that I know how put they are and remove or add accordingly so will try that,

Choux · 02/09/2024 08:41

I also checked how short @eeeeeeeee would have to be for that weight to be in the normal range as it seemed very low!

BMI is a good general tool but it doesn't take account of age. A 17 yo at a BMI of 23 is likely to be lots of muscle, minimum fat and very slim. At 54 and currently having a BMI of 25.7 I am now monitoring my face and body for the impact of weight loss.

I may get to 23 BMI but if I start looking gaunt or ill before I get there I will stop at 24 or 25. And even if I get there I will be bigger and flabbier than a 17 year old. And might struggle to maintain that BMI also.

Do you think you’d look dreadful because you’ve been that weight before?

I’m in my 20s and weighed around 7 stone (I measure in kg) a couple of years ago. In my head this is my “normal” weight as I have only been overweight in recent years. I know what I’d look like (slim/toned) and feel it’s attainable. Although it might sound like a low weight on the outside, it wouldn’t look dreadful as I’m that short. When you’re short, weight gain is super noticeable and it doesn’t take much to throw your figure off. I remember at 55kg, I had back rolls which is why I’m aiming lower.

MidLifeResurgence74 · 02/09/2024 08:49

@Rorpethy hope the day goes ok. As others have said sometimes being busy means you’re not quite so aware of how grim you’re feeling. Drink water!

AuntieDote · 02/09/2024 08:49

Home from holiday now and weighed this morning - 3lbs down over the last 2 weeks. I think this may be the only time in my life I’ve lost weight over a holiday! I didn’t feel massively deprived either.

2lbs off my first stone; hoping I can get that this week. Then another 3 after that would take me into the next stone bracket; and I think then I’ll finally feel like I’m getting somewhere!

SW - 15stone 2 BMI 34.2
CW - 14 stone 4 BMI 32.3

Pinkjenny · 02/09/2024 08:50

Ah I'm 47 so definitely not in my 20s! No, I've never been 7 stone (well maybe when I was about 13!) but I have massive boobs as well, BMI doesn't take into account your general frame.

Each to their own, we're all on our own journey to feeling better about ourselves.

Pinkjenny · 02/09/2024 08:53

The top range of my healthy BMI is around 10 stone 10. Again, I'm just going to see how I get on.

AnnieMcFanny · 02/09/2024 09:03

I’ve no idea what my BMI is and it’s not going to figure in my weight loss plan. I’m just going to go with how I’m looking and feeling whilst listening to my personal trainer who isn’t a fan of BMI but who I trust to help keep my healthy.

weaseleyes · 02/09/2024 09:22

I think BMI is a good general indicator for most people, but it obviously doesn't take into account things like frame and just how individuals feel in their own bodies. On the one hand, I think it's easy for those of us who have been very overweight for a while to think we'd look bad at a healthy BMI because it's just so far removed from how we've seen ourselves for years. On the other hand, it's definitely not worth feeling awful just to hit a technical number. And I agree that age makes a difference. What was beautifully slim at one age might feel scrawny at another, and there is a difference in bodies that have had a lot of weight fluctuations compared to those that have never been overweight.

The top end of my healthy BMI would be 9.5 stone, but I'd be happy to get to 10. I liked myself best at 8.5 stone, but it's been a few decades since I was that weight! I think now, even if I lost all the required weight, I'll still be carrying extra in the form of flab. I fear I will have a terrible apron type thing going on, and that might be a little better contained if I'm on the heavier side of healthy than the thinner side.

Would you consider surgery? It’s what I’m going to do even though im in my late 60’s

weaseleyes · 02/09/2024 09:40

No, I don't think I would consider surgery although it's tempting in some respects. First off I couldn't really afford it, but mainly I don't tend to heal very well and am prone to keloid scarring, so I think I'd just be setting myself up for more problems. Provided I'm healthier, I figure I'll just have to live with the consequences. I'll still be a lot better off than I am now - hopefully!

AnnieMcFanny · 02/09/2024 09:43

@weaseleyes I get you. I do swing from wanting to have surgery to saying - just tuck it all in your pants.

weaseleyes · 02/09/2024 09:48

I'd be more likely to consider it if I were 20 years younger, but now I tend to think the more medical interventions I can avoid the better! I was reluctant to take MJ because it felt like an unnecessary intervention to solve a problem I should be able to tackle myself. But then I looked hard at the fact that I had clearly failed to tackle it myself, and if it kept me fitter and away from needing treatment for all sorts of horrible conditions for as long as possible, then that was a good deal.

While on Mounjaro you can't totally ignore BMI as that is what is used by suppliers to assess if you can still buy pens. So to avoid being cut off before you are ready you have to work out what your supplier is going to do when you declare yourself at 25 BMI and assess if you want to go with that or switch suppliers.

Obviously this isn't an issue if you are working out so have high muscle ratio and feel and look amazing at a BMI of 26. Then no supplier will cut you off. That's one reason I am now upping (starting!) my strength building so my health and appearance continues to improve while perhaps my weight won't reduce as fast.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/09/2024 09:55

As long as you put scales in same place and wear same clothes /similar in style /weight and weigh at same time / then you will be ok

I like @Choux have scales on bathroom floor as they say not carpet and always make sure scales are on tile line

I am never going to be in the middle of my ‘healthy’ BMI. I’m aiming to get to 12 stone which is still overweight (I’m 5.6) but I know that that weight suits me. I lift weights 🏋️ and I’m broad but at 12 stone I’m happily a size 12 and can do all the lovely activity I want. I remember being 6 stone - I was 10 and I was mortified being weighed in front of everyone. It’s all about frame isn’t it?

TheShellBeach · 02/09/2024 10:18

BMI is very relevant, because that's how pharmacies decide if they'll prescribe MJ to you.

MargoLivebetter · 02/09/2024 10:37

Week 2 complete and first day of week 3 now. It is working well for me so far. I've lost 9lbs in total, 7 in week one and 2lb in week two. If I can lose 1-2lb per week from now on, I will be very happy.

I am calorie counting and protein gram counting. I'm working on the basis that whilst Mounjaro helps with weight loss, it doesn't actually cause the weight loss. I have to do that for myself and if I want to keep it off, then I need to know roughly where the intake levels are going to be for me to do that. I have so little appetite with these jabs, that this is proving easy at the moment.

I'm thinking of remaining on the 2.5 dose, as the suppression has been so intense for me. However, I know that there are still two weeks to go on this dose, so that may yet change.

I still cannot get over the absence of food noise. This is what it must be like all the time for naturally slim people. I'm wondering if I come off and struggle with all the food chatter again, if I could get hypnosis for it. Has anyone ever tried that?

weaseleyes · 02/09/2024 10:47

I'm hoping that a few months of absence of food noise might reduce the extent of it post-MJ and that it will make it easier for me to ignore it when I experience it as I'll know it's not a necessary/normal part of life. Fingers crossed!
