Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

I agree. People are being ostriches about climate change. And as for ‘we survived 1976’ - well, not everyone did. Hundreds of people died as a result of the heat.

Yeah, old people and sick people. Not healthy kids just keeling over dead at school because of a bit of sunshine.

They might as well go to school, even if I took all the shelves out of the fridge I don't think the smallest one would fit in, and anyway then my wine would get warm.

Are you teaching in a Prep School? I think you will find many parents, especially in state schools don't have an option whether or not send their children to school as they will have to work.

To be fair the vast majority of parents at private schools work too. They have to, to afford the fees.

Ahhhh, a generation survived the long, hot summer of '76.

I was there and remember it well. 😂

It was long and very dry, but it wasn't this hot. The highest temperature in 1976 was 35.9 degrees. The Met Office is expecting it to reach 38 degrees on Tuesday where we are.

GordanoServices · Yesterday 22:00

GCSEs and A levels have not finished yet.

WyrdHag · Yesterday 22:00

Kids will be fine so long as they're sensible

🤣🤣🤣🤣

There speaks a woman who has never worked in a secondary school medical room!

I think keeping kids off school because it's hot is, in theory, absolutely ridiculous.

OTOH I know exactly how my week is going to look in terms of headaches, 'I've forgotten my water bottle', and 'I feel sick/lightheaded/dizzy/faint/can't focus in class...' 🤦🏼‍♀️

Certainly not. I am saying that if school decides it isn't safe then I respect that and don't consider it akin to missing school for a holiday.

Understood. If the school closes it's doors, similar to snow days, then it would be considered an authorised absence and class isn't missed. So that makes sense.

But if it's "advised" to stay home... Then, learning would still be missed, as classes go ahead. This is a great opportunity for another last min holiday without the fine, with the blessing of the school.

(I'm being deliberately facetious, to prove a point that schools tend to be happy for students to miss school on their terms but not on the parents terms.)

It's not that much more and loads of people are giving feel like temperature which isn't quite accurate and they probably didn't cheat like that in the 70's. Giving feel like temps is inaccurate plus not the whole country is getting that feel like temp.

FlappyDappyDoo · Yesterday 22:01

We are keeping them off school and sending them 200 miles north with 7 gallons of fluid and 4 litres of suncream.

You can't be too careful

PrettyLittleRose · Yesterday 22:02

Ah, I remember the summer of 2018 well.......... Great footie, long hot summer days in the garden, no rain, the whole of the UK turned brown from the air, barbecues in the garden, pub garden parties, lovely summer school holiday, and lots of long hot summer days at the beach!

The summer of 2018 was also one of the hottest on record overall, tying with 1976, 1995, 2003, and 2006 for the UK's joint-hottest summer.

Just throwing some balance in, as people can't seem to stop banging on about the Summer of bloody 1976, like it was the only long hot Summer EVER! 😂

I remember it, but I acknowledge that it's wasn't the only long hot summer in the UK - ever!

(I await another 50 posts about it, as people bang on about it to take the piss out of me!) 😆

!

What a ridiculous question! Of course they should be in school! Houses are even hotter. Buy a bloody fan and put it in your classroom.

It's only set to be 30 degrees, for crying out loud. Do get a grip.

I don’t know where you are but it’s forecasting 37 on Tuesday for me.

I have children and also work in a school. I will be sending mine to school and I’m going to work. But equally, I wouldn’t be surprised if the schools do close. In 2022, kids were fainting all over the place at my school.

Also I’m not sure the comments about homes being the same temp, unless your house is fully glazed on one side, with no curtains or blinds and windows that don’t open more than a couple of inches above ground floor. It’s all well and good not opening windows at home but try that with 30 kids in one classroom.

And the only fans will be those brought in by staff. Not sure what one 12 inch desk fan is going to do.

im not saying schools should close but let’s not pretend this is going to fun. And also, not sure how often it reached 35 plus in the 90s. I’d be interested to see the figures actually as maybe I’m misremembering.

Children are actually more at risk of heat stroke than adults because they sweat proportionately less and have faster metabolisms.

Hippywannabe · Yesterday 22:05

I am actually on Activity week so we will be outside every day. Am a bit concerned but am sure all will be well. I think I will prefer it to being inside our classroom with only tiny windows to open a little bit.

Seagroves · Yesterday 22:05

Why wouldn’t you send your child in? It’s not a heatwave, it’s summer!!

how did we cope with warm weather in the 80’s and 90’s etc without social media telling us it gonna be lovely and warm….

It’s going to be 39 degrees on Tuesday where I am. A lot of schools are old buildings without proper heating let alone blinds and air conditioning!

basingstokebluesfortwos · Yesterday 22:05

Mine won’t be going in on tue/wed/thur. eldest is in secondary and they are allowed to remove their jumpers but blazers must be kept on with no exceptions. dd2 is in primary and they’ll have indoor play for those 3 days with very little learning so better for them to stay home with the air con

Met Office says 39 for my town on Tuesday with an amber weather warning. I actually am considering keeping DD home, as her school is oven on a normal summer day.

No way am I having 39 degrees is just 'standard summer'.

GCSEs and A levels have not finished yet.

They pretty much have for the vast (if not all) majority. Certainly in England, can’t comment on other parts of the UK. All the schools in my area have finished exams for y11 and 13.

Raindropskeepfallingon · Yesterday 22:07

MrsJeanLuc · Yesterday 21:49

The real question is, why would you think children shouldn't attend school? I mean why is school an inherently bad place to be when it's hot? They'd still be hot at home - why is that any different?

Be honest you're just looking for an excuse for a day off aren't you @wonderouswelly

Met office is forecasting 39c here on Tuesday.

I have portable air conditioning, ice, fans and no expectations of activity at home.

At school they have no air conditioning, ineffective fans and my child has a thirty minute uphill walk home at the peak of the forecast heat at 15:00. In the 40c heatwave a few years ago said child was sent home from school nauseous, dizzy, confused and had suspected heatstroke. It’s not really the same experience of being hot.

If it is still forecast 39c on Monday night I will not be sending my kids in on Tuesday. They will be “off sick”. They have a near perfect attendance record so school will just have to lump it. Comparisons to countries with appropriate infrastructure or where children are acclimatised to these temperatures are ridiculous - two weeks ago my kids were wearing winter coats to school!

Hippywannabe · Yesterday 22:08

I have been out and bought extra Factor 50 suncream and dug out a couple of spare water bottles for the children who inevitably will arrive without.

Settlersa · Yesterday 22:08

I think people remember 1976 because in those days we covered ourselves with oil, spread ourselves out and enjoyed it. Happy times

You’re keeping your child off for 32 degrees, getting up at sunrise (4:45am?!) and then going to do some revision? What a bloody day!

32 outside isnt nice, but inside the school and school bus will be much higher.

Sunrise isnt totally unusual for us, we live next to the beach.

Revision is neither here or there. If they are bored they can do it.

No big deal 🤷‍♀️

My kids school has 2000 kids, there is no way they have enough fans to keep people cool.

IlikebigboatsandIcannotlie · Yesterday 22:11

It depends. I would like to see them allow full non uniform. The "relaxed" uniform they are currently saying will be allowed still involves a heavy thick dark blue polo shirt
