When do you take off your engagement ring?

scottishGirl · 28/10/2023 19:11

Before receiving my engagement ring, I never wore rings. Therefore, I am unsure when I should be taking off the ring. At the moment I take it off for sleeping, washing dishes, cooking with raw meat, showering. I haven't been swimming since getting engaged, but would take it off for that too.

I also have to take it off for work sadly so cannot wear it as much as others will wear their rings.

I have a feeling I am probably being paranoid and taking it off more than necessary! Interested to hear your responses. Thanks!

I wear mine most of the time apart from when I’m carrying out certain aspects of my job as it’s not safe to have them on.

DuploTrain · 28/10/2023 20:49

I rarely wear my wedding or engagement rings, mainly just special or formal occasions.

I just don’t really wear rings and I don’t feel the need for a public display of my marital status.

LadyBird1973 · 28/10/2023 20:51

I would never ever take mine off in a public place, like a sink in a public loo. So I think it's best not to get into a habit of taking it off all the time. I wear mine for pretty much every except chopping raw meat, which I would only ever do at home anyway.

Somewhatchallenging · 28/10/2023 20:53

I virtually never wear mine.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/10/2023 20:56

Decorating and very messy hands-on cooking (kneading dough, forming meatballs with hands etc). That's it.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 28/10/2023 20:57

I stopped wearing my engagement ring soon after we got married and then stopped wearing my wedding ring a few years after that. I like the feeling of clean hands and moisturiser too much

bluesky45 · 28/10/2023 21:03

I pretty much never take either my engagement ring or wedding ring off. DH takes his off for work (manual job and he's heard some horror stories!) and wears it round his neck on a chain. He also takes it off for his sport because it's a contact sport so again not safe to wear. He leaves it at home for that.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 28/10/2023 21:05

I take mine off for the sort of activities you mentioned, OP. It has an emerald centre stone which once fell out and almost got lost, so I take better care of it now than I used to.

PinkRoses1245 · 28/10/2023 21:27

I take both mine off for swimming (chlorine is bad for gold), cleaning and gardening, and sometimes cooking. And baking bread! I’d rather keep them nice.

PinkRoses1245 · 28/10/2023 21:28

If I take them off it’s always at home, in my ring box. Don’t risk taking off at whilst you’re out!

Dogdaywoes · 28/10/2023 21:39

I never wore rings before I was engaged and just couldn't get on with wearing one. So I only wear it on special occasions. I can't stand the feeling!

I know what you mean, it is an adjustment having never worn rings before! I'm still getting used to the feeling and will admit that at the end of the day I quite like the feeling of taking it off for sleeping 😅🙈. Will see if that changes over time or not.

I take mine off when making crumble and that's it!

Yes absolutely. I've only ever taken it off at home.

I have both rings off more than I have on. I didn’t wear rings before getting engaged and still don’t like feel of them. If I remember to put them on to go to work, they come off as soon as I’m home. They’ve been lost a fair few times!

Tiredmum100 · 28/10/2023 23:17

I haven't worn mine in ages. I've stopped wearing my wedding ring as has dh. I found the skin under it was getting sore. Dh is always doing manual jobs. We've been married nearly 13 years.

sunshineandshowers40 · 28/10/2023 23:23

Never, used to take it off when I washed my hair but not for the last few years.

I get annoyed with mine after a while. I don't like the feeling of wet hands and rings. When I'm hot my fingers swell and the rings are tight. When I'm cold my fingers are dry and itchy and the rings fall off.

I hate the feeling of sleeping in them so they come off at night and sometimes don't go back on for days and days.

Before I was married it was the same. I just don't like the feeling.

Exactly me

Wolvesart · 28/10/2023 23:27

I now only wear mine as a dress ring type addition to the ring I wear as a wedding ring. During engagement and married life I have never worn it for household activities, same with wedding ring. Some yrs ago I had a very bad rash under the wedding ring (flat style) and started wearing my 10 yrs celebration ring (white gold, rounded inner shape, three diamonds) as a wedding band. On special occasions I wear the 35 yrs ring instead.

Clariee45 · 28/10/2023 23:28

Only for work (due to my job role) but otherwise never really

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 28/10/2023 23:31

I have one, but I’ve never actually worn it for more than a minute or two.

It lives in my bedside drawer.

Hence we don’t have wedding rings (or civil partnership rings) as they seemed entirely unnecessary to sit in a drawer.

BMrs · 28/10/2023 23:31

Never take my rings off for anything

AlltheFs · 28/10/2023 23:33

Never. Can’t get the fucker off now anyway. Knuckle got bashed and is now enormous. It’s going to have to be cut off I think.

Snowdropcow · 28/10/2023 23:34

I do occasional shifts on wards as a nurse and that’s the only time I take mine off. Otherwise never.

Work2live · 28/10/2023 23:36

I take mine off for:

Bed
Showers/swimming
Lifting weights
Cooking (handling raw meat etc)

I'm probably overly cautious, but I want to keep it in good condition. I hate the feeling of jewellery on me in bed too. Same for my wedding ring.
