Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30. If you have additional health conditions you can get the medication with a BMI 27. (Prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart problems)

Mumsnet does not allow promo codes. Please do not post any. If you want one, ask and someone will PM you a code or there are now threads on the promo page that have codes for Mounjaro.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! Make sure the needle is twisted on tightly. Priming will help confirm if the needle is on securely and not faulty.

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Some people find that they don't need to go up a pen dose each month if the current pen dosage is working well for them. If you are unsure when to go up, speak to your prescriber.

8 - If you are having bad side effects after titrating up or you are struggling to eat your calories each day, your dose may be too high so should consider lowering your dose. Speak to your prescriber if unsure.

9 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

10 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

11 - Taking Mounjaro can stop birth control from being effective. If you are on birth control, consider extra protection if you aren't planning on conceiving anytime soon!

12 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

13 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

14 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

15 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

16 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Try and drink at least 2ltrs a day.

17 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
further reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

18 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

19 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

20 - Some of the places you can order from are:

MedExpress:

21- You will still be prescribed Mounjaro when your BMI falls below 30. However, it may be harder to move suppliers once your BMI is below 30 if you wanted to move.

22 - Worried about your supply being cut off when you get to a healthy BMI? Below is some info on some places maintenance plans.

The Family chemist :Would consult you as approached healthy BMI to discuss maintenance under close supervision(if you started with family chemist)
Curate: up to 2 years

Boots: Cut off at BMI 23
Asda: Cut off at a healthy BMI
Pharmacy2u: Will supply for maintenance
Bolt:Individual assessment once BMI 22 and does offer maintenance
Zava:Once healthy BMI will stop prescribing this treatment

23 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

@30not13 when my family wants to order a takeaway, usually pizza, I just tell them all that I don’t fancy anything but to go ahead and order without me.

They’ve all got used to it now although they were pretty shocked the first couple of times I declined!!

CarrotTail · 31/07/2024 17:55

30not13 · 31/07/2024 17:06

The family want a Chinese takeaway tonight, and I'm honestly at a loss a to what to order for myself because a, the thought of it is making me feel queasy and b, I know I'll only manage half of I'm lucky.

Any ideas?
I thought maybe a chicken foo yung that I can save half for tomorrow, and a hot and sour soup?

Does your Chinese restaurant do dim sum style starters? I often order steamed dumplings and edamame starters and thats enough for me these days. You could also try kung pao with chicken or tofu - comes with mixed veggies and no rice needed (and you’ll have leftovers for another day!). Enjoy

babycalf · 31/07/2024 17:57

Beansprouts with a scattering of crispy seaweed.

@30not13 I'd go for something high protein like satay chicken skewers (usually the sauce comes separately) and some veg like bean sprouts.

RagzRebooted · 31/07/2024 18:43

I ate a massive Chinese back when I was on 5mg I think, now on 10mg I can barely stand to think about Chinese food until about day 6 or 7!

ThirdStorm · 31/07/2024 18:54

I have downloaded the Vinted app and placed my first order! I didn’t make an offer, just went with buy it now. Excited!

Chicken satay skewers are a great idea. Love those. I had Japanese take out the other night and went for yakitori skewers, miso soup and some very basic sushi.

CherryCinnamon · 31/07/2024 19:06

Sorry- arithmetic not great!! I want to use my last dose and add some of my bonus dose from my 7.5mg to make a 10mg dose. I have an insulin syringe to draw up the extra bit so not counting clicks. Can anyone help? Thank you!🤞

DramMum · 31/07/2024 19:21

Does anyone have a myprotwin referral code please? Thanks

chesterlestreet · 31/07/2024 19:25

@DramMum here you go www.myprotein.com/referrals.list?applyCode=HELEN-RG36
Thanks

SilverHeels · 31/07/2024 19:54

So I have reached my next mini goal of 166lb. This is the lowest weight I reached in my adult life 5 years ago.

I am a shortie so BMI is still 29 and just over another 20lb to go. I am optimistic I can get there .

total loss now 34 lb.

