What to wear to DS wedding.

Just that really. Mid 50s, 5'6, overweight. DS wedding. Bridal colours - teal. Don't want to clash. Don't want to be "centre of attention" but tend to dress "young" rather than "dowdy". Most people think I'm early 40s. Intend to lose weight (need to for other reasons). Spring wedding. Happy in maxi dresses, short dresses and jumpsuits. NOT skirts. Mid height heels are fine.
Ideas please.

What size do you need?

DelphiniumBlue · 12/09/2026 14:31

I just bought this dress from Phase Eight. It looks better on me than on the model ( I am curvier and a size 20) and it's very flattering. The blue is a stunning deep teal, but it comes in lots of colours.

Choosing a MOG dress can be complicated; size/weight is the least of it.
Generally, I'd choose a pastel or 'soft' jewel tone. What colours do you prefer?

What time of day is the wedding? Is it an all-day, multi-event marathon?
What will the wedding party wear? Morning clothes? Lounge suits? What sort of dresses will the bridesmaids wear?
What is the venue? Hotel? Beach? Stately home? Church?

What’s your dress size and budget op

I AM a bit of a Phase 8 fan.tbh

All day. Church wedding followed by "smart" reception. Don't really worry too much about budget, although not stretching to 1,000s

I "prefer" black 🤣🤣🤣
99% of my wardrobe is black ... but obviously npt suitable on this occasion. Not the biggest fan of pastels. Was wondering about a kingfisher colour

Depends on type of wedding. I wore a dress from Hobbs for DD’s which I’ve worn since too, a bonus. I bought from Clark’s village outlet store which brings the cost down if that’s an issue. I’ve also used quality brands direct to buy brand new clothes that are basically last seasons or so, typically priced at 1/3 or so of the original price. My key requirements for weddings are comfortable to wear all day (so no awkward ties, needing a strapless bra or pulling up or down), nothing revealing and ok for dancing.

bababamama · 12/09/2026 14:52

For a church wedding I’d opt for a slightly edgier dress with a conservative jacket, most churches are cold!

Ok what’s your average size, honestly op, no one can see you. But it makes a huge difference to the recommendations and there is a big difference between a size 22 woman and a size 16 one.

bafta16 · 12/09/2026 15:01

You are a great height! That's a start and people assume you are younger than the reality.

I'm not suggesting "plain" but I think sometimes less is more. Well cut, great up to the minute accessories.

No ghastly fuddy duddy weird stuff.

As I said, it depends on where I get my clothes from. Roman or phase 8, a size 16-18 fits. Asda, a size 20. Depends on fabric and style,

I DO like that, but unfortunately I think I’d look “busty” in it. Should have mentioned that a v neck or cowl, or anything that “splits” the front, suits me better than a straight round neck.

Well she did say maybe orange!

Nuttyrubble · 12/09/2026 15:39

I know it's brown, but I think it's nice!

That’s a really fantasitic dress. Shame it doesn’t work for the OP but I’m wondering if I can invent an occasion for it!
