Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

Basically for the next 10 days (in a line from Hull to North Wales southwards), it's temperatures in the high 20s/low 30s (occasionally hitting mid 30s in the south/SE.) Northern England and Scotland are looking at temperatures in the low to mid 20s.

There are heat health alerts for most areas of the country, for the next few days.

Thanks Gloria - hopefully it’s the next two days that are the worst for the SE then a slight cool down - even a couple of degrees makes a difference! I seem fine with high 20s but once we get in to the 30s it’s more of a struggle all round.

@GloriaSmud thank you - I do plan to visit there at some point but it is a hassle without a car IMHO. Wells-next-the-Sea is on my list and has been for ages - I'll look at it properly later. That's a dramatic cool down though for them - not sure it will happen!

@Delatron I don't know why they keep using the term, it's just a boiling summer. Looks on track to be worse than 2018!

Right just watched the latest forecast - looks like over the weekend the wind swings round to coming from the East and it will be a bit more breezy- still high 20s maybe low 30s for the South but I’m guessing better news for those further East. Fingers crossed.

Just updating here as I mentioned about trying to find somewhere to work

A client very kindly offered me a space in an air-conditioned office and it was reachable by bus - it was a bit strange because it's not actually their office but it's one that they were hiring for something else.

It was amazing! The bus seats were incredibly hot and you can see people are really struggling just going about their day-to-day business.

There was a guy there from South Africa and he was saying to me that he can't focus, he can't think about anything except when the temperature is going to go down and he's also really worried about the rest of the summer.

I don't really know anyone in there, but all talk I heard was of the weather.

I'm about to go and sit in the garden, but that's a bit like sitting in a hairdryer tonight.

@Delatron @justasking111 it's only for today and tomorrow. Still a huge piece of luck. It was really something to get to the end of the working day and feel normal.

My client is hiring the space for something else - next week it will be back to not having anywhere to go, at least not anywhere that has air-conditioning

It's 26° outside now so no point opening the window. I'm not sure how much work I'll actually get done tomorrow. Going to be a horrible night.

There's something else that got mentioned today, people were saying that they felt like it's not being discussed on the news or whatever. I don't really see the news as such. So I don't know if it's that they felt they overdid the warnings last time - like I kept getting emails from the train company saying not to travel on my booked day and it actually ran fine

It was a relief to find people who are struggling with the heat as much as I am. I don't know if everyone's just "don't complain" mode.

Had some sleep, flat cooled to 20 overnight but at 6:30am it is 22 degrees and rising.
Going to try going into town whist it is not too hot. May then get a bus to another town where I know part of the shopping centre is underground - maybe that will be cooler. But will be hot on the busses I expect.

Good news about finding an office EmeraldRoulette, even if it's just for a few days. I think you're right about the 'don't complain' mode ~ it's a case of 'there's nothing we can do about it, adjust daily life around the heat (and do things in the cooler parts of the day) and get on with it.'

It's been quite an uncomfortable night here in the Midlands ~ bin men have already been so they're getting collections done before the heat builds ~ we're forecast 33C today.

The worst days for all this looks like today and tomorrow and then slightly lower (as in upper 20s!) temperatures over the weekend and next week, along with a chance of thundery showers especially in the south.

we've got 32 at the weekend and then 30 every day next week. It's truly horrendous. I haven't heard anything about thundery showers but fingers crossed.

I’ve read that the overnight temperatures next week will be so much better. It’s tough and a bit relentless but I think that will make a difference.

It's looking that way, Delatron ~ some nights next week could get down to single figures in the North and hover around the 17/18C mark in the south/SE

Yay @GloriaSmud .Some good news 🙌. I do think if it takes a while to get up to the max temperatures you can do more in the day without having to retreat indoors. It was starting to get too hot at 8am this morning.

@Delatron ~ I think that was the problem with the last heatwave, temperatures weren't dropping at night so the next morning, they were already at a high temperature and then climbed higher during the day.

When it comes to thunderstorms, the metoffice in their long range forecast think this from next week onwards...

Tuesday, 14th-Thursday, 23rd July
High pressure initially situated to the north of the UK with low pressure over the Bay of Biscay starts the period with broadly settled weather for much of the UK. There will, however, be a risk of thunderstorms spreading into the south of the UK from France at times. Through the weekend potentially turning more unsettled with some rain or showers and thunderstorms at times as low pressure and a more northerly wind affect the UK at times. Temperatures will be warm or very warm for most, perhaps hot at times in the southwest initially, likely easing to warm or near average into the weekend, though further hot spells possible between systems.

So hopefully a little relief even if it's still looking warm at times....

It's coming to something when I look forward to a weekend of 28 and when I look forward to my holiday in The Canaries to cool off.

I have really had enough of this now - I am grumpy, tired and constantly hot. The grass looks like 1976 . The weeds and overgrown bushes still grow, bastards.

Started so hot this morning by this afternoon had cooled down noticeably. Still sunny. I suspect the wind may have changed direction.

This morning drove from Llandudno to abergele, it went misty and cool a sea fret. Driving back the mist had moved westwards but didn't reach all the way only a couple of miles further to Colwyn Bay.

DIL bought an air con unit from Screwfix for £175. It works on one large room. She said it has kept her sane

When I say my indoor temperature that's with it on! It's very old so I really hope it survives summer. I will replace it in winter but the neighbours have said to me that their newer units aren't coping with the temperatures in this new build either. We're all reaching a point where we actually have to switch it off because it can't cope and I think everyone's worried about over loading the unit.

I think Americans call these swamp coolers. It's good, but it's not a replacement for proper air-conditioning. The posters who say that their unit is dropping the temp by several degrees, I always ask them what they've got. So I've got a list of things to look up when they are cheaper in winter - and also when they're available! They probably won't get cheaper this winter because everyone wants to buy them.

was out in the garden and could literally feel the humidity climbing. I looked it up and it is apparently going to climb through the night. And then drop down in the day. I think this is the theory of why tomorrow should feel better. It remains to be seen whether or not that works in reality.

I have a little portable aircon unit, it's a two hose one (apparently they're more efficient?). It isn't super powerful - I live in a small house with smallish rooms, and yesterday night it got my bedroom temperature down from 26.6° to 23° - I think it's struggling!

I've just been out in the garden dead heading and it feels quite cool currently. My cat is lying in the middle of the lawn, loving it! I have to go out today 😬 in my un-airconditioned car. I'm leaving just before 9 am, so it won't be too bad, and then I'll be in the AC at my hairdressers. Coming home will feel warmer 😬🥵

It was still 25C at 11pm here (Leicester) last night and the metoffice is forecasting 33C for us again today. Some thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook ~ there should be cooler conditions for some tomorrow as the wind direction changes....

In Manchester, it’s 33 max here today and wind direction is a moot point as there’s barely any air movement. Looking hot for the foreseeable. At least it’s less humid than last heatwave so I’m just hot and not a sweaty mess.

I think the humidity is still high in the south mids. I am feeling this more than last time but I suspect it is just because the buildings have 4 weeks of heat in them.

We have an old aircon too and then three newer portable ones. They are so much worse than the old one. It is 20 years old and will definitely die at some point. One of the new ones is a bit better. It has its vents on the top which does seem to help a bit.
