Bonus doses

BigCroc · 15/07/2024 15:19

I know lots of people have used the bonus dose in the 2.5 pen as a stepping stone to the 5 pen, as the bonus dose seems to have more than 2.5 in it.
Does anyone happen to know how much is in the bonus dose for a 5 pen? Im on 5 at the moment, I have another 5 pen waiting to go in the fridge, but I thought I’d try and use the bonus dose first if possible. But I was concerned it might be too much.

And how do you get it out?

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 15/07/2024 16:20

My understanding is that all pens have at lease 0.6ml so a full dose. Many have a little more!
There are two ways to do it - either 'break' the pen with a hard twist which will allow you to take a 5th dose, or buy some insulin needles and syringe it from the seal.
For both, there is information in the main Monjouro thread and there are videos available too.

GreenGooner · 18/07/2024 17:22

Sorry to jump on this but to use the bonus dose, and some of the new dose, do you inject in the same site? Obviously I'll be using a fresh needle but unsure about doing two separate injections 🤷‍♀️

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 19/07/2024 06:04

@GreenGooner I did mine right next to each other.

Do remember that if you are using some from a higher dose pen, you need fewer ml to reach your preferred dose (unlike me! 🤦‍♀️)!

TheShellBeach · 19/07/2024 15:28

The bonus dose is 3.33mg.

It's 0.8ml of the 2.5mg pen.

You need to buy insulin syringes to get it out.

I've used two sites. It is not harmful to do this.

Diabetics inject several times a day with this size of needle, in different sites.

Does anyone know what the bonus dose is in the 7.5mg pen at all?

I’ve managed to twist mine to 1 again - so I’m guessing this will just be the 7.5mg?

Happycyclist · 21/07/2024 06:26

@Alwaysdarkestjustbeforedawn Yes.
If you are getting it by twisting it should be 7.5

The bonus dose in all the pens is more than 0.6ml, in my experience.

That's why I get it out with a syringe and calculate how much it actually is.

Alwaysdarkestjustbeforedawn · 21/07/2024 11:57

Ok great thanks - I twisted it with pliers and moved it back to 1 and took that yesterday with no horrific side effects so far, so fingers crossed it’ll stay that way!

VitaminU · 21/07/2024 13:25

Assuming bonus does is 0.80 ml then:

2.5 mg pen = 0.8/0.6 x 2.5 = 3.33 mg
5 mg pen = 0.8/0.6 x 5 = 6.66 mg
7.5 mg pen = 0.8/0.6 x 7.5 = 10 mg
and so on...

bonus dose (ml)/0.6 (ml) x standard pen dose (mg) = bonus dose (mg)

ACEwards · 21/07/2024 16:21

Ive never heard of the bonus dose.. what exactly is it? Just the left over bit that's in the pen at the end of dose 4? X

Yes. There is usually around 0.8 ml in there, so a bit more than the standard dose.

I bought these to extract and take it:

Yes. It's actually more than a normal dose.

It's supposedly for priming, but it's mad to waste it when the pens are so expensive.

I use insulin syringes to withdraw the bonus dose. That means that I can measure it, and know exactly what I'm getting.

User364837 · 21/07/2024 16:59

Is there anything to watch out for with using insulin needles? For those who haven’t injected before like this. Is there a risk of air bubbles? Do you need to prime it/tap it to get air out or anything?

if anyone could post the videos here that would be really handy as there are so many main threads now!

VitaminU · 21/07/2024 17:25

Yes, I would @User364837 .

I got 0.8 ml as a bonus dose last time but I also pulled in some air (wasn't concentrating properly) - so I got rid of that and primed. Ended up with 0.76 ml.

90yomakeuproom · 21/07/2024 19:19

So is there a way of getting the bonus dose with the usual needles?

Daft question but how do you get it out with a syringe?

You can buy syringes with needles. You pierce the bung with the needle and withdraw the liquid.

I haven't tried, but when you buy insulin syringes they come with needles.

TheShellBeach · 22/07/2024 08:42

Here's a code for getting £85 off your first pen.

I mean the ones you screw on that you get with the pen?

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 22/07/2024 17:24

@90yomakeuproom yes! Basically you have to do a very hard twist of your pen after it has locked following the 4rh dose. Some people use pliers😁. You will then be able to inject 0.6ml. Many people use the insulin syringes as you can get more out and make a 'bridging dose'

There are videos of the hard twist floating around.

I am not sure. I'll go and experiment and come back to the thread with the answer.

Snozzlemaid · 22/07/2024 18:56

These are the needles like you get with your pen https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALwwcB

You will need to do a hard twist to get the 5th dose that way. Some have to use pliers to get it to twist.