I have broken my supermarket habit. I hadn’t realised how often I went and now I don’t think about it unless there is no food in the house. My local Tesco will be requesting a welfare check for me !

Pinkyp22 · 31/07/2024 06:36

Be careful with Cyclizine, you can become dependant on it and it can have some serious side effects.
I took it throughout pregnancy due to extreme morning sickness and had heart palpitations at one point.
Have also seen patients with a dependency to it.

Unfortunately I don't have a choice, am bed bound without it.

MelissaLouRocks · 31/07/2024 20:00

ObsidianTree · 31/07/2024 06:46

I think it's med express. They don't take anyone with an underactive thyroid for mj. So must be the same for their other medications.

@RagzRebooted maybe try to get cyclizine from other suppliers that don't reject automatically if you have any other conditions.

They took me for MJ with underactive thyroid and a whole host of other conditions. 🤔

OnInstagramAsFitFabForties · 31/07/2024 20:12

Excuse this really stupid question...but where does all the "weight" go? Do u just go to the toilet more? People talking about the whoosh and waking up having lost weight. I just want to understand the science of it :)

Offtopic · 31/07/2024 20:12

ThirdStorm · 31/07/2024 17:08

@Offtopic You use the pen as usual for the 5th dose. Twisting it to 1 may be hard so some of us use pliers to twist, then inject as usual.

Oh my god it worked! Thank you!

30not13 · 31/07/2024 20:14

Thank you for the Chinese food ideas :)

They didn't have any hot n sour soup, I forgot all about the existence of foo yung (cheers menopause) and panic ordered chicken in with ginger and pineapple then had 6 of dp chips and that did me just fine, even if it was a tad boring and bland!

I know I could easily have said no I don't want but the dc would be 🤔 and I do want to still "live" and learn to cope not just cut out and avoid.

I'm stashing your ideas for future!

@CherryCinnamon If it's a 7.5mg pen then 0.6ml is 7.5mg. To get 10mg you need 7.5mg plus 2.5mg so 0.6ml plus 0.2ml which is a syringe of 0.8ml.

How long have MedExpress been taking for people? Mine has been sitting in awaiting prescription since Sunday.

I'm another one waiting for MedExpress to approve my prescription. Ordered on Monday specifically because I would be in and DH would be out Weds-Fri. They've always been clockwork before 🙁

Weird. They tried to reject me so I had to email them to confirm. This was quite early on though. Maybe they relaxed the rules.

Yeah, I ordered Sunday in the hope that it would be here mid week. I hope they don't end up in the system over the weekend.

DesparatePragmatist · 31/07/2024 20:41

I've been reflecting about the protein talk upthread, and lots of previous times. I think it's important for newer thread members to know that many of us are trying to use MJ as a window to reset healthy, normal eating patterns, centred around 3 meals a day based on natural foods, mainly protein, fruit & veg. You don't need to buy ultra-processed high protein puddings, powders and alternative breads, or eat bodybuilder levels of protein (unless you are in fact a bodybuilder). Protein bars and shakes are meal replacements that will satiate even people not on MJ, theyll stop you wanting healthy food and are not really snacks/supplements.

The protein-boosted food obsession strikes me as a continuation of the disordered eating that got many of us into the obese category in the first place, and quite different from a re-education to base meals around natural protein and plants, paleo-style.

There were a couple of very insightful conversations a few threads ago, with people who felt they had unmedicated ADHD recognising they were shifting their dopamine hit from food to buying other stuff. And lots of us have a scarcity mindset around food and seek ways to over-eat something under the guise of health. And it's hard to stay abreast of the rapidly-changing advice - OP removed the reference to very high protein targets from the fantastic opening post after a discussion on the latest research a few threads back. I get it, there are lots of factors and we all have to find our personal way through to a healthy weight and to maintenance.

I'd just like to put in a plea not to normalise unbalanced eating, for the sake of all the people coming here for advice.

Tireduk · 31/07/2024 20:43

I ordered on Monday from Med Express and no confirmation so far. It’s the first time and I swapped from Family Chemist but I hope they don’t take too long? I emailed and they’ve told me there is a backlog due to high demand..
