When do you take off your engagement ring?

scottishGirl · 28/10/2023 19:11

Before receiving my engagement ring, I never wore rings. Therefore, I am unsure when I should be taking off the ring. At the moment I take it off for sleeping, washing dishes, cooking with raw meat, showering. I haven't been swimming since getting engaged, but would take it off for that too.

I also have to take it off for work sadly so cannot wear it as much as others will wear their rings.

I have a feeling I am probably being paranoid and taking it off more than necessary! Interested to hear your responses. Thanks!

Never. Platinum and diamond so inert. Nor my wedding ring. DH used to take his wedding ring off when playing cricket for safety reasons but otherwise not at all too.

BarbieKew · 28/10/2023 19:49

Only when baking eg kneading dough, and twice a year for an hour when I get it cleaned at the jewellers.

eurochick · 28/10/2023 19:49

Mine comes off for sleeping, showering, exercise, cooking and I often just leave it off if I am at home for the day. The same goes for my wedding ring.

UmaniCaroline · 28/10/2023 19:50

I haven't got an engagement ring but I take my wedding off for swimming and when I'm kneading/ mixing with hands.
I sometimes take it off for a shower.

I agree with pps who say it's personal preference. I know some people who never remove theirs.

Mine are also platinum and diamond and after 18 years of non stop wear I’ve suddenly developed an allergy to them. My finger blisters. Gutted.

stayflufft · 28/10/2023 19:52

I take mine off when I go swimming or to the gym. Or if we’ve had a row 😅

CurlyhairedAssassin · 28/10/2023 19:54

I used to take mine off when washing my hands but it didn't take long before i left it in th toilets at work and had a panic rushing back to check it was still there. It was, I put it on, and from then on only took it off at night in bed. And then a few years later when I got too fat for it and my wedding ring ha ha

Kick-boxing and messy arts/crafts

writingsonthewall · 28/10/2023 20:08

Personal preference. I don't like sleeping in mine, or exercising or showering. So I take off for those and also holidays as don't like taking them away (likely because they're always on/off for sleeping/swimming etc)

Sometimes they don't go back on for days at a time, sometimes every day. It's totally flexible and in no way related to the strength of our marriage. Neither of us are that fixated on them, but prob wear them more often than not.

1stTimeMama · 28/10/2023 20:11

The only time I take it, and my eternity ring, off is for weight work in the gym, and it goes straight back on afterwards. I don't ever take my wedding ring off though, it won't actually come off anyway!

scottishGirl · 28/10/2023 20:13

Good point to all those who have mentioned it depends on the ring and of course your lifestyle and personal preferences.

My ring is platinum and has three diamonds. (I was given my partners granny's ring at the proposal and then we went to a jeweller who created/designed a brand new ring with those diamonds). So there is sentimental family value and I also know how much the ring cost since I was part of the process of choosing it, so maybe this adds to my overthinking.

However , im glad to know lots of you take it off for some of the occasions I do, so I'm maybe not overthinking as much as I thought.

Sorry I feel dumb @DelurkingAJ but what do you mean by inert? Not a word I've used before but want to understand what you mean since our rings sound similar!

Its a mixed bag of responses so far which is really helpful and interesting.

Also thank you to those who have said congratulations ♥️

Sorry, I mean chemically inert…so it won’t react with chemicals etc (or not ones that wouldn’t first burn my hands!).

icebearforpresident · 28/10/2023 20:19

When I put on hand cream, or very occasionally if I’m cooking and making something by hand like a dough (so once or twice a year). Apart from that never.

scottishGirl · 28/10/2023 20:22

Thank you @DelurkingAJ .

I think I maybe just need to have more confidence that the ring won't damage as easily as I think...but at the same time if taking it off makes me feel better for the occasions I've mentioned, then that's ok. Good to see such varied responses ☺️

I hardly wear mine, I wfh though and amongst washing, cleaning, showering, kids bathtime, if I go for a swim or gym, cooking I just don't see the point of ruining it or loosing it if I left it on the side, I wear it if we go out or on a day I'm doing reduced things though doesn't mean any less and I'd just rather it look it's best and kept safe

Ladyoftheknight · 28/10/2023 20:23

When baking/cooking with my hands in something messy- batter, dough, marinades etc. Occasionally when playing with the DC, with water usually as the rings slip off if my hands get cold.

I have a spare, non-precious and less flashy ring for travelling. A close friend was held at gunpoint by someone who saw her engagement ring so I don't flash mine about. Mine has quite a significant stone in the middle and would be wanted by the wrong people.

sadforthem · 28/10/2023 20:26

I take all my rings off every night and when I'm baking or gardening.

scottishGirl · 28/10/2023 20:27

@Ladyoftheknight that is awful, your poor friend 😯😭 the non flashy ring is a good idea.

Never, ever, ever because it means the world to me. (DH died a year after we bought it and seven months after we married so it holds huge sentimental value)

I'm so sorry to read this. Completely understand why you couldn't remove it. xx

I don’t ever take it off, worn daily , in the shower, doing cleaning , at work etc

only times it’s been off is late pregnancy and also when I got the claws repaired after 20 years!

TossieFleacake · 28/10/2023 20:29

I rarely wear my engagement ring. Similarly to another poster above, I scratched DD when she was a baby and put it away.
I only wear my wedding ring when I leave the house.

TeenLifeMum · 28/10/2023 20:31

I have allergies that make my hands itchy and swollen so I have to take them off sometimes when there’s a flare up. I used to never take them off. Sometimes I move my engaged ring to my right hand rather than take it off entirely. I’m no less married to dh.

FoleyHuck · 28/10/2023 20:32

Some never take theirs off, I take mine off to sleep because I can't bear anything restrictive to sleep and if we're just lazing round the house (like today) some days I don't put it on at all. Doesn't make me any less married though.

Thanks to you and the other poster who shared this about the scratching. I don't have a child yet so its good you have said it so I can be conscious of this.

I normally never take my rings off. Even when I've had surgery, I've not removed my wedding ring. I suppose it would be different if any of my rings had porous stones, like emeralds, but otherwise I can't see any need to remove them, unless I want to change some of the rings on my other fingers.
