Are you sending your children to school Tuesday and Wednesday?

I am a teacher and have heard lots of parents won’t be sending their children in during the heat wave next week.

Are you keeping yours off?

I am dreading it as a teacher; our classroom is so stuffy!

If mine were still of school age they would definitely be going in. I see no reason not to.

A large flask of water and they'd be grand.

I kept one of mine off a few years ago when it was 39. He was 5 at the time and I didn't want to walk to and from the school in the hottest part of the day so I kept him at home and we hung out in the paddling pool all day.

I'm relaxed about making decisions for my children/ me though and didn't consider it a huge deal.

Ours is still saying 32 and I will be keeping them off. The school bus will be atrocious and to be honest what are they going to learn in a hot and sweaty classroom? We will go out for sunrise, grab a breakfast, come home and read or do some other revision.

Of course it’s a heatwave!

Temperatures in much of Europe are expected to be above 40C! It’s 39C in London and we do not have the infrastructure to cope well with those temperatures.

Right….. so it will be warm.

assume you think the country should just shut down then? No one at school or work etc.. all nurses and doctors stay at home? Police, ambulance, fire brigade etc just down tools cause it’s gonna be warm??

no, of course not. So why shouldn’t kids go to school??

AbsoluteHoot · Yesterday 21:16

I’m amazed at all the complete hysterical flapping on MN about a few days of hot weather. I’m pleased to say it doesn’t represent real life. No-one is going to actually melt ffs.

Rituelec · Yesterday 21:16

People saying its silly? There's no way it was ever 34-36 when I was at school. Fans don't help. They push it all around hot air. Glass windows in schools. No shade. Hot school buses. No air con. Some kids will be more intolerant too.

shuggles · Yesterday 21:16

@scalt We have to stop being so precious about things like this. and remember, don’t moan about the heat; do so kills the sun fairies.

Why should I not moan about the heat? Heat waves are disgusting. When it's warm, people are sweating constantly and stink. That's disgusting and unhygienic. Why do you want that?

childoftkty · Yesterday 21:16

Of course mine will be in school just as I will be in work. What a bizarre question

We are set to break the heat wave of 76 record this week in the Midlands its not "just summer" my son has a hour long taxi ride each way im concerned about the return home as any parent would be

The taxi might have aircon?

wonderouswelly · Yesterday 21:18

Interesting! I’ll have to let you know what my class attendance is this week haha. I’ll be bringing a fan in from
home but it will be blowing on me, not the kids 😂

I also have two children and both will be in. The prep schools one of my dc attend have cancelled their sports day on Monday. Ours is still going ahead.

Yes, I’ll be at work.

I think cars with air con may well be the best place to be!

The school bus does not have air con. Its 50mins each way.

beigetriangle · Yesterday 21:19

of course
school has airconditioning and will be much more pleasant than at home.
for breaks dc are allowed to use water pistols outdoors

CityonFire · Yesterday 21:19

It’s only going to be 22 degrees here so yes. Although I’m glad I’ll be at home in front of a fan all day myself tbh.

Dollymylove · Yesterday 21:19

Just open the windows?

Beer3000 · Yesterday 21:19

When I read this, I though "what heat wave?" and had to Google the weather in London. I was wearing a fleece today, and it's forecast to be 19 here on Wednesday.

I just can't imagine a temperature of 39 degrees. Surely no one will be capable of doing anything except complaining for the entire week?

I think this is one of the problems, especially in some of the smaller classrooms with 25-30 children in and safety windows that open about an inch. I will wait and see how things go, I do trust the school to let us know if they feel they can safely be open or not so will follow their lead.

It will be a similar temperature when we go on holiday this year, so I'm hoping dc will be fine. I used to live in a very hot country and, yes the classrooms were airier, but we didn't have air con back then. We did have to start at 7 and finish at 12. Maybe some schools will do half days only.

Hopefully the car will have AC so should be cooler than being in school or at home?

Just open the windows?

That just lets the heat in and makes the place hotter.

ThaneOfGlamis · Yesterday 21:21

Eldest has air conditioning in classroom. I would pay money to be able to attend too on hot days!

The emergency services will be working overtime because people in this country don’t respect the heat. I grew up partly in Germany and remember my school closing due to extreme heat, and Germany is much better at dealing with heat than the U.K. in terms of building design etc.

They don’t melt, a lot more people die.

Reducing travel keeps air quality in a better state for people with breathing difficulties to actually breathe.

Thank heaven some people actually care about others ..that’s not hysterical that being a decent human

QuaintBeaker · Yesterday 21:22

Must admit it hadn't crossed my mind not to send my son in.
But he does really struggle with the heat (he's autistic) and the school he attends is very old and has no blinds or air con.

I'll see how he goes Monday and Tuesday though. Weds and Thurs are forecast to be the hottest where I am in Sussex

Horses7 · Yesterday 21:22

🤣 heard it all now!!

Anyahyacinth · Yesterday 21:23

Lots of cities now have a cool places guide ..if anyone is really suffering..welcoming air conditioned spaces to protect health
