Finally, the weather seems to have made up its mind as to where the snow will ^probably* fall today. For England Wales, in the warning areas I would expect a pretty slushy mix in general.

met office advisories

Yorkshire also ought to be aware overnight.

It has been an incredible winter indeed. I've never ever known so much snow. Still not bought a sledge after the last lot as they were out of stock everywhere! Damn!

petunia · 18/02/2010 12:25

Weather advisory for Monday now.

PeachyPeachyEverPreachy · 18/02/2010 12:29

Hammering down here and pitching on the road

Hope dh gets abck from the valleys Ok tonight

We're in newport area

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2010 13:25

Interesting position for Mondays advisory, I think that the gfs showed the southern half being worst affected. So I wouldn't be surprised to see it change and the risk move further south. In your perusals Petunia, what do you reckon?

Hope he gets back nice and easily Peachy. I think he will need to be patient.

OYBK he has the Mitsibushi so should be OK (not 4X4 but far better than a SMART PMSL)

Wre're up forMOnday too it seems, 2/3 boys on inset anyway, ds3 may be kept home rather than drive X country with them all to fetch him again.

keeps things interesting PMSL,I warned dh it waspitching and he amde the call so my sympathy (as long as he'ssafe) is lakcing (he'shaving his first day in a mock TV studio learning the ropestoday for the morning in cardiff then heading out to valleys so was a bit excited)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2010 13:40

oh absolutely better than a Smart. or a light weight sports car as we once found trying to cross the peak district after a very sudden very heavy snowfall.

We were dug out of snow drifts 3 times, twice by the same group of scouts Ended up stranded in Bakewell with only the sodden freezing clothes were stood in. Tourist info found us a beautiful b&b, the lady there dried everything for us and we retired to a pub for the rest of the evening.

so Cardiff+tv=torchwood/Dr who. Is your dh going to be tres famous?

PeachyPeachyEverPreachy · 18/02/2010 13:43

droitwichmummy · 18/02/2010 15:48

Settling well now and lots more in the sky

101damnations · 18/02/2010 15:56

Well it started snowing at 12.45 in Leicestershire, but started coming in earnest about 1.30,it is still really heavy and settling. There must be about 3cm on the ground already.I am meant to be driving to a meeting a couple of villages away tonight, but think I'll cancel.

petunia · 18/02/2010 16:02

But looking at the charts, I can see how you and posters on the weather forums think that there might be more snow in the south of the country on Monday. (Actually, it's kind of hard to tell what posters on the forums think; there seems to be a bit of arguing between themselves about whether there's going to be snow, which area it's going to hit or if the cold spell's coming totally to an end! I'm just by it all!)

I'm at you being dug out of snowdrifts twice by the same team of scouts but that lady at the B&B sounds lovely! It reminded me though of some snowy days we had in February 1986, when my Aunt was visiting from Australia and we wanted to visit her, 2 days before she went back. She was staying with my Nan in the Cotswolds and a journey that should have taken an hour, took 2-3hrs. We got stuck twice, outside a farm on the Fosse Way and the lovely owners helped dig us out. Ever since then, that farm has been known as "Snowdrift Cottage!"

As for the weather here, it looks like the metoffice have got it about right for us, it started sleeting at about 1pm and at 3pm, just when I thought it was going to stop, we started having 'proper' snow with huge flakes! It's amazing how quickly everything gets covered in such a short time; we've got about 2cms now!

mankyscotslass · 18/02/2010 16:10

Dh made it home, but he says the M40 was shocking. He has never seen sno fall like it.

The flakes were the size of tennis balls.

DH is not prone to exaggeration.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2010 16:13

lucky you (sort of) with the 2cms. Its funny how in recent years (apart from last 2 febs!) snow has seemed so hard to come by and this winter you only have to sneeze and the rain turns to snow. (except down here today where it is alternating between sleet and rain)

I love the name snowdrift cottage

I'm still learning the ropes too with models and forums and stuff. The forums are so funny, they argue so hard about it all. but I suppose at some point given as we are mid feb, surely it must all come to an end at some point.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2010 20:16

As for Monday, the 12Z gfs moves the snow risk further north to where the met office have it.

OP posts:
petunia · 18/02/2010 21:03

Oh yes!

Well so far, despite having had snow most of the afternoon and evening, not that much has fallen. I think we got to 4cms but it's beginning to turn back to sleet and melt now. Noooooo!
We'll have to see whether that's the end of it for now; the metoffice is still saying we're due another load around 3am.

laughalot · 18/02/2010 21:14

Im in north notts it started around 5 30 ish but its more sleet im gutted i like the snow im hoping it snows monday.

crankytwanky · 18/02/2010 21:22

Its saying for my area on bbc weather on monday sunny intervals but on met office snow !!!!! I hope for snow.

CMOTdibbler · 19/02/2010 08:19

In Worcestershire, we have approx 2.5 inches of snow hanging around still. Bit of a nasty shock as it sleeted all morning yesterday, turned to snow and didn't settle, then between 1.30 and 4, it suddenly did, and the roads hadn't been gritted at all. Lots of sliding and skidding around resulted

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2010 08:51

Just very very occasionally I do feel sorry for Local Authorities, knowing when to grit under circs like yesterday must be a nightmare. Especially if they have precious little left. Do it to soon and its all washed away. Wait til it settles and the traffic slows right down so they can't get through.

or of course they may just not have had any left. I really hope they've learned their lesson this year.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2010 09:01

ok.

today snow showers but some good sunny intervals developing

Sat - looking reasonable for many but snow showers in some parts, including central England.

Sun - not sure but it does look like a weather system comes in over night, producing some heavy rain and quite possibly some significant snow in the south. Still too early to tell for sure.

Then looking ahead gfs shows quite a deep little low on wednesday, with more snow potential.
