Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

Honest if 39C was likely where I am, then yes I would. In formal uniforms in sweltering buildings … no chance.

As it happens it looks like we might get 21C so yes kids are going to school!

OP is a teacher, she is hoping to have less kids next week.

Fewer.

Interesting! I’ll have to let you know what my class attendance is this week haha. I’ll be bringing a fan in from
home but it will be blowing on me, not the kids 😂

I also have two children and both will be in. The prep schools one of my dc attend have cancelled their sports day on Monday. Ours is still going ahead.

The real question is, why would you think children shouldn't attend school? I mean why is school an inherently bad place to be when it's hot? They'd still be hot at home - why is that any different?

Be honest you're just looking for an excuse for a day off aren't you @wonderouswelly

Mine have exams so yes of course

followtheswallow · Yesterday 21:52

I don’t work Tuesdays and Wednesdays and I may consider letting him stay off to be honest.

He actually hasn’t missed a day of school yet but if he sleeps badly on the Tuesday especially I might let him stay home.

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 21:52

School is school and kids should attend unless there is a very good reason not to. Warm weather is a not a good enough reason.

Your children attend Prep School!

Both children in private, yes. Why?

To be fair, there probably aren't 25-30 people in op's living room!

Bluespottedfrog · Yesterday 21:53

Not because of the heat but they may be tired on Weds after the England match.

Yep. Classic Mumsnet total hysteria.

YEP! And the ones complaining about how soooooooooo hot it is at 26-30C, will be the same ones saying 'had anyone got their heating on yet?' when it drops below 17C! 😂

Ahhhh, a generation survived the long, hot summer of '76.

I remember it well. Lying on the school field in the sun, with my bestie Gary, reading the NME and Melody Maker. Being told off by the Headmistress for ‘cavorting’ on the field with that awful 6th form boy.

Thehop · Yesterday 21:54

Well may have to close nursery if it reaches 30. Our building is stifling and it's impossible to keep very young children still calm and cool. Much safer for them to be at home when it gets to 30

ChefsKisser · Yesterday 21:54

Rituelec · Yesterday 21:15

Ours is still saying 32 and I will be keeping them off. The school bus will be atrocious and to be honest what are they going to learn in a hot and sweaty classroom? We will go out for sunrise, grab a breakfast, come home and read or do some other revision.

You’re keeping your child off for 32 degrees, getting up at sunrise (4:45am?!) and then going to do some revision? What a bloody day!

I am unsure where you got your idea from here?

I have never stated that I think children shouldn’t be coming to school!

I hear it from children in my class or parent chat in the mornings/afternoons!

I don't imagine the OP's living room is the same size as a school classroom! 😂

ClearFruit · Yesterday 21:55

Two of mine are still at school, and they have both been lobbying for a few days off. Absolutely not.

Dd's classroom is almost the same size as my not that big living room. Not all schools are new and airy.

SleeplessInWherever · Yesterday 21:56

Mine will absolutely be going. Shorts, hat, suncream, plenty of fluids - have a good day.

He can have the paddling pool when he gets home, but I don’t think “summer” is a good enough reason to stay home.

Should the country just take a few days off paid?

yonem · Yesterday 21:57

I have to say I have never understood why people bang on about the Summer of 1976! Yes, it was a long hot summer, but we have had a number of long hot summers since. Including last year (2025) and 2018. There have been quite a few more. The obsession with talking about Summer of 1976 is bizarre. Confused

I agree. People are being ostriches about climate change. And as for ‘we survived 1976’ - well, not everyone did. Hundreds of people died as a result of the heat.

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 21:57

Parents should not be encouraging their children to play truant.

How do they think kids in hot countries like Spain or Italy cope?

In Africa the kids will run to school in temperatures hotter than this.

And yet parents of today's snowflakes worry about them getting too hot on the bus.

It is pathetic if you ask me.

Cheers. Thank god I'm not a teacher.

Are you teaching in a Prep School? I think you will find many parents, especially in state schools don't have an option whether or not send their children to school as they will have to work.

NoArmaniNoPunani · Yesterday 21:57

Yeah. I'm pissed off that sports day has been cancelled because of the heat.

So this was somewhere with a hot climate, temperatures routinely over 40 degrees - not like the UK then. Different buildings, different clothes, different tolerances.

They just wore school summer dresses, same as here. Building a bit naturally cooler (in the older part) but not wildly. Tolerance, yes, if you spend more time in those temperatures you acclimatise but I think a lot of that is change in behaviour - staying inside in the day, slowing down a bit where you can, staying up late- basically not mad dogs and Englishmen in the noonday sun. My children have a complexion more suitable to the Highlands of Scotland. They survived. The holidays are worse. The days are very long when it's too hot to even go in a pool.

(Not all hot countries have the infrastructure of the gulf or southern Europe before anyone starts talking about Dubai).

Anyway, I'm sure schools will keep it chill this week.
