Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

I agree it's makes all the difference if the temps drop over night ! We flush the house with the cooler air over night and then do the windows closed and now we have our winter thermal curtains up outside which helps. We previously had sheets ,anything that stops the glass getting hit by sun outside...is a winner but these thermals are really helping !
However we are plunged into darkness all day !

@GloriaSmud apologies if you have already said but what are weather patterns looking like for the end of July !

Tiny bit cooler today at this time - it’s clouded over. Hope that makes a bit of difference to how hot the house gets in the day too if we keep a bit of cloud cover. Agree humidity is high though!

Yesterday was so hot in Northumberland, but definitely cooler today, with a very pleasant breeze currently

@PaperTyger ~ the GFS only goes as far as the 26th July at the moment but from next Friday (the 17th) onwards and possibly starting off with thunderstorms, it's looking unsettled and temperatures return to being more like a normal summer for the UK.

The metoffice long-range forecast from 24th July seems to indicate that the unsettled theme will continue after that, so although it might be warm/hot at times, it'll be mixed in with cooler days and rain, which will be a relief for quite a lot of us!

Friday,24th July-Friday, 7th August
The signal through the end of July and into August becomes increasingly mixed with spells of low pressure and more unsettled weather becoming more likely. There may still be some thunderstorms at times as well. There will still probably be some dry interludes, most probably in the south and southeast. Temperatures are likely to remain warm or very warm and some spells of hot weather remain possible.

@GloriaSmud a weird question and probably only I can answer it!

Realistically, next week isn't going to feel better is it? With temperatures of 32. I realise it won't be quite the horror show that this week has been but in terms of the way my flat traps heat, it's effectively just going to get hotter and hotter in here isn't it?

The nighttime temperatures look to be about 18 or 20 so that's not going to help

@EmeraldRoulette ~ from what you've said about your flat and the way it holds on to heat, I suppose it might get hotter but I'd say it's more likely (as you've said), that next week the difference between day and nighttime temperatures won't change that much. And once things turn unsettled (hopefully after next Friday), it might take a few days for the heat to dissipate as well (and I've found that with our 30 year old house as well, especially when the temperatures are in the upper 30sC/close to 40C)

I was horrified by the May heat wave because it means that the place just gets no chance to cool down till October or something. The nearest hotel has got wise to all of this and I'm sure they've put their prices up - to be honest I didn't really know how much they were charging before, but I'm pretty sure what it is now - I think they will genuinely have people booking rooms just for air conditioning!

We were at Vallum last night, just on our way back from Hexham, very pleasant paddle on the Tyne. Just back into Whitley now, 26°C

@gingercat02 I quite fancy visiting Hexham - now it makes me think of Lady Edith!

it’s quite bizarre really!

Although we hovered around the same temperature yesterday (33C) as on Thursday, yesterday didn't seems as bad which we're putting down to a fairly good breeze which lasted most of the day and it seemed to take the edge off the temperatures.

So at the moment the next few days/into next week is looking 'cooler' (as in more upper 20sC/occasional 30C rather than mid 30sC) for a few days, another blast of heat around Wednesday and then possibly (hopefully!) a thundery breakdown towards the end of next week.

And Netweather's thoughts from yesterday seem to be along the same lines...

Very brisk breeze here, so although it's hot, it doesn't feel as hot, if you see what I mean. I'm so looking forward to thundery breakdowns!

I survived my trip to the hairdresser in my un- air conditioned car yesterday - had a delightful hour and a half in the air conditioning, drinking tea and reading magazines!

Thunder ne Newcastle area

There is a breeze here in North Shropshire but as it's so hot it's not remotely refreshing. We headed to our local air-conditioned Costa and it was blissfully cool. Even stubborn DH has conceded we will have to look at air-con in the future, or our house will be uninhabitable.

Its raining in Newcastle, proper umbrella levels of rain!

Have woken up to cloud and coolness! Tis lovely. There was a cool wind overnight so it was easier to sleep. And my weather app is saying the wind is from the north north east, gusting up to 30 mph 🌬️ Feels like temperature 'only' getting up to 24° today.
